I blame whoever created the metric system for failing to calibrate the measurements more closely to parts of the human body (i.e. an inch is more or less the length of a knuckle, a foot is, well, a foot). The length of a meter seems so arbitrary, harder to estimate than measurements based on built-in (if imprecise) measuring devices.
