We have a word for this in Swedish: Fulsnygg (sorry Dogz, don't know if it's been declared official ): ful=ugly, same word as the English foul, and snygg=pretty (sorry, don't know the etymological roots of that one). Anyway, it describes someone that is revolting yet strangely attractive. And I figured the notion could be extended to music. Like..
Music Kate Bush - Babooshka Pizzicato Five - that hit they had in -94 Tom Waits - entire back catalogue
People Uma Thurman the blonde chick in the "L" Word Daddy with the -77 moustache
What's your list?
or David Bowie.

I really don't understand how it works with music, but I think I'll put Nick Cave for both.
Also Benicio Del Toro for the "People" category.
...y'know, they kind of look alike.

i love that song. it's the kind of song you play over and over again to work yourself into a dancing frenzy. or at least, i would do that.
Everybody understands Mickey Mouse. Few understand Herman Hesse. Hardly anyone understands Albert Einstein. And nobody understands Emperor Norton.

And to pull Nick Cave into the song side of this ('cause I agree w/Starlite about his looks, same goes for Kate Bush) I'd like to add Nick and Shane singing "What a Wonderful World." It's a surefire uggie/purty fit.
Pretty much anything by Diamanda Galas fits that bill too.
It is my opinion and I am unanimous in this, because it is my opinion, which is, in fact, mine.

Marilyn Manson. Not musically, but physically, he's a naturally fairly ugly person who made himself beautiful without exactly changing any of the things that made him ugly.
