In reply to:

I did see Underworld on Tuesday night

The Boiler Room was about half full when Kraftwerk were on, but filled-up towards the end with people who were obviously coming in to see Underworld. Unfortunately, by that time, us old people were completely shagged-out after standing about in the hot sun for 9 hours, so we left (could have gone to see the Foo Fighters…but didn’t).

In reply to:

I still can't decide whether I would have seen Janes Addiction or Kraftwerk

It was a tough decision, but I’d seen JA before, but never seen Kraftwerk.

How are you doing with the fires, Soulie? Seen a lot of Thredbo on the news lately, and it’s still standing, but the sight of a shopkeeper throwing away hundreds of Magnums, because the electricity had cut out and stopped his freezer from working, was heartbreaking.

Re: What Bands Have You Seen Lately? new [re: SoulLoveChild]

I spent most of the last weekend watching bands. Here is what I saw:

The Quarrelmen (Prince Patrick Hotel, January 25)
An astoundingly good Beatles covers band. They play the most obscure songs such as the opener "Old Brown Shoe" suggesting it’s music for diehard fans.

Wilco (The Palace, January 26)
This was their first ever Melbourne show. In recognition, they played songs from the full breadth of their career (including Uncle Tupelo) for just on 2.5 hours. A fabulous gig observed from the front row.

The Music (Big Day Out, January 27)
About 2 PM, I tackled the crush of the Big Day Out for this Scottish band. Pretty good (although I didn't know any of the actual music).

Machine Gun Fellatio (Big Day Out, January 27)
I caught a glimpse of the stage for about one second. This gig was packed.

Wilco (Big Day Out, January 27)
Wilco were oddly placed at the Big Day Out. The previous night, Jeff Tweedy mentioned they had been placed between heavy metal bands and the audience usually stand in front of the stage giving them the finger. But as far as I could tell, the audience were appreciative of this gig. (The ones that turned up).

PJ Harvey (Big Day Out, January 27)
Observed from the video screen (I couldn’t get near this, unfortunaely).

Kraftwerk (Big Day Out, January 27)
Four men walk robotically to the stage. They stand in front of their keyboards and laptops and start pushing buttons. The audience goes wild. What follows is a retrospective of their career with relevant images displayed on a vast video screen. Incredible.

Underworld (Big Day Out, January 27)
A long set for a festival (a full 1.5 hours). The most astonishing lasers I have seen and one of the most ecstatic audiences. I did know one song (Boy - very impressive as far as techno goes). Air content:
50% hydrogen/oxygen/carbon dioxide
50% pot smoke

Over the summer, I saw Natalie Merchant, Dar Williams, and Tool, all three being some of the most amazing concerts I have been to. I also attended the October 20th Bowie show at the Beacon theater, and to date, it's been the last concert I've seen.

However, I have tickets to see Tori Amos March 6th and either Zwan or Tori Amos again, depending on which our school decides to bring on campus for our Spring Festival.

Scottish? I didn't know they'd moved Leeds from West Yorkshire to north of the border. When did this happen? Has anyone told Michael Parkinson and Sir Geoffrey Boycott that they're now jocks? :)

Re: What Bands Have You Seen Lately? new [re: 96dbFreak]

Last four concerts:
Bowie on the 24th and the 25th of September, at the Zénith, Paris. And the next day I had two tickets for the Kraftwerk shows: they did TWO shows on the same day, one starting at 20:00, the other at 23:59. As I was REALLY tired, I sold my ticket to the last Krafwerk show, as the only thing I wanted to do was sleep, and I figured the show would be exactly the same as the 20:00 show. And it was.
I still shoud have gone, though; unbeknownst to me, some friends of mine, who live round the corner in Amsterdam, were also there. And I went to my first Kraftwerk concert in 1993, it's still one of the best concerts I ever saw.
Paris was amazing though, the Hall of the Cité de la Musique is a really small intimate venue, with wonderful acoustics.
And I had a good reason to wear my "Autobahn" cyclist-type tour shirt again. Its so cool.

Adam, I think the song you are referring to is Born Slippy/NUXX which was featured on both the Trainspotting soundtracks and was a reasonably large hit at the time (let your feelings slip boy, but never your mask boy / shouting lager larger larger.....) Yes, the lighting was incredible (especially for that song and also Moaner, the closing track) and yes again, the audience were wonderful on Tuesday - I even commented about that on the night. That song sent the entire venue into orbit, it was a thrilling moment when it kicked in!

Stu, I'll write about home when I get there - I know the power has been off since last SUnday and SLH is struggling to keep the generator going just to keep the chest freezer from going off. They had to get a garbage truck up just to get all the rotting food out of town cos the power has been off for so long. And here's me having a ball in Melbourne..... I feel so guilty (but damn glad I went!)

Bowie in Australia?
feels like something's gonna happen this year

Re: What Bands Have You Seen Lately? [re: johnnysitar]

this past monday night i saw bonnie prince billy (will oldham) and his back-up band play. it kinda sucked. i'm just a casual fan, but even die-hard fans complained that the band sounded like it was the first time they were playing together.

your funeral...my trial
