Sexuality And Music new [re: WildWind]

In reply to:

I don't see how anyone can be intolerant of homosexuals and still be a Bowie fan.

Ah, but WildWind of fifteen months ago, surely you can see how many people can consider themselves a "fan" and not give a shit about Bowie's personal life and/or accomplishments? Just like U2 can harp on about their political convictions and their desire to "drop the debt", and other things I find thoroughly bland and boring, yet this wouldn't alter my ability to be a fan of their music (assuming I considered one).

After all. It's all, or at least it should be all, about the music. I can't imagine many people denouncing Bowie's music through a hatred of homosexuality any more than I can see people loving Bowie's music because of his flaunting and blurring of sexuality (even if that was what attracted certain parties to him in the first place).

I love JesusHChrist.

I hope that I can say the things I wish I'd said.

Re: are bowie fans gay? new [re: -ANON-]

Having read eight and a half pages worth of posts on this thread, I find it disturbing. "from the room"'s intentions may have been innocent but they may not. It's been a good way of getting people (who can't resist) to declare themselves as being gay or bi (as some have). Now, anyone who reads this thread can identify who is gay or bi on the board. Now, anyone with evil intent can target them with hate mail (or whatever). I find it disturbing and I'm surprised that Adam hasn't removed it. I know 'free speech' is a good idea, but there are millions of sad bigot bastards out there on planet Earth and they have now gained personal knowledge about many TW'ers.

A person's sexual orientation is their own business. If they choose to declare it, then fine. But if they are duped into declaring it under the pretence of a seemingly innocent question, which actually has an underlying motive that is anything but innocent, then that is dangerous.

Bowie lied (ok, let's say "exaggerated") when he told that Melody Maker reporter that he was gay. He was certainly bi, but if he was gay he'd not have been married twice, had two kids (truly gay people cannot do those things) and gained a reputation, after his early "experimentation", for his sexual exploits with members of the opposite sex. However, his image as a gay icon has persisted now for thirty years - but really only amongst those for whom it is a problem. I have no problem with gays or bis being loud and proud, but I do think that it's worth being careful about whom you tell what and it's a particularly good idea to question the motives of someone who would ask.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works with my paranoia here kiddies, but having spent much of my adult life despising bigots of any hue, the first thing that ocurred to me when I saw the subject of this thread was that it was dodgy. I'm still not convinced that it isn't.

Which they did. So shut up.

There's nothing stopping a homosexual male from marrying a female, if he so wishes. True, so he won't be sexually or romantically attracted to her, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. The marriage to Angie was, by Bowie's account, a strategic move to get her a green card. The marriage to Iman could, conceivably, simply be Bowie's newest image. The happily married, middle-ages heterosexual gentleman. The perfect image for Black Tie White Noise, "conincidentally" the first album he released with said image.

In reply to:

had two kids (truly gay people cannot do those things)

Sure they can. A heterosexual male is fully capable of partaking in sexual relations with a same-sex partner, if he so wishes to experiment, or simply as a sympathy fuck. There's nothing stopping a gay man having sex with a woman either, particularly if they mutually have a desire to have children. True, so he's not sexually attracted to the woman - but you're a Geordie, Stu, surely you know all about sex with unattractive women?

I hope that I can say the things I wish I'd said.

Gay? Nah. I'm ... new [re: beckie]

Bisexual. Rather, I am an "in the closet" bisexual. only 2 close friends know, otherwise, people percieve me as straight. Yes, I am a girl and dress a little on the boyish side, but i am bisexual. I was bi before I was a Bowie fan, so for me, it helped me be more happy with who I am.

Sure, people are homophobes or poeple only know bowie as "Isn't he gay?" / "Wasn't he gay in the 70's?" but Bowie showed his true colours to people and they got scared. Yet, he is still making an absolutely wonderful mark on society, whether he was/is "gay". It doesnt matter.

As long as you know, then that should be all there is. I am the only Bowie fan in my school and in my family/friends. They all seem to have silently retreated as the years of fandom progressed. They, I wouldn't say fully, but understand I am who I am and I listen to who I listen to. Whether the artist is gay or striaght.

Yeah, thanks for the completely pointless retort. You're completely missing the point as usual (no wonder you're failing both of your 'A' levels). Anyone is free to come out publicly if they so desire (as I said), but to do so at the instigation of an anonymous poster who elicits the information by stating that "everyone" he/she mentions Bowie to says that Bowie fans are gay, is a little careless. The point I was trying to make was that the motivation of the person who said that (a non-registered poster) may not be innocent and may in fact be a means of identifying targets so that they can initiate some form of cyber-stalking activity for their particular hate-motivated agenda. I'm sure most of the people who posted replies are not as suspicious as me and such concerns would not have occurred to them as they did, immediately, to me (but I'm proud to be paranoid).

You're wrong here. But you're only 16 so you probably haven't much experience of life, (especially living in roundabout land).

In reply to:

Oh, and I'm just a straight sixteen year old.
[To be sang to the tune "I'm just a sweet transvestite..."]

How is that possible, by the way, if you were born on May 3, 1984?.

Next time you're passing The Dog pop in and ask some of the boys there if they reckon they'd be capable of getting an erection and having sexual intercourse with a woman (however butch). The gay ones, the truly gay ones, will admit that they couldn't do it, if they're being truthful. I'm sure bis wouldn't have any problem (witness Bowie).

In reply to:

you're a Geordie, Stu, surely you know all about sex with unattractive women?

I've known some extremely attractive Geordie women, actually (biblically and platonically). Every town has it's less attractive people, of course. You're probably in a position to comment on the beast quotient in Washington, Chris (every time you look at your tubby-assed self in the mirror, I suspect).

Metal Machine Music????? Are you completely insane? I wouldn't order that if amazon were giving me 8.99 to take it off their hands.

Stop farting about on this board and get On the Black Hill finished. Or nip down to Blockbuster in Victoria Road, or Zodiac in Valley Forge, and rent the video (which is not bad, despite the dull story, Bob Peck is particularly good). That essay about its social relevance is due on Monday.

That's brutal and lethal and slowly invades
The figures have risen, the bigotry grown

The message is simple and obvious, please -
Just lay off the patients and let's fight the disease

twister, you'll need to separate more than just his personal life / accomplishments.

Bowie's gender bending is clear through out much of his lyrics and album artwork (for anyone who knows it extensively). A homophobe might argue it's there for the sake of art. But I'd be surprised if a true biggot could rationalise objectively in light of his/her prejudices.

i'm heterosexual, but very accepting to the gay community. one of my best male friends is gay and i love him to death! i'm in college in a 'southern' part of my state, and people still pick on the homosexuals here. but i'm nice to them. i don't fear them in any way and i think bowie's helped me out a lot. if i had not found 'john i'm only dancing' at the age i did, i'd probably be like everyone else around me: homophobic and proud of it.

I'm female and straight. My boyfriend is male and straight. We are straight. We like Bowie. There.

Anyway, like many have said before, we are extremely accepting of the gay community. Extremely. Gays should have exactly the same rights as straight people, should not be looked down upon, should not be treated differently, simply because of what gender happens to get their hormones flowing...
