I just got back from the premiere of Julian Schnabel's beautiful film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Schnabel introduced the film, which was nice. He read a poem that his father wrote before he died. The film was extrodinary, really. The person I went with wasn't crazy about it. The story didn't excite her. She said the conflict didn't rise, the stakes didn't get higher as the film progressed. I do realize that's one of those screenwriting 101 rules that stories should do those things, but I loved the film, and didn't mind it at all. I wonder, then, for myself, do I need rising conflict all the time?
