So, if you where so cleaver to realise that back then, why did you tell me about the incident then??

In Germany for the World Cup, are you?

Yes, in freiburg to be excact.

In reply to:

mazing how often you can post then. And at what times!

Oh yeah, i forgot, it's impossible now day to use the internet while your travelling... It's like there's no internet-cafes around, and youth hostels certaintly don't have any internet-access (if i where arlewhino, this would be the time to say ''oh wait...'').

If second is nowhere, then where's third? new [re: EJ]

I've never been a big fan of the third place playoff. Indeed, it seems to me something of a patronising consolation; 'well done, you did very well, have another game on us'. And, even in spite of the last World Cup's being a marvellous display of fair play and comradeship, it was still a bit of a nothing event. That considered, what chance for this year's?

The greatest that can be hoped for is that, with nothing tangible left to play for, Portugal will be encouraged to abandon their diving and simulatory tactics and will simply contest a fun exhibition of skills again a German team that, even with changes in personnel, will not abandon the attacking instincts that have led them so far. It would be a fitting reward for Germany, having put on such a well-organised and friendly finals for them to finish with a victory.

The final has the opportunity to be a great showpiece event. The final chance for a good proportion of the Italian team to put themselves in the shop window before the sinking ship that is Italian domestic football finally goes down. The final chance for Zizou to show the world exactly why he's the greatest player to grace a football pitch since, at the very least, Marco van Basten was terrorising defences. The final chance for a tournament that, having started so promisingly descended into a mostly dire knockout stage, to put on a genuine show of good football. One merely hopes that neither team - and this is particularly the case with the Italians - becomes so overcome with nerves as to concentrate primarily on keeping a clean sheet, and only then to consider attacking. An early Italian goal could kill the final - an early French one could blow it completely open.

Though I, along with many neutrals, would like to see France put in a great final show for Zinedine Zidane, as well as - in all probability - the last time Lillian Thuram is seen on an international arena, I genuinely fear for the French. A game that seems to have its focus in holding firm and picking off the opposition on the break, using quick, darting runs and pinpoint balls could well come up against difficulties in a rearguard containing Buffon, Cannavaro and the shielding talents of Pirlo and Gatusso - a player who has firmly proven me wrong when I stated he was lacking in his usual bite and ferocity. Moreover, with Perotta, Camoranesi, Grosso and Zambrotta showing a willingness to get at full backs, Abidal and Sagnol could find themselves facing some real trouble. Both French wingers enjoy cutting inside, and if they can be caught out of position, the Italian flank attacks could find some real joy. Although Vieira and Makelele are quite capable of moving over and providing an extra defensive wall on whichever wing they may be needed, this would simply invite Totti to drift into the newly created spaces, encouraging one of Gallas or Thuram to come near and close him down. With these gaps opened up, Toni, Gilardino or Iaquinta - whichever Lippi goes for - aren't likely to require more than a couple of invitations. And with Barthez 'goalkeeping', it wouldn't surprise me to see Totti and Pirlo, in particular, trying their luck from distance.

Of course, the presence of Zidane and Henry further up the pitch may be enough to discourage the Italians from committing too many bodies forward at any given time. And should either find the space to run at defenders, the least the French can expect are set piece opportunities from decent positions. Indeed, in spite of the French team's ability with the ball at their feet, I fully expect a set piece to be their greatest chance. Despite Cannavaro's prodigous leap, the Italian team suffers from a genuine lack of height, while the French have it in spades. Vieira, Thuram, Gallas and Henry - his heading 'abilities' notwithstanding - are all tall, physical presences. If just one of them can get free in a penalty area, a well placed, flighted ball in could leave the Italians requiring some heroics from Gianluigi Buffon. The problem is, on current form, one rather expects him to be equal to the task.

Good luck to the French - they may well need it, and I would sincerely like to see them win it again - but the Italians look hot favourites for this cup. Indeed, the one thing that could well harm the Italians would be for them to return to type and play for the 1-0. It's a risky strategy, and, in spite of their superb defensive record, this simply isn't the greatest Italian rearguard we've ever seen. With Nesta, it'd be a damn sight closer. With Materazzi, one always suspects there will be a chance. Or three.

To be honest with you EJ not a lot, I thought Germany played well, I'm not that interested in placings, what matters to me is who wins the title.

In reply to:

Where abouts do most of your countries immigrants originate from?

Australia wide, the largest groups are from the UK, NZ, Italy, Vietnam and China. Melbourne - for example - is the third largest Greek speaking city in the world (after Athens and Thessalonika) and has the largest Italian population outside Italy. There's also significant Chinese, Malay, Phillipino, Jewish, Eastern-European, Irish, Turkish, Cambodian and Lebanese populations whilst the latest wave of immigrants are from North Africa.

Thanks for your answer Adam, I saw a television programme and read a rather large article about your countries Greek immigrants, found it fascinating.

A mighty fine collection of peoples.
