Well, good luck. I've read a good number of essays about it now, including just about all of John Bishop's Book of the Dark, which tends to get bandied around as being one of the best guides. And which I made perfect sense of when I read it. So I thought that becoming moderately acquainted with Irish geography, word etymology, dream theory & Freud (who, incidentally, I also read snippets of in preparation), dream science, Vico, etc. would give me a chance of wading through it without going mad, or, at any rate, being able to decipher more than a modicum of what was going on or the occasional half-assed pun. Not a fucking chance! I lasted about 10 pages.
Which, incidentally, is considerably longer than I last attempting to decode JamieDim's posts. They have a 10 word barrier attached to them.

Thanks for the warning. Currently I'm in the middle of acquiring necessary source material to decipher the book but I have a nagging feeling that the beast will beat the living shit out of me in the end (so to speak).
It's also worth mentioning that one of the most notorious Finnish drunkard poets, Pentti Saarikoski translated Ulysses back in the day. There's a mystical connection somewhere in there that guided me towards translation studies...

I think what you were trying to say was: "I nearly choked on my own drool while staring idle at the monitor".

In reply to:
It's also russian for 'revolution', you twat
No it's not. While we're at it, "paka" is not Russian for "good bye," either. If anything, it sounds like some sort of vulgar body function. And "da svidaniya," if that's how you insist on spelling it, makes no sense.
Also, am I supposed to infer from this "Na pomashch! Ya bal'na,mne nuzhin vrach" that you are female?

Bluff you? "Revolyutziya" or "revol't" is Russian for Revolution.
"Revol" means nothing whatsoever.
"Poka" is "bye," "paka" means nothing.
"Ya bal'na" is conjugated in the feminine, so it means that whoever is the speaker is both sick, and a woman. You might want to remember that the Russian language has gendered conjugation in the future (words are conjugated differently depending on the speaker's sex).
"Do svidaniya" is till we meet again/good bye, "da svindaniya" literally means "yes meeting." Alternately, it can be translated as "yes a date," but I'm sorry, I don't feel that way about you.
