Sunday night's concert put me spinnning, Monday night's concert put my into a vortex of excitment but sending my into warp drive was meeting Bowie after the show. He obviously did not stay long after the show because I met up with his bus at the border going into Windsor. I think I can now die and let my soul hang in limbo because I will always be happy.

So, R. Monster, you want details? You got 'em. Earlier in the day,
I was lucky enough to find the "Golden Years" cd on RCA used for $9.
Then, it seemed as if every radio station on the way to Detroit was
playing Bowie in some fashion. (Sorry, no "Fashion," however.) While
I was walking to the State, a passerby cheerfully yelled "David Bowie's
a faggot!" I was thankful to find Diana'a death hasn't united quite
everyone in an altruism of the spirit. Anyway, I got in right quick
(no line!!) and staked a place out on the floor, as close to the stage
as I could without crushing the folks around me. As a quick aside, I'd
like to tell the TW follower from Bowling Green who stood behind the
tall white guy in the red shirt early on to show some respect to the
other people in the theater. Yes, you, the guy who's driving to
Philly, the guy who shamelessly hit on some young woman standing next
to me. As soon as Bowie hit the stage, I was hit by this asshole who
just had to rush the stage and knock the shit out of the people around
him. Guys like you are part of the problem of live shows. D'you think
Bowie will remember you because he saw you for a split second, or
possibly grazed your hand? Pop your inflated ego and come back to the
flock, earthling. To the rest of you, sorry about that. Thankfully,
however, the floor was relatively asshole-free compared to Sunday
night. Bowie looked just as commanding as ever, a subtle earring of
feather perched on his left lobe and a smile for everyone as he
ran through "Quicksand." Then the real fun began. He informed the
crowd that he started early tonight because he wanted to play a few
more songs than he did the previous night, that there would be some
surprises. He was true to his word. He pulled out "Always Crashing..."
and "Queen Bitch," dusted them off, and presented them to 1997 none
the worse for wear. Then it was time for "The Supermen," but a version
that combined the musical progression with the album version with the
vocal arrangement of the "Hunky Dory" b-side. Bowie looked a bit
detached during the verses, but he burned up the choruses with his
ageless vibrato, holding the audience rapt. The biggest highlight, for
me at least, was his new take on "My Death," a Brel track covered most
effectively by Scott Walker back in the day. However, Bowie's new
arrangement gave it a delicate menace that framed his vocal perfectly.
And WHAT A VOCAL!! Easily the best vocal I've seen him give. Balancing
between choked anguish and wistful desire, his melancholy tale was too
good for the room. Damn. After that, he came back down to earth, hitting
his set from the night before with enthusiasm. His between-song banter
was copious on this night, as he talked about anything from pissed-off
audience members to Uncle Ray Davies being Chinese. Hell, he even got
a rim shot from Zack on his semi-dis of Lou Reed! Of the new songs he
inserted, I didn't need to hear a carbon copy of "The Man Who Sold..."
that could have come right off the cd single, it was so similar. "The
Voyeur..." was inspired; I always did like the Crimson-esque vibe of
that tune. As for the encore, I thought the Moby version of "Dead Man
Walking" was kinda flat, but the inclusion of "The Last Thing..." more
than made up for it. The retooled "V2" was cool, and "Strangers When
We Meet" (one of the Great Lost Bowie Singles, I think) reminded me once
again how much I like "Outside" and how much I hope he continues in that
musical vein. I don't know why, but I liked Gail much better this time
around; "O Superman" was dead-on (I did like Bowie's ad-lib use of a "no
smoking" sign at the right point in the song) and the one-two punch of
"All The Young Dudes" and "Moonage Daydream" pleased everybody in the
house. All in all, two very cool nights, both special in their own ways.
I was bummed I didn't get to see him (only WHYT radio folks and chicks
with big tits were allowed backstage), but "My Death" made all my time
worthwhile. I had a blast. Whatever you do, do not miss this tour.
No Bowie fan should go without. Thank you again, Evan, for such a
forum so's hacks like me can share thoughts with those of similar minds.
BTW, go see "The Full Monty" (featuring Robert Carlisle from "Trainspotting").
I saw it before the second show and for some reason, it was the icing
on the biggest damn cake I ever ate. Until next time, folks...

Oh Boy, by the time I got to the tee-shirt area, all the posters were
sold out. Poor Soul. I wonder if through the magic of the internet
posters can still be obtained. Hope so. (need about 4, for me and
friends) Wonder if they will be sold at upcoming DC show?
Thanks, JohnO

It sure was a pleasure seeing David perform so many songs last night
at the State Theater in Detroit. The last show I saw, before last
night's was Washington DC 7Sept96, and the MSG Birthday Bash. Gail,
Mike, Reeves, and Zack were wonderful too. I noticed how big and
beautiful Gails eyes really are. Zack sure expended lots of energy on
the drums. Mike looked so intense, at times. Reeves didn't break any
strings that I noticed, but enjoyed the night as well. David was warm
and friendly to the croud. He spoke about his boots, which came from
Tibet, several times before going barefoot. Gail was also barefoot.
Really kind of sensuous. Since we're chatting about footware, let me
add, Reeves wore big black boots that looked like they could be used
for skiing. David wore a simple white outfit all night long. I
couldn't help but wish for David to do a couple changes of wardrobe.
Oh well, so I'm spoiled. My personal high-light came during "All The
Young Dudes". After going to his concerts for over 20, (dare I say)
years, guess who's hand he "shook" during "A.T.Y.D." Yep, oh, ah, WOW!
Really made me so happy. I do wish he had done something in Andy Warhol's
"voice", like, "Gee, that was grrreat!" I was glad that Voyeur was
put back in, and I'm nuts about the "new" V2. One sad note about
the floor, if I may. If people want to be up close for a show, go
early and wait in line. General Admission is great, but the pushing
near the encore detracted terribly from a great show. Wish fans could
live by a golden rule, or something. Anyway, David, if you read this,
thank you from the bottom of my heart for the years of imagery you've
shared with us. Love you ('till Tuesday)...JohnO

This was an AMAZING concert!!! This was the first Bowie show that I have ever been to and hopefully not my last. He was very friendly and joked allot. I really loved Always Crashing In The Same Car, that was one that I was really looking forward to. Thank You David for making this one of the best nights I have had in a long time, this experience could NOT have been better!

Thank you David , Thank you Gail, Thank you Reeves. My God, 30 songs,
two hours and forty minutes. Strangers When We Meet is an all time
favorite.
My Death. Always Crashing in the Same Car, Moonage Daydream, and
Dead Man Walking were all absent last night. I was in some sort
of rapture. Some woman whose hand I grabbed to dance ripped my
shirt off my body. Tatters, all gone, how erotic!.
I hope David and the band could see us in the mezzanine in our passion,
because the people on the main floor looked like they were entranced.

WOW! Tonight was even more incredible than last night! I never thought I'd get to hear "My Death" (a personal favorite) and get to yell out "ME!" at the end! And it was so cool that they all had to have music stands to play it. Also, "The Supermen" was great! Bowie seemed to be having a great time tonight...I thought it was hilarious when he did the "Fashion" intro...but they started into "Battle for Britain"! Once more, WOW!

Can't wait for tonight! Hope everyone has a blast...last night was incredible! LOVED Panic In Detroit and Look Back in Anger! Keep an eye open for a deep-red headed girl with short hair on her left and long hair on her right (and a MSG 50th b-day t-shirt). I hope to be front row tonight!

To all those who will be at the State Theater on Sept.22nd, I think we should all shout out for "Panic in Detroit". I also hope that the audience is into the new stuff, because the audience helps separate the concert from good in to great.
