Now we only need a miraculous return from Emilio in order to enjoy the Brazilian-baiting that marked the last tournament.

The Rest new [re: NoGame]

In reply to:

My hopes are for Spain. An attractive team which traditionally fucks themselves up.

And yes, they did it again, Spain out against France. Spain, Argentina and Germany were the only three teams left in the tournament who delivered some sort of spectacular football, and now the Spanish are gone and one of the other two will as well when the two clash on Friday. Neither of the other teams left in the tournament has impressed or delivered any joy for the football fan who watches with less national interest rather than interest in the sport itself. So is there a team beyond Germany and Argentina that can bring more excitement to the game?

What are your predictions for the quality and the outcome of the quaterfinal? Here are the matches:

Argentina - Germany
I expect this to be a very good match. Germany will again try to push forward and bring the ball to Klose and Podolski, who again could be the key figuers as Argentina's defense is certainly the weak spot. Heinze is way beyond form and may well be a target for Germany's attacks. On the other hand Argentina are exactly the team that knows how to keep a game tight in midfield and suddenly explode into forward movement. And with dangerous strikers even on the bench they will certainly be a constant threat to the slowness of Friedrich and Metzelder in Germany's back four. Should be a busy day for both goalkeepers so I expect a fairly memorable score line: 3:2 Argentina.

Italy - Ukraine
Not very promising. I spare the details and say: 1:0 Italy in a deadly slow game.

England - Portugal
This will be a game to watch and enjoy. Though both teams will not reach the amazing quality of their encounter at Euro 2004 we are still bound to see a tough battle. If the Deco-less Portuguese can manage to inject the necessary speed into the game they will win this thing. If not, England will get their chances as I expect them to make up for the lack of quality with a mighty fighting spirit that may finally lead to more danger in the opposition's half than in recent games. Both teams can play better than they have so far and I expect them both to do so, thus I predict: Extratime, and then, well, Portugal, winning 2:1.

Brazil - France
Two enigmas clashing: What is the reason for Brazil's joyless perfomances so far, is it all tactics? Are France better than expected and are they on an up after beating Spain? I have no idea.Of course Brazil are the favourites but after France's intelligent and cool tactical win over Spain Brazil will definitely have to show more of their real class - and I expect them to do so. Prediction: A decent game that Brazil will win 2:0.

And I want to believe that a light's shining through somehow

All European sides for the semis new [re: EJ]

I was very much supporting Spain, as one of the outsiders, but helas, my words rang true. So let's talk about the games that we have left.

Argentina - Germany
I think Argentina can be beaten by the Germans if they play in that agressive like manner they opened against Sweden. After that it's all up to the defenders to hold back the Argentinian storm. Germany is the home team and certainly have that advantage, but the quality of the Latin footballers is enormous. I think Germany might take a 2-0 lead in the first half, Argentina fights itself back into the game on sheer quality, making it 2-2. Then it will be extra time, all leading up to a exciting penalty shoot out. Then, with the home team advantage, Germany will win.

Italy - Ukraine
Based on what has been shown so far, with Ukraine getting more comfortable with being where they are, and Italy getting more and more nervous about what's going on at home, I think we may be surprised. Italy will go out, with 1-0, and guess who makes the goal, as a farewell gift to his 'second homecountry'...

England - Portugal
As I predicted against Holland, so I will do again against England. Portugal will make it because of Scolari, who knows how to make a winning team. I hope I'm wrong, I'm not a fan of Portugal (that's a sentiment from before last Sunday, I promise) and always have a weak spot for those untalented (except a few) gardeners from England. Here's to them winning the game, with Rooney making his first, second en third goal of the tournament.

Brazil - France
If Brazil keeps playing like they did sofar, it's over for them. The France, arrogant as they are, just started realising that the tournament got interesting. After all, we're talking quarter finals here. Everything leading up to this moment was beneath the great stars, I guess. If they want to go for it, there's is little that can stop them, is there? I think not, and Zidane really wants to come full circle, his star started rising after the WC Final in 1998, and now it's time for a final trick. World Champion or not, if France can beat Brazil, it's a fine goodbye for Zizou.

Summary for the semi finals: Germany, Ukraine, Portugal (but hoping for England) and France.

I see your thing alright.

Considering Portugal are missing some of there best players due to Injury such as Deco England probably have the advantage.

Because you have a reputation for predicting correctly & I don't, I'm tempted to agree with all of your forecasts there - in fact I will agree with those predictions in the hope that at least one of them is wrong - correction, two wrong, if my prediction for the Final is actually going to materialise & make money.

COME ON ENGLAND!

BB new [re: JamieSim]

Boris Becker works for German pay-TV Station "Premiere" as some sort of expert. Which he clearly isn't. He was great at tennis but failed with almost anything else afterwards. Bit of a shame.

I was actually asked to work for that station about half a year ago and was meant to head a sports programm which was supposed to be presented by - Boris Becker. I declined.

Re: BB new [re: EJ]

When I was about 8 or 9 years old, I used to play tennis with older kids in the backyard of a local supermarket. They used to call me Becker, because I had freckles and ginger hair and I was beating them all the time!
