Re: Blood new [re: Strawman]

I've tried. They don't like my blood.. Too anemic.

You know they are doing field research studies now on a synthetic blood called Poly-Heme. If it works, blood donation could become a thing of the past.

Re: Blood new [re: Strawman]

The first time I donated blood, it was GREAT! And I mean great. I had a good friend with me who was making me laugh, the cookies were great afterwards. No sickness, dizziness, or nausea. I was so happy to do it too. BUT, the second time I did it, it was just horrendous. I nearly passed out three times, I had to breath with a paper back over my face, the needle hurt like a bitch due to the roughness of the nurse, and I was dizzy, weak, and blacking out for two days afterwards. It was truly traumatizing. I get a severely gross feeling when I think of donating again, so I've told the Red Cross to take me off of their list. On the one hand, I feel bad, but on the other hand, I can't even imagine getting blood taken from me ever again, at least until my memory of the last donation goes away.

I did get my sister to go and donate though, and she enjoyed it, so she'll be donating again in my stead.

Re: Blood new [re: Strawman]

Nope. I would like to but apart from low blood pressure they refused to take my blood because they think i have a higher risk of catching whatever. which is nonsense. but as long as they tell me that nonsense they probably have enough anyway. as long as i get my share when i need it, it really doesn't matter to me anyway.

Are you bad enough?

I would willingly give blood, but alas I cannot as a teenager I had kidney failure and jaundice plus glandular fever, but I am always urging people to give blood.

Re: Blood new [re: Strawman]

I gave several times many years ago but it was such a hassle......I have small veins and the nurses have trouble getting the needle in, plus I end up with a big bruise and a sore arm for several days afterwards. I have also felt sick and dizzy a few times.

So I decided it wasn't worth it in the end, though I would have continued to donate if I didn't have any problems.

No, i'm not a donor. Not only do I not live in an area where you can't donate blood, but I faint ridiculously fast at that sort of thing (have fainted in doctor's surgeries when they've taken out splinters before!). I wouldn't mind giving blood but I'm not going to put myself through the hassle.

It's okay people, I've never donated blood either - Fuck that for a bowl of strawberries! Besides, my blood spends most of its time en route to my hampton, of which I shall be posting a photo of here later.

Be warned -- It'll be a board stretcher.

Never donated, though I did participate in a medical study once in which I had blood drawn from a catheter in my arm several times a day. Oddly enough, I still have no idea what blood type I am.

I am B-, which is rather rare and I give blood everytime I see the don du sang van in my company's parking lot. Which is about four times a year.

I must say I don't do this out of generosity, but only to laugh at my colleague Guillaume who's a big sissy and always tries to run away at the last moment under a lame excuse. Faggot.

Also I do like the big needle penetrating my arm and the thought that I would die the sweetest death if only the machine wouldn't stop after sucking the usual 400 milliliters.

I volunteered at donation drives after 9/11, and eventually got over my fear of needles enough to give blood, but I can no longer do so since I've travelled too much.

(I've spent too much time in Britain and Russia to be allowed to donate by the set standards.)

I really enjoyed volunteering, though. Maybe I should start that up again.

And ohramona, I'm really sorry about your medical results. Hope the biopsy turns out well, and there's no recurrence.

and i've never donated blood in my life. it's rare that i seek out gory activities. if someone ran along beside me and pricked my arm, i wouldn't complain, i don't have any moral opposition or phobia about it. i just, you know, never made it a priority. like recycling.

I know you love cut-and-paste and statistics, so here:

Here are some statistics from Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs:

Nearly 211,240 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2005.

Breast cancer incidence rates have been increasing since 1980, although the rate of increase slowed in the 1990s, compared to the 1980s. The American Cancer Society attributes at least part of the increase in the 1980s to wider use of mammography that can detect tumors too small to be found by physical exam. <=== That is so totally me!

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women of all ages, and the leading cause of cancer deaths in women ages 20 to 59.

An estimated 40,410 women will die of breast cancer in 2005 - one death every 13 minutes.

Overall breast cancer mortality rates declined by 2.3% per year between 1990 and 2001, with the greatest decreases among women under 50 years of age.

Relative survival rates for women after diagnosis with breast cancer are 87% at 5 years; 77% at 10 years; 63% at 15 years; and 52% at 20 years.

Fuck! Shit! Piss! Bollocks! Cuntybollocks!

I didn't know the figures were so bad. I've known quite a few women with breast cancer, my mother included. Hers was detected quite late (her standard answer to life's problems being denial), and she was over 50. But I've never known anyone to actually die of it.

Are those figures for America only, or in general? Because if it's America only, we probably need to factor in the lack of access to affordable healthcare by a significant chunk of the population.
