Wanted to buy: All Bowie RCA CDs
|
|
|
Hi. I'd like to buy the entire David Bowie RCA CD series. They must be sealed, brand new, and unopened. I'm willing to pay up to $20 each for these, including the compilations.
I guess I'm just an old sentimentalist. I like to buy old-fashioned, obsolete things just for the memories.

Is there a reason why you didn't post this in the Pervert's forum?

And your next joke is?
These RCA cds fetch big sums of money used ( I've bought a few ) as for wanting them sealed and prepared to pay as much as $20.00 each You really should take a look on eBay sometime.
You'd best be prepared to offer three times that much and still you'd be disappointed.
I paid £40.00 for a new sealed Japanese RCA mint condition Young Americans with the wording in Japanese down the spine.
Good luck

No way that you're getting them 100% mint for $20 each, mate. You've got to prepare for approx. $100 for one CD if you want them unopened, sealed and brand new. They were pressed in 1984, ffs!

Because to me it's a very special Bowie album, the first one I bought with my own money, It holds very many dear memories, It's also my favourite ever Bowie album, It gives me immense pleasure to own this RCA cd album.
As individuals we all place importance on different things, what may be of little interest to one, Is someone elses treasure.

I'm 94% with you up to here (deduct 6% because I think YA was probably the 6th or 7th or so Bowie CD I bought), what I'm missing is this part:
In reply to:

Why does this particularly expensive version of the album give you immense pleasure? Is the Japanese text along the spine particularly pretty looking? Is it just the pleasure of owning a CD that cost you $60*? Does this particular CD sound 5.5x better than the other available versions?
I don't mean to pick on you here, Dogz.** I'm not wholly unsympathetic to the collector's urge; given the choice between a regular edition and a deluxe version with a bonus disc full of outtakes I will surely never listen to, I'm still likely to buy the deluxe. I've even recently considered spending $30 on an out-of-print CD I used to have on cassette. But unless you're a total audiophile asshole (which I don't think you are), and unless the Japanese version sounds at least twice as good on your audiophile asshole equipment (which it may, but I'm not about to pay $60*** to find out), it just doesn't make sense to me.

You know I cannot actually give you a logical reason Marquis, there is no logical reason, other than that it holds many private memories of early unrequited love, yes the spine in Japanese is very pretty as is the inside text.
I think more than any other reason for treasuring this Japanese version more is the fact that it's different, simply that, with the added mystery of far away places.
All I know is I was very pleased to have won my bid on eBay for such a wonderful album, I have never played the CD, It is on display in my study.

Now I think I might have mentioned this before, but for me, if I was getting something just for display, i would get the vinyl. I would much prefer a 12"x12" picture on my wall than a reduced 5"x5" facsimile of the artwork, size which does nothing to show the greatness of the artwork. You say this album holds particular memories for you, well those memories would have been with the vinyl album, so again, getting a copy of that would be better. Fancy the Japanese writing? Get the original Japanese vinly edition with obi.
I did at one point contemplate getting the RCA editions of TMWSTW and STS because they had the alternate artwork for the albums, but, I have them on album, so I have better quality copies of the artwork already.

Just thought I'd let you know Marquis, I was playing around with my computer this week and discovered for the first time ever that "alt 3" will give you a pound symbol £ (don't use the quotation marks!)
alt Y will give you a yen ¥
(well it does on a mac anyway, try it). Just for future reference ©

I agree the 12" picture cover is much better and I do still have that original 12" vinyl album with the cloth like material covering, It's in a box along with a few items I simply couldn't bear to part with.

More the sound than the item, but yes I'd love the 12" vinyl album with OBI.
I'm sure we could as members query each others Bowie collection items, It's the same old answer everytime isn't it? what one collector would consider mediocre, another would rave at owning.

I do know you'd secretly love the original S2S B/W cd cover album and another factor being is the warm sound from these RCA cds.

I have no facility to hear vinyl, so the RCA cds are exact in sound as the 12" vinyl?

I'll keep my eyes scanned for a cheap copy if I see one going, there is something special about the RCA S2S cd, the picture cover whether big or small, works wonderfully.

Can you compare the sound of the RCAs with the 1999s? I'd like to hear your opinion.
I have one RCA Bowie CD: Golden Years. In my opinion, Bowie's voice sounds warm here, like it never will again. It's like a soft, fluffy pillow. There is good rich bass, too.
The 1989 Tin Machine gets my vote for sound quality also. You can crank these things up and enjoy. The Rykos sound pretty warm but lack bass.
I think Bowie was too cheap to hire the great engineers like Vic Anseni, Steve Hoffman, or Bob Ludwig to remaster his albums. Lou Reed, The Clash, and The Stones hired these greats. Bowie got what he paid for and his catalogue stinks.
Edited to add that Bruce Springsteen also used Bob Ludwig to master The Essential Bruce Springsteen 3 CD set. Listen to that sometime for a great job.

I haven't got any of the RCA CD's and I think you are being overly harsh on the sound quality of the latter ones. Have you taken the taste test?

I meant your RCA vinyl. No, I haven't taken the taste test but I've extensively compared Ryko with Virgin.

The Bowie RCA albums I own...
1/ Young Americans 2/ CHANGESONEBOWIE 3/ CHANGESTWOBOWIE 4/ STATIONTOSTATION 5/ Fame and Fashion
All sound better than the 24bit remastering CDs, the only way to describe it! Is as you say, warm/rich sounding tones, no modern day harshness, I hope in time I shall eventually own all the RCA CDs.
I think you'll find russellmael has the same opinion.

"I find the Ziggy Stardust record very thin. I don't like the sound on that, it's much thinner than I always thought it was. It sounded really powerful then; maybe systems have got better, it sounds kind of weedy..." - Bowie (1991

Yeah. You know what he also said? That he hates listening to himself.
Personally, I don't believe in any of this "X sounds better than Y" crap as long as we're talking about genuine, original Audio CDs.
But that's just me. I've never been even able to hear a difference between 192 and 128kbps mp3s.

depends on the music. but if your system is not completly crappy, this difference should be hearable, especially if you have "noisy" instruments. it sounds like medium compressed jpg looks, it's clearly less on 192kbps.

Well done, Tony. Don't let the naysayers keep you from spending money on my albums - no matter how much. I doubt that I benefitted from your purchase in any direct way but it's still gratifying to know that there are real fans out there like yourself.
Have you tried BowieNet yet? I think you would appreciate it and fit in nicely there as well. We are thinking of having a Gay, Shirtless Holiday Picture contest and I hear that you are a real shoe-in for that kind of stuff.
Keep up the good work, my friend. Don't forget that the 30th anniversary of when I moved my bowels to the second side of Pin Ups is coming up. I should have something very special in stores to mark the occasion.

I'm rather overwhelmed that you are addressing lil ole me Daddy
But in answer to your questions... Yes I shall continue to buy your old RCA cds, I am a fiercely loyal sycophantic member of your magnificent Bowienet site, I take mattins there everyday.
I shall buy all your reissues of course, I am looking for to all the anniversary/collectors editions you let EMI put out.
I would like a few more rare tracks though please.
BTW, hows the new secret album coming along, mums the word.
