Great mismatches of history new [re: Strawman]

On the subject of Australia, I used to wonder when I was a lad how it got populated by the colonists. I mean, it was a penal colony, and back then the gender balance was even more heavily male skewed than now, and even now you don't get many prison births. Where did the women come from?

Then I was in the Cobh Museum once and came across one of the funniest things I've ever seen. It was a 200 year old letter from some official in Australia thanking an orphanage in Cobh for responding to their request and sending a shipment of young female orphans "of age" to Australia. It noted that given the gender imbalance in Oz, they needed all the women they could get, so further shipments would be similarly appreciated. Then came the funny bit. They said that as regards the first shipment, there had been considerable complaints from the men that the girls sent over showed no respect for them and were in no way compliant or submissive. They requested that any future shipments be more "biddable".

The picture it conjured was vivid: a bunch of convicts waiting eagerly for their "biddable" wives to arrive, and then a bunch of Irish Sheilas getting off the boat, already issuing orders and refusing to take any guff. Convicts versus Irish biddies? No contest.

See, there's a mark of your intelligence right there - even as a youngster you had an enquirable mind that wasn't quite the norm - when I was a lad & the subject of Australia came up I use to think of Skippy.

COME ON ENGLAND!

What's this? Respect for native land rights coming from an Englishmen?

In reply to:

most of the white population of your/their country descend from immigrant convicts.

strange how your country managed to convict and deport all their finest cricketers and athletes.

And what a wonderful reception & welcome those poor bastards are getting

If they're illegal immigrants (as opposed to the thousands asylum seekers/refugees that apply legally and get accepted) then it's going to be tough and largely controversial as is the policy of our current government.

As for legal migrants, then it should be noted that the majority of people living in Australia today are either exactly that or first descendants of.

That many managed to leave behind the betrayal or exploitation they felt by England and piss on the Union Jack in the one process was just a bonus.

I see nothing wrong with having immigrants ( we are civilized countries ) as long as they have a job, more money into the economy, plus they tend to do the jobs others detest.

Where abouts do most of your countries immigrants originate from?

The Finals new [re: diamondogz74]

Back to topic if you don't mind. What are your predictions for the two games left?

Mine are

Portugal - Germany 0:2
Germany without a few players for injury reasons but I suspect them to be more motivated than Portugal to end this tournament on a high. And Klose will try to get the Golden Boot.

Italy - France 2:0
The Italians are simply the better team.

And I want to believe that a light's shining through somehow

Re: The Finals new [re: EJ]

I think Germany will beat Portugal by a couple of goals. I really can't see the Portuguese being up for this game. I think you'd almost have to be the host nation to take the Beaten Losers match seriously.

France-Italy could go either way. Neither is the complete article: the French are weak in defence, and the Italians lack great fire power in front of goal, a defect they've masked well so far. My head says the Italians, my heart the French. For once, I'm going to allow my heart to prevail, so a France inspired by Zizou in his last game to win with a cracking goal from Thierry Henry. Plus as Froggy pointed out, they've got more black players, which is more useful in football than having no kangaroos.

Yes, very well. They've scored 11 goals so far. France have scored 8 goals so far. 10 different Italians have scored. As far as I know, no other team in this World Cup has scored as many goals as Italy. Germany scored 10. Also, no team has scored against Italy so far.

Why are France playing with only one attacker? Italy has started some games with three attackers (Totti, Gilardino, Toni), and some with two (Totti and Toni or Gilardino). Against Germany, they played with four attackers for a long period of time.

Best player of the tournament so far: Cannavaro. Next best: Buffon. Third and fourth best players: Pirlo and Zambrotta.

Re: The Finals new [re: eraserhead]

Apart from the player ranking I agree with Erasehead's opinion. Italy has showen no weakness in any department in the last matches while France were not looking too hot in forward movement against Portugal. Henry got the penalty but as much as I love this guy when he plays for his club, I still don't see him producing his magic in the big tournaments. But it is not his fault this time. His skills are there but the system with him as the lone attacker doesn't create many chances, in fact the Portuguese had the better chances throught the match. Not very many though. France's super-power is in midfield this time, with Makelele and Vieira perfectly closing down the opposition's game when necessary and with Zidane sparkling in offense. But I doubt that this will be enough against an Italian side that has the world's best goalie (the French have a clown), a famously competent defense and the midfield and attack options that allow all style of tactics. France's best chance will be a goal from a set-piece and the subsequent tightness in defensive - if that doesn't happen I can't see France surviving the 90 minutes.

In reply to:

Germany scored 10

Your math is off. The Germans got 4 against Costa Rica, 1 against Poland, 3 against Ecuador, 2 against Sweden, and 1 against Argentina.

Argentina also scored 11.

Italy may have scored more goals than France, but two of those were in extra time. France haven't had to go to extra time because they've managed to win all their knockout games in 90 minutes. That may give them an advantage in the final: it remains to be seen how much the gruelling semi will have taken out of the Italians.

The French have also conceded only one goal more than the Italians, so comparing like with like, there's not a huge difference between the performances to date of the teams as to goals scored and conceded.
