Living Anarchy Does Not Mean Chaos new [re: rumblingspires]

The most interesting bit in the article you linked is this:

"The threat of hooligan violence was a major theme leading up to the competition.

But German police were impressed by the way the crowds seemed to manage themselves, cheering on each others' teams and exchanging more shirts, photographs and hugs than angry words or blows.

In Gelsenkirchen, Police President Ruediger von Schenfeldt said that fans from all countries took it upon themselves to keep one another in line."

Fascinating prospect: A world without violence that needs no authorities - the people govern themselves. And who would have thought that it was upon football fans to bring about such fundamental changes.

And I want to believe that a light's shining through somehow

How can you even say that? How come your really disapointed when england wins a game, but over the moon when ze germans won? especially when the oppenent team was far better?
And i wouldn't gloat about englands early exile of the tournament, especially considering how the irish have managed to qualify for one out of the last five major tournaments!

also having to share the team with the Numb Nuts Division that confuses blind optimism alternating with impotent misdirected rage as "passion".

Why do i feel like your talking about me??
I never said that we WILL win the world cup, just said that we have a team CAPABLE of winning the cup, two totally different things. And ultimately, even though our perfomance wasnt as good as expected, the cold truth is, that we basically didnt lose a single game in the tournament, we conseded a goal in only one game (quite well considering how awful robinson and the english defence apparently is, according to people like you anyway), and had rooney not been sent off, then we would most propably be heading on to munich.
''misdirected rage''. So i'm not allowed to be angry for the ref who knocked us out of the tournament? Fuck you.

On current form, the French would have utterly humiliated England

Looking Ahead new [re: Dara]

So who is going to return to Berlin for the final on Sunday? Before the WC started I had predicted that Italy is my European favourite and that they might steal the title if Brazil fail to deliver. So far they haven't convinced but then again Italian teams rarely do and still win something. Italy's strong defense versus Germany's versatile attack - hard to predict. If Italy take the lead they'll probably defend it successfully so Germany's best chances may again lie in a penalty shoot-out as Italy's WC record in that discipline is as bad as England's. My guess: Italy in 90 minutes or Germany on penalties.

The astonishing recovery of Les Vieux from France may just have come in time though they'll find it very hard to get past the well organised Portuguese. I don't expect many goals if any at all and say, well, Portugal on penalties.

And I want to believe that a light's shining through somehow

In reply to:

To make this easier for you, I'll make this multiple choice:

(a) Because I genuinely admire the way the Germans approach the game consistently
(b) Because the Germans paid for us to improve our roads rather than just laughing at how bad they were
(c) Because it's possible to get drunk with a bunch of Germans without having to worry about getting the shit kicked out of you by the end of the night
(d) Because the Germans never invaded or oppressed us
(e) Because I've never met a German as ill mannered, unattractive, uneducated and downright unpleasant as you and the rest of the Engerland Numb Nuts Division
(f) Because their women are better looking than yours
(g) All of the above.

In reply to:

Unlike you, I and most of my countrymen are reasonable in our level of expectation. We'd never expect to win the World Cup with a team with Paul Robinson at one end and an unfit Wayne Rooney as a lone striker at the other. I was 23 years old before Ireland had even qualified for one major tournament final, so I've grown accustomed to deriving my pleasures elsewhere. Like laughing at the impotent rage of your ilk.

When you're a nation of 4 million people, there's no real shame being narrowly edged out by two bigger nations, both of whom then go on to make it to the knockout stages of the final, one of whom is now many people's favourites to win the whole thing.

By contrast, losing a quarter final you should have won to a Decomated Portuguese side...

In reply to:

So i'm not allowed to be angry for the ref who knocked us out of the tournament?

Of course you're allowed, but it's still misdirected. You can get as angry as you like with him but it won't change a damn thing, and it certainly won't increase England's prospects of avoiding another humiliating exit come the next tournament. Whereas if you took on board EJ's intelligent comments about why this German side is doing so well and exceeding expectations, and did whatever you could to ensure there's the kind of culture change in English football that might breed success for once instead of resentful failure, you might get somewhere.

Re: Looking Ahead new [re: EJ]

As a proud European, I get a kick out of the fact that 4 continental European sides have made it to the semifinal.

OK, predictions.

I think the Germans have the big mo as (I think) the Americans say. More importantly they have the big Klo at one end, and the big Jens at the other, so I'm tipping them to continue their triumphant march to Berlin.

The French appear reborn and I think they'll have too much for Portugal. Though the return of Deco means this will be a much stronger Portuguese side than the one Engerland failed to get by, and Scolari is the wiliest manager left in the tournament, so I won't drop dead from shock if they continue the dream.

A German-French final would be a fitting finale to this World Cup, a classic clash between Europe's greatest football nation, and Europe's finest artists.

'ill mannered' - I am unpleasent towards people who are unpleasent towards me, sounds unreasonable? For instance, i disagree with a lot of things with ej, but i'm never unpleasent towards him. But you, i treat you like a wanker, 'cos you act like one.

'unattractive' - the german girls seem to disagree...

'uneducated' - so you judge people by their education? quite shallow i think. So i havent been to college or uni, so i'm a ordinary working man. I cannot see how that possible makes me a lesser person.

'downright unpleasent' - well whatever...

The End Is Nigh new [re: EJ]

One of the great things about this tournament is that each semi final could go either way. And, no matter who wins them, the final is anybody's as well. No overwhelming favourites here.

Italy - Germany could well be one of the best games of the tournament. Both teams have largely confounded prior expectations, both in progress and the manner in which it has been achieved. Even the notoriously defensive-minded Italians have seemed willing to push for a second goal. Perhaps it's a concern that Cannavaro has called on a 'typical Azzuri performance', but with Klose, Ballack, Podolski and Schweinsteiger running at them, the Italian defence will do well to keep a clean sheet.

I suspect that two goals, to either team, will be enough to secure a spot in the final. It'll be close, but with Luca Toni finally hitting the net, and Francesco Totti beginning to wake up to the fact that he has to perform at a major tournament, my money would be on the Italians. Should the game exceed the 90 minute mark, though, I suspect that the home crowd could push the Germans over the line.

France - Portugal could be a massively open game with the opposing mastery and guile of Zidane and Deco pitted against one another. Of course, with both teams also playing two sitting midfielders, it could well be that neither of these exponents of the beautiful game get to impose themselves. Rather, with both sides containing attacking full backs and dangerous wingers on each flank, the worry of leaving gaps for the opposition's flair players could leave this game stifled and scrappy.

Ultimately, the key may be the Portuguese defence's unwillingness to play a high line. With the offside trap already shown to be a potent weapon against Henry in the France side, a refusal or unwillingness to play this way could prove costly for the Portuguese. Allow Henry the space and time to run, with or without the ball, and without the danger of being caught offside at every moment, and he could easily be the player to tear Portugal to pieces. Particularly with the threat of Ribery and Malouda joining from the wings. Portugal should never be written off, but if France can keep up their own little renaissance, I'd expect Les Bleus to emerge triumphant.

Chris...

So your honestly saying that failing to qualify for competitions, year after year, with prehaps one exception here and there every once and a while, doesnt piss you off. Your fucking lying then! So your more happy when england loses then when ireland wins? Thats what it sounds like anyway. I'd be interested to know why your supporting an english football team too, though i seriously doubt that your support is genuine...
