GISBORNE 2000 FESTIVAL

CONFIRMED PERFORMERS PROFILES

David Bowie:

David Bowie, musician, performer and songwriter is one of the greatest entertainment legends of our time. From his humble folkie beginnings, to the glitter and glam of Ziggy Stardust and the elegance of the Thin White Duke, he is continually reinventing himself in ways that defy ‘Rock & Roll’ logic.

With 36 albums and almost 20 films to his credit, to say David Bowie has been prolific would be an understatement. He was recently voted by his peers as the most influential rock performer of the last 30 years! From receiving rave reviews for his Broadway performance in The Elephant Man in 1980, to recently creating BowieNet, (www.davidbowie.com) his personal ‘boutique’ ISP site on the internet, David’s innovation has always been inspiring.

As the century draws to a close, it will be David Bowie - Megastar who draws us through to the new millennium. For someone who has been described as the world’s first truly post-modernist star, who could be more appropriate.

Split Enz:

A truly original kiwi icon, heralded in our nations museum Te Papa, and exhibited as an art form, Split Enz were New Zealand’s first true international success with hits like I see Red, Shark Attack, My Mistake and I Hope I Never. Formed in 1973 by Tim Finn and Noel Crombie while at Auckland University, the band went from strength to strength, touring the world and producing many hits, before concluding in 1984.

The band being formed for the Gisborne 2000 Festival, will include Tim Finn, Neil Finn, Noel Crombie, Eddie Raynor and Nigel Grigg. Tim and Neil Finn are well known to all New Zealanders, both having experienced great international success. Eddie Rayner is now working as a recording arranger in Auckland and was responsible for the creation of ENZSO, for which Split Enz teamed up with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Released in April ’97, the ENZSO recording was widely acclaimed and toured both New Zealand and Australia. Noel Crombie, responsible for the wild and outlandish outfits that the band wore, is not surprisingly a creative designer, currently residing in Melbourne.

Split Enz last played together for their 20th Anniversary Tour in 1993 which was a sellout around New Zealand. Great efforts have been made to get the band together for this very special and significant event.
