i should look into giving blood on a regular basis. haven't done it in a long time. not sure they'd take it, though
did a lot of women die of breast cancer before medicine advanced enough to make it highly treatable? or have the incidences of breast cancer increased over the years? 'cause a lot of women get breast cancer but i'm not aware that it has ever been a big killer

I don't have any profound words of wisdom to offer you, Kerri, other than a simple good luck for Friday and all the very best for the future.

I know you love cut-and-paste and statistics, so here:
Here are some statistics from Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs:
Nearly 211,240 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2005.
Breast cancer incidence rates have been increasing since 1980, although the rate of increase slowed in the 1990s, compared to the 1980s. The American Cancer Society attributes at least part of the increase in the 1980s to wider use of mammography that can detect tumors too small to be found by physical exam. <=== That is so totally me!
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women of all ages, and the leading cause of cancer deaths in women ages 20 to 59.
An estimated 40,410 women will die of breast cancer in 2005 - one death every 13 minutes.
Overall breast cancer mortality rates declined by 2.3% per year between 1990 and 2001, with the greatest decreases among women under 50 years of age.
Relative survival rates for women after diagnosis with breast cancer are 87% at 5 years; 77% at 10 years; 63% at 15 years; and 52% at 20 years.

Well, it is the answer to the original topic of this thread: why would you want to give blood? (They give you a free Guinness).

Fuck! Shit! Piss! Bollocks! Cuntybollocks!
I didn't know the figures were so bad. I've known quite a few women with breast cancer, my mother included. Hers was detected quite late (her standard answer to life's problems being denial), and she was over 50. But I've never known anyone to actually die of it.
Are those figures for America only, or in general? Because if it's America only, we probably need to factor in the lack of access to affordable healthcare by a significant chunk of the population.
