What an interesting post. I'm surprised to see how heavily gay/bisexual the responses have been so far.

I guess I am in the minority, but I am a 30-year-old straight male, married, with two kids. As far as I know, I am not in denial!

By the way, I'm not sure I get the "gay as Christmas" line from Beckie. Can someone enlighten me?

I'm not gay. I love Bowie. And Beckie, I had no clue that Christmas was gay. Thanks for telling me;)
And yes, I get alot of repsonses like that when I tell people that I listen to Bowie. They're like "Oh, you listen to that guy. He's gay you know." And I simply reply "Well then he's one gay man who's married to a woman who is 20,000 times more gorgeous and intelligent than anyone you'll ever meet." They never know what to say after that.

Re: are bowie fans gay? new [re: from the room]

Naturally, most Bowie fans I feel are either gay or a litle more accepting of the gay community.

The problem is most non-Bowie fans fans only remember the "Hi, i'm both ways, love to wear make-up and dress like a girl."

That's the big problem with non-fans, they don't even know he still releases records in some cases. Still, who cares if someone is gay or not. I do know that he had a huge impact on my sexuallity when I was a very young lad, so if it wasn't for him ? Well, I hate to wonder how I would have turned out.

Also, for alot of males, it's hard to say to their mates they like Bowie, 'cause in this world, if they say such a thing, their mates might think them a "poof". Sad isn't it?

Well, one can be assured he has most likely had more woman in his bed than most guys have had wanks. ;-)

I don't think this had much to do with fan level.. new [re: Sylvanelf]

I've found that Bowie fans are more open minded in general. I myself am bisexual....I think. I suppose bicurious is a more appropriate term. I suppose my sexuality is as of yet undefined.....I pin it down as bi.

Bowie had nothing to do with this. I suppose listening to his music, and knowing more about him helped me become more comfortable with it. I mean look at this guy! He's done really out there, flamboyant stuff and he doesn't show much regret. I admire his confidence. His music and art has helped in the area, but they certainly are two completely different issues.

I'm female, heterosexual and single. I would just LOVE to find meself a straight male Bowie fan. However, I find that there are few. I have some male friends that like Bowie, but they're all gay.

I think there are many more straight male Bowie fans in Europe than in the US though, but that may just be because Bowie's more popular in general there.

I don't see how anyone can be intolerant of homosexuals and still be a Bowie fan. So much of his history was about blurring the gender line, and although I don't think that should be the primary focus of his life, it's an undeniable part of his history that you'd have to completely eschew if you're a homophobe.

You'll also notice that there is much more Gore and Nader support on this board than Bush support. I think it's kinda hard to be a Bowie fan if you're generally conservative.

Wow. So many gays. Weird. No offence or anything like, but you would figure with gays being in the minority in general, you would think within any smaller section of society (i.e. Bowie fans) the minorities would stay consistent.

Well, that's what I would have expected anyways. Or maybe the gays just felt more compelled to answer this thread than the straight guys.

I happen to love Bowie, and I am NOT a lesbian, thank you very much, nor do I have anything against those who are. People who believe that a certain type of music, or a certain type of performer defines what a person is are complete hypocrites! I know some people who are gay and are Bowie fans, but I know PLENTY who are straight, like myself. It's degrading to make gross generalizations about the human population based on your own, and from your post very limited and clouded, point of view. Racial/gender/religions slander only makes a person look less inteligent, and more biased. People can be biased if they like in private, but those oppinions are best kept to themselves and not expressed in public. They can backfire and leave a nasty burn, even over the net.

gay/bi/straight Bowie fans new [re: Roxy641]

I'm bisexual, and was long before I got interested in Bowie. I've noticed that most of the girl posters are bi, and most of the guys are either completely gay or completely straight......it's interesting, anyway.
I think one of the things I like most about Bowie's looks (especially during the 1970s) was the fact that he looked like a man and a woman. The term androgynous is misleading for him, I think, because he can look like both sexes at once instead of neither. Another reason I can think for the high percentage of women bisexuals is the fact that it's easier for women to be bi than men. I think that straight men are more likely to get defensive around men they think/know are homosexual than are girls -the straight girls I know are more likely to take same sex interest as a compliment. Anyway, that might just be my weird friends!

I have always wondered about having certain musical tastes that seem to dictate someone's sexual preferences..Sexual preferences are only 10% of a person's life...Let's concentrate on the other 90 and quit worrying about who is gay and who is not. So what...What does it have to do with loving Bowie? I am straight...oooh I admit it, straight as an arrow with tendancies to lean a bit at times...Fear not WildWind, there are straight men who love Bowie too...they are just less likely to admit it because they struggle with their masculinity...I am proud to say my husband likes Bowie and as far as I know he's straight, but then he dosen't care what people think and he's comfortable with who he is. I am glad so many people here felt comfortable sharing their sexual preferences, there is nothing more attractive than honesty and openmindedness. xoxoxox

Whether or not Bowie fans are gay, what does it matter. Some are, and some are not. That's like assuming that all Sinatra fans are Italian mobsters, or that all Italians are mobsters even. Generalizations are unfair to the people who do not fit into them, as well as those who might. This post has shown that a lot of fans are gay, a lot are straight, and even bi-sexuals are fans....SO WHAT? Is it going to become a rule that you should come out of the closet if you're planning on buying a Bowie CD?

Just my opinion. Either you share it, or you don't share it. That's my point.

But yes, i feel there is a connection between my bisexuality and my Bowie-fandom, it helped me become conscious about it. Markx2 here...If you were to put this post in just about any fansite you'd get the same responses from those people if they were to admit to anything. This is a diverse world we live in. It's a shame that people still are like that with Bowie fans I think they get that from the ignorant parents who still remember the "I'm Bi" statement of the 70's I totally agree with what Diamond Dave said about it all. I went through the same thing I remember one of my friends asking a teacher if he liked Bowie and he said "no he likes what dangles between my legs"...I was pisssed! Let's just say he had a little trouble getting home that day lol. Hey, I'm a New Yorker what can I say? That was then this is now. My advice to the one who started this post is to get past all that and stay true to your choices in music and everything else for that matter or do what I do, convert them..it's not hard. I'm talking about becomming a Bowie fan.

i feel very out of place now. i had no idea that many of you were gay! Not that i have a problem with that. Im straight, and i dont see whats so strange about loving bowies music as a straight man. Even if there were such a thing as "gay" music, i wouldnt put bowie in that category. I do agree that when you tell someone your a bowie fan, they tend to wonder if your gay. But i had no idea that they did this because the majority of the fans are actually gay. Im just letting you know that some of us are straight.

I just think the p[oint of the original post was wondering whether Bowie's dalliance with sexual intrigue in the 1970s made his music more receptive to, or struck a chord with people with complex sexuality. No sweeping statements were made or claimed. Your reactions have all been very interesting, now can we get on with our lives.

But he was a Jew. There's simply no denying that. He's not a Christian because Christians worship Jesus. That would mean he worships himself, and that would make him a Satanist. He would still be a Jew because he never claimed to be anything more than a prophet and that's what they view him as. And I don't think he could be called a rabbi. There's training involved in that, and he was trained to be nothing more than a carpenter.

Actually, I suppose that JesusHChrist has claimed to be the Son of God somewhere along the way, so that would make him something other than a Jew: simply Christ. A being with no religion. God doesn't worship anything, but Jesus did while he was a man.

I also know six other bowie fans (or ones of the past) who are not gay at all. 5 of them being happily, or atleast just married. =) It is an interesting thing to look at, because most people do not see bowie as attracting strait "upstanding" citizens. But, o contrar he is the attracting force of many kinds of people. That is one reason I love him so much...

Most of the Bowie fans I know (not that many of them, unfortunately) all over the country are 100% straight. Bowie doesn´t seem to have a cult following among gay people here. They much prefer Ricky Martin. The average bowie fan here could be better described as "artsy".

Re: are bowie fans gay? new [re: from the room]

Bowie's music is not "gay". It doesn't suggest changing your sexual preference from "straight" to "gay", rather it suggests breaking your "gender role" - dictated by the society in which you live. Basically, society tells you how to act if you want to be considered a "man" or a "lady". If you are a boy you have to do things that are considered "masculine", and if you're a girl "feminine".

Bowie was rebelling against conforming to a gender role. Others rebel about other things. Rappers rebel against police for telling them what to do, or how to live, or what drugs they use in their own homes. Bowie experimented with his gender all the time, while the rest of us need an excuse, like Halloween or Carnivale to dress up and act as a member of the opposite sex (with an opposite gender role).

To begin to answer the question of whether Bowie fans are gay, we should think about why Bowie=gay. There are gay men who shock us when they tell us they are gay. That is because their sexuality is homosexual, but they still conform to their gender role of acting like a "man". However, the most visible gay men are the ones that play with their gender as well, and act "feminine". From this stereotype we reason that feminine=gay. And because Bowie wore makeup, and society tells us that only women wear makeup, we reason that Bowie=feminine. We then derive that if Bowie=feminine and feminine=gay, then Bowie=gay. It's a TRANSITIVE relationship (go look it up at Dictionary.com). All of this reasoning, however, is incorrect. In fact it is completely ignorant.

If you are still confused, what I'm saying is that being gay has nothing to do with "acting feminine". So Bowie's "acting feminine" has nothing to do with his sexual preference. Furthermore, my listening to David Bowie does not make me anything that he is, anyway.

I'm bad at sports and I throw like a girl. But I'm sure about my sexuality -- I'm heterosexual.

"I'm bad at sports and I throw like a girl. But I'm sure about my sexuality -- I'm heterosexual."

Barbarino (that brings Welcome Back Kotter to my mind...) I'm bad at sports and I throw like a girl too. I AM a girl and I am a lesbian. You see, and you probably know, that the way someone acts and what they like usually means squat when it comes to their sexuality. Everyone thinks I'm straight until they know otherwise. I don't show up on peoples' gaydar very well, unfortunately.

And the reaction I usually get when I tell someone I like Bowie, they seem to just take it as another part of my hyper-liberal personality. That is, until they see the slew of actual albums in my CD case... BTW, Bowie has nothing to do with the fact I'm gay, and vice versa. I was born that way. I remember slow dancing with a very close "girlfriend" back in fourth grade or so. It's always been a "built-in" thing for me.

In reply to:

I don't see how anyone can be intolerant of homosexuals and still be a Bowie fan.

Ah, but WildWind of fifteen months ago, surely you can see how many people can consider themselves a "fan" and not give a shit about Bowie's personal life and/or accomplishments? Just like U2 can harp on about their political convictions and their desire to "drop the debt", and other things I find thoroughly bland and boring, yet this wouldn't alter my ability to be a fan of their music (assuming I considered one).

After all. It's all, or at least it should be all, about the music. I can't imagine many people denouncing Bowie's music through a hatred of homosexuality any more than I can see people loving Bowie's music because of his flaunting and blurring of sexuality (even if that was what attracted certain parties to him in the first place).

I love JesusHChrist.

Re: are bowie fans gay? new [re: -ANON-]

Having read eight and a half pages worth of posts on this thread, I find it disturbing. "from the room"'s intentions may have been innocent but they may not. It's been a good way of getting people (who can't resist) to declare themselves as being gay or bi (as some have). Now, anyone who reads this thread can identify who is gay or bi on the board. Now, anyone with evil intent can target them with hate mail (or whatever). I find it disturbing and I'm surprised that Adam hasn't removed it. I know 'free speech' is a good idea, but there are millions of sad bigot bastards out there on planet Earth and they have now gained personal knowledge about many TW'ers.

A person's sexual orientation is their own business. If they choose to declare it, then fine. But if they are duped into declaring it under the pretence of a seemingly innocent question, which actually has an underlying motive that is anything but innocent, then that is dangerous.

Bowie lied (ok, let's say "exaggerated") when he told that Melody Maker reporter that he was gay. He was certainly bi, but if he was gay he'd not have been married twice, had two kids (truly gay people cannot do those things) and gained a reputation, after his early "experimentation", for his sexual exploits with members of the opposite sex. However, his image as a gay icon has persisted now for thirty years - but really only amongst those for whom it is a problem. I have no problem with gays or bis being loud and proud, but I do think that it's worth being careful about whom you tell what and it's a particularly good idea to question the motives of someone who would ask.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works with my paranoia here kiddies, but having spent much of my adult life despising bigots of any hue, the first thing that ocurred to me when I saw the subject of this thread was that it was dodgy. I'm still not convinced that it isn't.

There's nothing stopping a homosexual male from marrying a female, if he so wishes. True, so he won't be sexually or romantically attracted to her, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. The marriage to Angie was, by Bowie's account, a strategic move to get her a green card. The marriage to Iman could, conceivably, simply be Bowie's newest image. The happily married, middle-ages heterosexual gentleman. The perfect image for Black Tie White Noise, "conincidentally" the first album he released with said image.

In reply to:

had two kids (truly gay people cannot do those things)

Sure they can. A heterosexual male is fully capable of partaking in sexual relations with a same-sex partner, if he so wishes to experiment, or simply as a sympathy fuck. There's nothing stopping a gay man having sex with a woman either, particularly if they mutually have a desire to have children. True, so he's not sexually attracted to the woman - but you're a Geordie, Stu, surely you know all about sex with unattractive women?

I hope that I can say the things I wish I'd said.

Bisexual. Rather, I am an "in the closet" bisexual. only 2 close friends know, otherwise, people percieve me as straight. Yes, I am a girl and dress a little on the boyish side, but i am bisexual. I was bi before I was a Bowie fan, so for me, it helped me be more happy with who I am.

Sure, people are homophobes or poeple only know bowie as "Isn't he gay?" / "Wasn't he gay in the 70's?" but Bowie showed his true colours to people and they got scared. Yet, he is still making an absolutely wonderful mark on society, whether he was/is "gay". It doesnt matter.

As long as you know, then that should be all there is. I am the only Bowie fan in my school and in my family/friends. They all seem to have silently retreated as the years of fandom progressed. They, I wouldn't say fully, but understand I am who I am and I listen to who I listen to. Whether the artist is gay or striaght.

Yeah, thanks for the completely pointless retort. You're completely missing the point as usual (no wonder you're failing both of your 'A' levels). Anyone is free to come out publicly if they so desire (as I said), but to do so at the instigation of an anonymous poster who elicits the information by stating that "everyone" he/she mentions Bowie to says that Bowie fans are gay, is a little careless. The point I was trying to make was that the motivation of the person who said that (a non-registered poster) may not be innocent and may in fact be a means of identifying targets so that they can initiate some form of cyber-stalking activity for their particular hate-motivated agenda. I'm sure most of the people who posted replies are not as suspicious as me and such concerns would not have occurred to them as they did, immediately, to me (but I'm proud to be paranoid).

Next time you're passing The Dog pop in and ask some of the boys there if they reckon they'd be capable of getting an erection and having sexual intercourse with a woman (however butch). The gay ones, the truly gay ones, will admit that they couldn't do it, if they're being truthful. I'm sure bis wouldn't have any problem (witness Bowie).

In reply to:

Bowie's gender bending is clear through out much of his lyrics and album artwork (for anyone who knows it extensively). A homophobe might argue it's there for the sake of art. But I'd be surprised if a true biggot could rationalise objectively in light of his/her prejudices.

Hey - you learned that you need to step away from misplaced generalisations based on location to actual personal details to insult someone. Nice work, Stu. As for your "point", you think people can "come out" if they so desire, but should be careful if they're being asked. Personally, I think that's pretty stupid, this thread is basically perfect for anyone that does want to proclaim their sexuality, and anyone that doesn't simply won't. No-one's going to come here and say "by the way I'm gay!", so this anonymous poster asking gives people the chance should they want to.

In reply to:

The master of research that you are, Stu, fails to have taken into account the date that my original post was actually made.

In reply to:

The gay ones, the truly gay ones, will admit that they couldn't do it, if they're being truthful.

I don't think that's entirely true. I think they would probably believe that, but Stu - assuming you're a heterosexual male (I apologise if I'm jumping to conclusions), go find yourself a nice fellow, and see if he isn't capable of arousing you. Plenty of heterosexual people resigned to same-sex environments have resorted to same-sex relations, and the physical act of being aroused, regardless of sexual orientation, can be brought out by certain acts. We can all turn ourselves on, regardless of the fact we don't swing our own way. Find yourself a nice boy to touch you, and lick you a bit, see what pops up.

Or if this is all too much for you, let's just say there's no actual physical proof that Bowie's two children actually are Bowie's children.

Devil's Love new [re: Adam]

In reply to:

I'd be surprised if a true biggot could rationalise objectively in light of his/her prejudices.

I wouldn't. I think by and large most of the "gender bending" that comprises "much of his lyrics" is only there if you are pre-disposed to find it. Rebel Rebel can be consider a gay love-song, for instance, yet the beauty of the song is that every single line can be interpreted one way or the other (for instance "your face is a mess" can refer to either the boy that wears makeup, or the girl that forsakes it - the line "you've torn your dress" can refer to either the boy that wears the dress, or the girl that doesn't take care of it) - and one not predisposed to finding it would perhaps miss it entirely. The song The Width Of A Circle is widely regarded as relating to a homosexual experience (perhaps more specifically Bowie's personal first), but depending on how one interprets the song it can be seen as either a liberating experience freeing him from the narrow-minded bigots if modern society, or as a dirty, sinful experience that leaves him outcast from a society of gods. I can't think of any explicitly pro-homosexual lyrics from Bowie's entire career, certainly none that couldn't be taken a different way.

As for cover-art, the only thing that comes to mind is The Man Who Sold The World, and perhaps Hunky Dory. As you said, a homophobe may argue it's there for the sake of art - or even to say it's supposed to be a disgusting image. The Man Who Sold The World is a very dark album, it may seem perfectly fitting for a bigot to use an image of a man in drag to open such a dark album.

Bowie's use of the Ziggy character could easily be interpreted differently also. He wasn't being a regular, gay person. In fact, he's always claimed to be heterosexual ever since he gave his "average guy" persona of 1983 to the present day. Ziggy Stardust was a freak, a red-haired, cross dressing, bi-sexual rocker from another planet. Bowie's personification of Ziggy could very easily be interpreted as saying that being bisexual is not a normal thing to be. Being an alien is not normal, having bright red hair is not normal, he characterised bisexuality as being part of this "otherness". In a way it was flat out insulting to gay or bisexual people.

And even if a bigot didn't hold these particular views on Bowie's art, there's no reason one still couldn't be a big fan that regarded him as having "a bit of a poof period" in the early seventies.

I hope that I can say the things I wish I'd said.

This Post new [re: twister]

I've found this a really interesting post. It seems that someone with a very one-sided view of the whole subject of David Bowie, his fans and his music, has posted a potentially inciteful and provocative comment in a community which undoubtedly does accept the homosexual way of life a lot more than others. What's interesting is the lack of stupid 'fuck off and die' answers that have come from this. Virtually every post regarding this has been a personal response and has been handled really well. cool.

Just as an aside, I'm one of the entirely straight bowie fans...

are bowie fans gay? new [re: TheCrackedActor]

Well, while were on the subject.... I love bowie and I am a straight female.. however i do think women are incredibly attractive, in many cases more attractive thant males. And when i ask people if they like bowie the males tend to be oversensitive and become rude. I know one male who admits to enjoying bowies music and he is a wee bit flamboyant and odd.. but for the most part hes straight. But it cuts both ways. I love Ani Difranco and when I ask people if they like here nine times out of ten both male and females reaction includes the words/phrase 'shes a dyke' 'shes a lesbian' 'shes an angry lesbo' and unless i find a true blue fan the answer is always that they greatly dislike her. my college roommate infact hates both bowie and ani based on their views and sexual preference. I think they are both talented beyond words and F'kn hot! no wonder they attract the other sex.

There are certain people in my life who insist that you don't know that you're gay unless you've "experimented." No disrespect to these folks, I love them dearly, but if that's true, how do I know I'm straight? Maybe I don't! I mean, so many people think I'm a lesbian, perhaps it's true. Is bowie gay? new [re: beckie]

Ok. I am tired of everyone's "Is Bowie Gay?" shit. A friends of mine just asked if he was, and I had to tell her he is happily married to Iman. First she asked if he was married. I said "Yes, to Iman." second Q: "I thought he was gay." I said he was in the 70s to 1980, where he experiments with both sexes, BUT he was a declared bisexual.

I wanna know, wtf is up with these people? Yes, he was "gay", but no, he is not screwing around now with some bloke in the woods. I am sorry if i offend anyone. I just wanted to vent this out, and i thought this would be a good thread to do so.

Add the artwork of Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs, not to mention the transvestite imagery of Ziggy Stardust. His image around the time of Diamond Dogs was very gay, large girly earing, makeup, and clothing. Add the bracelets and makeup which continued into the Thin White Duke era. The 1979 video for Boys Keep Swinging, Bowie in 3 different types of drag singing "when you're a boy, other boys check you out", the 1996 video for Hallo Spaceboy, Bowie in stiletto heels, long dangly diamond earing singing "do you like boys or girls, it's confusing these days". In a woman's dress singing "he showed me the leather belt round his hips" and speaking of "The Church of Man-Love". An effiminate character singing "If you want it boys, get it here thing". "Now Jimmy looks sweet cause he dresses like a Queen.....oh yes we can love". "He was really quite paradise". The 1979 Saturday Night Live performance singing in a woman's skirt. Videos as late as 1984's "Loving the Alien" with Bowie heavily doused in lipstick and makeup. An effiminate man wearing a pierrot costume singing "they came down hard on the faggots, they took away our clothes and things". And of course, Bowie's most famous stage gesture of all time - implying fellatio to Mick Ronson.

That's just off the top of my head, and most of it is from his classic, renowned period. Sure you can squabble over individual points and interpretations, but John, don't get me wrong, you started building an argument which says it "is only there if you are pre-disposed to find it". Frankly, you'd have to be extraordinarily dumb not to consider at least some of it as gender bending, especially in a more conservative American setting where these types of gestures are much more foreign to the rock scene. And as I said before, it is highly unlikely a homophobe would miss it or be able to rationalise in spite of their prejudice.

Well, Adam has pretty much covered all the bases, but I'd like to add one more thing.

Homophobes are by their very nature judgmental of people's personal lives. Keep in mind that these are people who think that a person is less of a boss/co-worker/grocery clerk/human being because of what s/he does behind closed doors.

I don't think a rock star would be any different for them - the rock stars they love would be firmly grounded in their machismo or femininity, and probably prejudiced as well.

That's not to say that there can't be a song or two that they might like, assuming that they're ignorant of details of the artist. But once they find out a bit more, they'd run, and they certainly couldn't be fans to the extent that we are, where they'd go out of their way to post on a message board devoted to the man. They would inevitably have to face threads like these, after all, which would be far too disconcerting for them.

I'll bet you there are. To say there aren't many gay Eminem fans is akin to saying that all Eminem's fans are homophobic, which is, of course, ridiculous. Eminem's lyrics are often anti-gay, yes - or to be more precise more making a mockery of gay than flat out hatred, but this only means Eminem will lose the fandom of those incapable of taking anything as something other than completely literally. I, for one, do not believe he has raped his mother, or comes equipped with a "go-go-gadget dick" either.

I think that's really the crux of Eminem's career. His ability to very skillfully lyrically blur the lines between what is and isn't real, from completely absurd fantasies to gritty realism.

Besides, the man's chockablock full of wit and comedy. I don't think he's lashing out at gays because of a hatred, but rather because he can get some nice wordplay out of it.

Of course, if you do take Eminem's lyrics literally you have to also believe that he killed a girl at a party (after a magic mushroom overdose), he killed his wife and had his infant daughter help dispose of the body ("you gonna help daddy tie mommy to this rock? / we'll tie it to her footsy and we'll roll her off the dock"), his mum hit him on the head with a remote control once - causing his skull to crack and his brain fall out - which he held in his hands as he screamed at her, his second career choice if he couldn't be a rapper was to be "a fucking rapist in a Jason mask", that he raped his own mother, that he's HIV positive, oh - and finally that he makes up half the things he says to enrage people.

I saw a homosexual protestor speaking out against Eminem on TV once. Saying Eminem's lyrics were pure bigotry - and that "if he were going around saying 'nigger this' and 'nigger that', then he'd be shot". I found that hilarious. On the one hand, because Eminem does say "nigger this" and "nigger that", and also because this gay man clearly had black people penned down as bad, gun totin', mother fuckers!

I hope that I can say the things I wish I'd said.

well, i would call it skillful. he is just one of the wanna-be troublemakers provoking as bold as possible - like marylin manson - which isnt really a big thing if you say things you don't mean serious. he is just a pretty dumb person trying to built up an image. but rapping things like this is really dangerous, especially for people of lower intellect (who are his target group) and people not really listening to his songs (me) - because they are played in the background of a supermarket - who just dont get what he is saying. so he forms some people's opinion though he maybe does not really want to. and so he is responsible for any action caused by his lyrics.

I was a heterosexual young man with posters of Gillian Anderson on his walls and not even the slightest of homosexual inclinations when I bought my very first David Bowie CD. "ChangesBowie" for those who care.

It's about two years later, I've been through a loving relationship with a beautiful woman and out the other side. I still like women, and I still have absolutely zero interest in doing anything remotely homosexual.

Music is art, it's about breaking free from a label people are eager to slap on you. Music doesn't define who I am. I define what music I like.
And David Bowie is God. He just changed His name to Bowie to fool all of us. ;)

You're right. That was quite the oversight on my part. I should point out, however, that on the song Criminal Eminem sings: "I drink malt liquor to fuck you up quicker, than you'd wanna fuck me up for saying the word 'nigger'" - but seen as the word 'nigger' is (by Eminem's own decision) removed from the song, I concede. Though it should be said the word makes a more than abundant appearance throughout The Marshall Mathers LP, even though it is never uttered directly by Marshall himself.

I happen to be a fan of Eminem as well as a Bowie fanatic. I'm also a fan of Britney Spears and AC/DC. I don't listen to Bowie music because he, at times, questioned his sexuality. I don't listen to Eminem because he never has. I really don't care much about who is behind the album I happening to be listening to, I only care about the music. I am not trying to make a point or create an image by what I like to dance to, drive to, chill to. I listen to what makes me happy; what makes me feel good. I hate this overly political crap! I embrace all people no matter the color of their skin, the language they speak, or what makes them cream their damn jeans!! I do realize that some bands/artists try to represent things or issues. I'm not blind. I hear Em say faggot, just as I hear Dre say nigger, or any other artist add any other derogatory term to their music. There is a difference in the intent. If we are going to spout out about all the horrible stuff in music, look not to popular music as an easy target. This stuff is marketed. It's not just Marshall Mathers in there. It's all kinds of record company personnel and you can't say they're all anti-gay. This stuff made it through to MTV. So just shut up and turn your attention to more disturbing things. There are many. For example, what about the nazi punk music? Yeah. I've seen things and they aren't nearly as pretty as Em's blond whiney ass. Wake up all of you and waste your time on something that deserves the anger you seem to hold for prejudice. Or maybe you could all just get off of your computers and go out there and make a difference.
To answer the question in the original post. No, all Bowie fans are not gay. Not all Dr. Dre's fans are black, now are they?

And, by the way, Bowie has said himself often enough that he's never really been gay- and not even bisexual. The Unreal Slim Shady new [re: th0mas]

Far be it from me (I don’t believe I’m actually doing this) to agree with twister, but even though I think Eminem is on the crap side of average (let’s face it, he rode to stardom on Dido’s back), he’s not really as bad (PC-wise) as the tabloid media like to sensationalise him into appearing.

While the old free-speech argument comes into play, there is, more relevantly, a strongly ironic aspect to his work that goes way over the head of the overtly politically correct (who have even less of a sense of humour than twister). The tabloids are also incapable of comprehending irony, not because they are PC, but because sensationalism sells papers. Couple that with back-bench politicians who see self-promotion mileage in expressing outrage at something that Mr and Mrs Joe Public will feel outraged about and you have disinformation flying in every possible direction.

What Eminem is doing is expressing the way that real people (OK, American working class white trash – close) think. He doesn’t necessarily agree with the opinions that he expresses (I’m sure IceT doesn’t really want to kill police officers either), nor is he recounting actual incidents (oedipal activities, wife murder, etc). His use of the word “nigger” has to be seen in context. His “possee” (I forget what they’re called) are mostly African-American. Do you think those guys would work with him if they though he was a racist? His music is rap. That is an urban African-American art form. Do you think he’d sell records, at the volumes that he is doing, to an audience of redneck Garth Brooks lovers? He’s come along twenty years after Johnny Rotten told Bill Grundy to fuck off on live TV. Do you think he doesn’t realise the value of shock tactics?

Most of his audience have the intellectual capacity to appreciate both his irony and his (I admit) ability to express, lyrically, concepts and scenarios which are not generally present in popular music. Most of his audience are not fooled by reactionary nonsense, fortunately. Why do you think Elton John (who’s as camp as a row of tents) did Stan’s Song (or whatever it’s called) at the Grammys with him last year? Because Elton is smart enough to know (from personal, bitter, experience) that what some journo twat prints in tomorrows chip paper isn’t worth shit.

Actually, most rednecks think Garth Brooks is a puss. Most of his audience consists of pop-country fans or middle-aged, upper-middle class women who have cowboy fantasies but are threatened by anyone too rugged.

The rednecks listen to Robert Earl Keen, George Strait, George Jones, Hanks Sr. and Jr. (but not III - he's too progressive for them), Alan Jackson, and that sort of thing.

I like all of the above.

Yeah, sorry WW (I knew you’d get on my case when I mentioned ---swoon--- Garthy baby).

I know Garth Brooks isn’t really redneck material, he was just the only country singer I could think of off the top of my (not wearing a huge hat) head apart from my good friend (OK, I met him last Monday night for about 5 minutes) Kinky Friedman who, being a liberal Texas Jewboy would probably go down like a lead balloon with the rednecks.

Sorry to cause trouble again, dear twister, but I take serious issue with your referring to man-hating jokes as "feminist."

Feminists, the ones with a brain anyway, are not about putting men down and creating more stereotypes. Their goal is to create equality, not further division.

The equation of ball-busting man-haters with feminism is one of the reasons that it continues to be difficult for feminists with a clue to actually make a difference.

Definetly is not gay music, and if it was, great. I don´t care if Crist-mas is gay or jehova or Bush. Bowie is art, to open the mind. that´s all

Clearly the inverse is true. Simply look at who was 'famous' or 'a star' first. Eminem had sold millions of albums before the song sampling Dido was even released. While he undoubtedly used her voice in that track to his benefit, I would argue that she benefitted from the partnership more than he. Without Eminem, her album that was released some 2 years ago would still be languishing in the bottom shelf of very few cd stores.

So far, i`ve never known a gay who is a Bowie fan. Just because Bowie has himself tried both sides doesn`t mean we fans do. I just hate this kind of questions. I believe the next question would be: "How can you listen to a fag?" I just hope that someday people realise that music and peoples sexual tendencies aren`t necessrily connected! The fact that people might think i`m gay doesn`t really bug me. What bugs me is when people say there`s something wrong being one. Didn`t Bowie once say: " I`ve been in gay clubs, they play Barry White, not Rebel Rebel". Ofcourse the question came from someone who`s gay, so maybe I shouldn`t be mad. Now I`m really confused.

Speaking as a heterosexual, I find/found Ziggy to be really attractive/sexy and completely beautiful....but I prefer Bowie as "himself" or rather as he is now....with no masks
As for Prince....yes, yummy in "Purple Rain"
as my friends and I in college paid to see this many times at the theater...we all thought he was the perfect definition of yummy sex!!
Michael Jackson.....no, I'm afraid not
And Robert Plant & Freddie Mercury....definately, in their own way....hair definately has a lot to do with it for me, personally....and yes, I'm aware of how "shallow" that sounds!

If it looks good, you'll see it;
If it sounds good, you'll hear it;
If it's marketed right, you'll buy it;

Re: Is Bowie gay? new [re: twister]

"The marriage to Angie was, by Bowie's account, a strategic move to get her a green card. The marriage to Iman could, conceivably, simply be Bowie's newest image. The happily married, middle ages, heterosexual gentleman. The perfect image for Black Tie White Nose, "coincidentally'' the first album he realised with said image. "

Oh, it's pretty clear, that someone, who doesn't take interest in Bowie's personal life, is talking here.
But what I actually wanted to say was: ''But it looks like there have been much more women than those two wives in his life!"

"Or if this is all too much for you, let's just say there's no actual physical proof that Bowie's two children actually are Bowie's children.''

But, coincidentally, they look so alike to him! And that's not just people talking. And, I must repeat, it looks like twister doesn't know much about Bowie's personal life. I agree that in his marriage with Angie anything could have happened, but I seriously doubt about possibility of it in his marriage with Iman. And, by the way, it could have been viewed as an serious assault too.

But all in all it looks like someone who wants Bowie to really be gay is talking. Like maybe the person talking doesn't want the myth to be destroyed. Of course, maybe I'm wrong and it just looks like that. (Excuse me twister, if you're accidentally reading this!)

I myself don't have anything against gay people, but I just don't think that Bowie has ever been purely gay. Bisexual maybe, experimental maybe, but not gay.

Yup. I was just pointing out that there's a possibility, no matter how far-fetched, that Bowie is in fact gay. I simply disagreed with someone that believed, in black and white, that Bowie is not gay (his wives and children were cited as proof). I was just pointing out that there was (though admittedly far-fetched) always a possibility.

/Rant begins

I really don't know why people assume that if you're the fan of someone who's gay (or was gay)'s music, that you yourself have to be gay...

Sure, Bowie was a homosexual icon and everythin, but...so was Tinky Winky from the TeliTubbies (or however you spell that!) and...does that mean that all kids from about two years ago are gonna turn out gay?

I became interested in Bowie solely because of his music, and my interest in him as a person grew from there, but that doesn't mean I'm gay/have ever considered being gay/am in denial about being gay! I am totally, 100% straight, heterosexual 16 y o male...and that is something that I'm proud of!

Personally, I have no problems with the homosexual society, and I can't understand those who do, but...how somebody can class a group of people's sexuality based on musical taste confounds me entirely!

.:. I agree completely. Bowie never really openly claimed to be gay (that I know of) but he was trying to resist gender roles. He didn't specify which aspects of gender roles (ie, sexual preference) but he did ask for you to be willing to step outside the boundaries of "masculine" and "feminine" instead of conforming to a stereotype. I'm wearing a tie right now, terror, terror.

.:. Heterosexual female, BTW, always have been, and I suppose I always will be. A bit of a homophobe, I'll admit that much, it is just rather odd in my eyes. So not all Bowie fans are free-lovin' people nor are they all homosexuals, FYI. :)

1. i prefer using the search function instead of starting new threads all the time.
2. this is not about sexual orientation, this is simply one of the dumbest threads ever made.
3. my intention was to put the dwarf somewhere. it would not fit into the artist forum and not into a serious thread. so i put it into this stupid "foggot" thread - unfortunatly nobody has noticed it anyway.
4. i tend to be annoying and boring at the same time though i am not thomaswood. to dig up this post which got my favourite over the years was just a way to prove it.

Re: are bowie fans gay? new [re: -ANON-]

Yes! The poet is as Gay as Little Richard and a frolic through the tulips. My intro to Bowie was "Fame". This piece struck me as the most original work I have ever heard. It spoke to my being different than most people. It had a defience that I sought. The music seem to speak of it's own gay intent. Without saying it in words, but in its very nature. It seem to create a somehow gay mood. so I sought and found the rest of his work. Hot damn I'm gay and it should be that way.

Re: are bowie fans gay? new [re: 96dbFreak]

OK, for the record, "Fame" that is. If you view the words{last words) of this classic. Bowie explains that it hurts him to bad to be gay. hence, his present choice for a mate.
This doesn't negate the fact that he is Bi. It only speaks to his choice. Since bisexuals are the only ones on earth who has a choice. Lucky lucky lucky

Gay haters are the really scary people new [re: FredPhelps]

By Readers` Forum
Published: Friday, February 18, 2000
I think Jason George believes gay sex means anal sex (columns of Feb. 1 and 8). If so, he is misinformed. Anal sex, oral sex and masturbation are performed by same sex and opposite sex couples.
Anal sex sometimes causes injuries, even if a condom is used. But claiming that he rejected his high school friend because the human body isn’t built for homosexuality isn’t a good excuse. We aren’t built for smoking tobacco or for tackling a running back traveling at 25 miles per hour, either.
His column on sexually transmitted diseases (Wednesday) was a good one, with real facts and statistics. Even those diseases that don’t kill are best avoided. Having sex with strangers can be thrilling for an evening, but multiple trips to the doctor’s office to treat herpes certainly is not.
Personally, I don’t play football anymore (my body isn’t built for it), but I continue to watch games. My wife continues to try quitting cigarettes. Though I am a married, monogamous heterosexual, I’ve had gay friends since high school. It’s the people who hate gays who scare me.

I know people need to classify things in order to be able to function in a cultural environment. But I think the labelling needs to be self-conscious, critical and fluid in a way. And it doesn't need to stretch to everything.

I agree. I strive to be very conscious of how I process information so that I can more easily locate prejudices, evaluate them, figure out why they exist, and ultimately, destroy them or change them. Language plays a big role in the formation of prejudices and all of the associations that go along with them. It's amazing to witness a family member become a "gay family member" in everyone's eyes, following a simple revelation. After that, everything about them is seen within the context of their sexuality.

I'm bi for sure. Alot of people tell me that I'm too young to know for sure, but I mean, I've been this way all my life...I see nothing wrong with same sex relationships and never have. It's just the way I am. I'll go for a guy or I'll go for a girl, but with a guy, I'm more likely to go for another bi because it's just way more fun. You can guy/girl watch together...it's just great. It makes me love my life. If I refused to admit to myself that I'm bi, I think I'd probably be a miserable person. I see it as a great thing...it's like universal love but...not...oh well. I think it's part of what makes Bowie so great also. He's been there, done that, but he know that feeling so I would say that experimentation he did has made him an overall happier person. When you get into that, you feel like you know yourself better. It's a good way to get in touch with things that you may be trying to hide from yourself. Most Bowie fans are open minded enough to do that...it must be something in the music.

Robyn Hitchcock: Victorian Squid
From "You & Oblivion" (1995)

Victorian squid is a delight
For all the family because
It's greasy and hot
When you've had lots
Then you'll want more

There's old H.G. Wells
Lying in bed
With his new housekeeper with
Hot squid by their side
Glowing with pride
Flushed with exhaustion

Victorian lungs
Victorian skin
Victorian tongues
Victorian sin
Victorian parks
Victorian moans
Victorians darkness

Victorian squid down on the beach
Is an embarrassment to
Respectable girls
Walking with pearls
And their fiances

"Oh, Edward my love
Is that a squid?"
"Yes, I fear so, my pet
But, pray, leave it alone
Let us go home
And take some cocoa"

Victorian arms
Victorian legs
Victorian charms
Victorian eggs
Victorian boys
Victorian girls
Victorian darkness

Every night our
Voices meet in
Darkness
Clicking feet on
Hollow streets the
Fanlight falls a-
Cross the city
Onto me and
Mistress Kitty
Pray that someone
Breaches her be-
Tween the walnut
And the fur to
Where she keeps her
Real secret
Hid
She's a Victorian squid

More labeling new [re: SugarPlumFairy]

This is not the first time I've attempted to bait you with Robyn Hitchcock lyrics, SPF!

So, I went to the Atlanta Gay Pride parade the other day. One of the funnest things going on there was one of the groups marching handed out these pages of stickers with 'labels' on them for people to wear. The point, of course was not that we need these labels, but that they are kinda funny! Lets see how many of them I can remember:

Diva
Hetero
Straight
Transgender
Gender Bender
Gay
Bisexual
Leather Daddy
Nelly
Bear
Circuit Boy
Top
Bottom
Butch (I stuck that one on a passing cop! )
Fem
Questioning
Mariposa (Nobody I asked could tell me what that's suppose to mean.)
Gold Card (?)
Thom Boy
Drag King
Drag Queen

I can't remember anymore of them right now. It was also fun to go up to a guy and offer him a sticker such as Leather Daddy or Bear and they'd be all like "No way! Not me! That's not me! I'm not one of those!" But most people selected several to wear, indicating that there isn't a single word to describe an individual's inclinations.

I too would like to find one...there just aren't many around. But I vowed to myself that I would marry one, and have only Bowie songs at my wedding...plus I'm 16, no one my age listens much to Bowie, especially here in Texas. (the God foresaken land of bore...) Hi folks!

I'm bi. Is it coincidental that I'm coming out now I'm getting trounced in the polls? Yes it is.

Truth is I had a boyfriend, Mark, for two months until just last week. It turned out that he was only seeing me so he could get at my sister. Bastard.

I still feel cheated on.

I can't believe this thread has lasted for 5 years... Everyone has something to say on the subject, even me.

I am a male and I must say I like apricot and asparagus. I consider myself heteroflexible, because I had apricots much more often, but then it's only because I always fall in love with girls too fast, before getting a chance to meet a lovely man.

Forgive me Sir for speaking so bluntly, but those fags make me wanna puke my fucking guts out.

because it's empowering to be proud of your (homo)sexuality.

My old grandad, who use to spit into the faces of innocent passers-by, once said "Life is made up of seven chapters: Chapters' 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & finally 7."

Who am I to question the integrity of a man who fought the 2nd World War single-handedly because he only had one arm?

Sorry it took me five years. Based entirely on what was declared on this thread (and excluding what we know about Claude, Dogz, strangeDivine & others who did post but did not state a preference—not to mention a couple of the less serious anons), the definitive totals are:

Gay: 8
Bi: 23
Straight: 33
Asexual: 1
