Ireland defied all our expectations and only came fourth, even behind Israel.

All? I do believe I was the only one, yet again, who predicted that the Irish would struggle in that group.

In reply to:

For as long as I've been following football, Ireland have always had at least 4 or 5 players who could get into almost any national side in Europe, or at least the squad.

So you've only been following football since Jack Charlton's reign as Ireland manager?

I don't remember that. That was you? No way. You must be mistaken: you're renowned for uniformly crap predictions and losing football bets of money and confectionery.

In reply to:

I've said it before but I suppose I should say it again for the hard of hearing and the slow of learning: Charlton was lucky to inherit an amazing set of players just about to reach their peak. Paul McGrath, John Aldridge, Packie Bonner, Roy Keane, Ray Houghton, Ronnie Whelan, Kevin Sheedy, Steve Staunton, Dennis Irwin, Chris Hughton et al.

If you think we had no good players before then, you should look up the likes of Liam Brady, Dave O'Leary, Frank Stapleton, Steve Heighway, Jimmy Holmes, Mark Lawrenson, John Giles, Shay Brennan, Jackie Carey and Kevin Moran, to name but a few.

Slan leat,

Greece are probably the most boring team ever!!! I think the Czech Republic could go onto win next year, they played well in Euro 2004 plus they’ve got some great players. I can’t see England winning. Ukraine could also have an outside chance.
Dara I really hope for your countries sake that you're FA sacks your manager. Kerr is rubbish get rid of him. I hope there putting the pressure on him in the Irish Times.

I hoped for France going out new [re: EJSunday]

There were indeed a few interesting surprises in these group stages. Most of all I'm surprised by the performance of the Dutch team, they did better than expected. They have something they've been lacking for years and years: discipline. But I never thought they would beat the Czech's twice. The Dutch side didn't win a match in Prague since 1972, or so I'm told. Still, the team is far from the dominating side I want to see, they do better against teams who are better organised. Then, with players like Robben, Van Nistelrooy and Van Persie they have real killers to finish the job. The Dutch playing a elegant version of cattanacio? If it brings the World Cup, let's do it.

I do fear however that against teams like Brazil or Argentina, the current Dutch side doesn't stand a chance. Not yet. Let's see what Van Basten does next. He still has to loose his first game.

What about the African results? Isn't that a wonderful situation going on there? Fantastic!

Top Of Europe new [re: NoGame]

The Dutch certainly look like they are Europe's strongest team at the moment, at least if we look at the bigger names:

- England struggled heavily against minor sides
- the French are still relying on teir elderly heroes
- the Czechs find it difficult to replace quite a few key players
- Spain, Portugal and Turkey are as erratic as ever
- Germany is far from a successful reconstruction of the team

Italy looks quite cool but they delivered so many disappointments in recent years' competitions that I still do not trust them.

The Dutch are still at the beginning of their reconstruction and they are already going strong. So more can be expected and they may indeed be up to their best right in time next summer. And if Rafael van der Vaart can transfer the performances he currently delivers for Hamburg SV into the national team, there might be a new international star rising during the World Cup. Good prospects for Holland, which is hard to admit for a German.

Re: I hoped for France going out new [re: NoGame]

I hated what happened in africa!! I always like to see african sides do well in the world cup, but this time, with teams like togo and angola, i can't see them progressing from the group stage, prehaps only tunisia has the quality to go futher.
I would like to see australia in the world cup also, but i fear that uruguay is a class higher team. I have high hopes on costa rica though, their last perfomance was a great one(netting 2 goals againt's brazil for starters), and they beated usa 3-0 last month!
Imagine one other thing: either bahrain or trinidad will play in the next world cup! I wonder would D.Yorke be playing for t&t... His currently playing in australia!
But i have all the confidence that even if england has struggled during the past year, they will rise to the same level as in 2002, where they were the second best team, by far!!

3 Norway - Czech Republic

First match on the 11th of November, rematches four days later.

Gentlemen, your predictions, please.

Yes, I guess garnering 8 wins from 10 games & accumulating 25pts is a sure sign of a team struggling Christian? I'm always up for a slice of provocation, but if you're going to use it for fucks sake put a modicum of realism somewhere within your incitations, because I'm finding it increasingly difficult to take you seriously -- Same applies to, Dara, with his unrelenting bias caused by hatred toward anything English - If you people can't make fair & accurate estimations then I'm afraid I'm going to have to decline from contributing to this message board forever.

May this help your memory:

Northern Ireland - England 1:0
England - Austria 1:0
Wales - England 0:1
Aserbaidschan - England 0:1
Austria - England 2:2

I did not say England failed, as that was impossible in that easy group, but England certainly struggled as the above listed results clearly show.

NO! YOU FUCKING LOOK HERE! new [re: EJSunday]

Christ Almighty, Christian, I thought I was the lunatic 'round here!

Of those 5 games you've listed, 3 were victories, one's a draw & a sole defeat at the hands of Northern Ireland! -- Not bad considering experimental sides/tactics including 'B' team players were fielded for most of those matches, IS IT! And hardly the form of a struggling team, IS IT!!

I see your bunch of old hasbeens have begun serious preparations for next summer's Finals by taking on the might of China
