Günter Grass Says Danish Cartoons Recall Nazi Era new [re: to_dizzy]

The Nobel Prize-winning German author Günter Grass likened the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad published by a Danish newspaper to Nazi caricatures of Jews, Agence France-Presse reported yesterday.

In an interview published in Portugal in the weekly news magazine Visão, Mr. Grass, whose novels include "The Tin Drum" and "Cat and Mouse," said: "I recommend that everyone have a look at the drawings: they remind one of those published in a famous German newspaper during the time of the Nazis, Der Stürmer. It published anti-Semitic caricatures of the same style." Julius Streicher, the publisher of Der Stürmer, was found guilty of crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg war crimes trial and executed in 1946.

Mr. Grass said deliberate provocation lay behind the decision by the newspaper Jyllands-Posten to publish the cartoons, which touched off outrage and violent protests among many Muslims. He said the newspaper had been warned that the drawings would be found offensive.

Re: Günter Grass Says Danish Cartoons Recall Nazi Era new [re: Wraith2]

Günter Grass has written some very good books, like the forementioned 'Tin Drums' and 'Cat and Mouse'. Occassionally, he has said something clever in interviews. But this has been years ago. The last decade I only remember rubbish from him.

He's the Paul Weller of German Literature.

Questions about David Irving new [re: Wraith2]

Is jailing him a denial of free speech or are his words incitement to hatred? I don't know what to think about this. The following is an article from the Herald Tribune.

An Austrian court has sentenced the British historian David Irving to three years in prison for denying the Holocaust while in Austria in 1989, dismissing his argument that he had changed his views.

Irving had pleaded guilty, hoping for a suspended sentence, but the Vienna criminal court concluded Monday that he was making a pretense of acknowledging Nazi Germany's genocide against Jews in order to escape a prison term.

"The court did not consider the defendant to have genuinely changed his mind," the presiding judge, Peter Liebetreu, told the court after announcing the sentence. "The regret he showed was considered to be mere lip service to the law."

Irving, 67, said he was shocked by the sentence, and he lodged an immediate appeal. His lawyer, Elmar Kresbach, said that if Irving lost the appeal, he was likely to serve a maximum of two years in prison because of his age and status as a first-time offender.

Irving was arrested on a visit to Austria last November, when he was detained based on a warrant related to lectures and a press interview he made in 1989. Denying the Nazi genocide is a crime in Austria punishable by as many as 10 years in prison.

"I'm not a Holocaust denier. Obviously, I've changed my views," Irving told reporters on his way into the court carrying a copy of "Hitler's War," which is among dozens of books on Nazi Germany and World War II that the self- taught historian has written.

Irving acknowledged denying in 1989 that Nazi Germany had killed millions of Jews, but he said he changed his mind in 1991 after coming across the personal files of Adolf Eichmann, the chief organizer of the Holocaust, during a speaking tour in Argentina.

He argued that the case against him was a denial of his right to free speech and that historians in Austria and Germany, which has similar laws against Holocaust denial, were being told by lawmakers how to write history.

Austria is trying to show it is tough on Holocaust denial because a significant number of Nazi leaders, including Adolf Hitler, came from Austria, and Jews and other critics have accused the country of glossing over its past for decades after the war.

Kresbach had asked the court for leniency because he said Irving had moderated his views and posed no threat to a stable Austrian democracy six decades after World War II.

The prosecution, meanwhile, said Irving had continued to attend meetings of "revisionist" historians, those dismissing the Holocaust, even after he said he had changed his views about it.

Mental health was never my strong point.

Re: Questions about David Irving new [re: ladymacbeth]

This sounds like me when I heard that Hitler might have been a masochist. Before I learned this, Hitler was the most disgusting pig on the face of the planet. After I read that he might have been a masochist, I almost fell in love with him. For a moment I even thought he never took part in the attrocities. How could he, the cuttie? It was weird times but thankfully I kept my mouth shut so noone sent me to jail. Eventually I snapped out of it. I found the article that started the rumour, a psychological profile written in 1943. Psychologists consider masochism a mental disorder so fuck that. Besides the paper is entitled Analysis Of The Personality Of Adolph Hitler With Predictions Of His Future Behavior And Suggestions For Dealing With Him Now And After Germanys Surrender Hitler never surrendered, the paper never predicted that he'd kill himself. So I concluded that Hitler was most likely not a masochist and so he quickly became a disgusting pig in my eyes again.

So maybe this guy heard the theory that Hitler was a closet homosexual and fell in love with him but then he found out that he wasn't a fag afterall. It's terrible how we tend to close our eyes to things that don't match our theories sometimes.

What people have said about what was going on in Hitlers mind is only speculation and speculation of this sort is harmful, for it is driving people away from the point that it is more important to remember what he did not who he was, as well, it provides an excuse for future tyrants; furthermore, speculation of this sort is futile because you can never break inside a persons mind, for it is a domain that they have to let you into.

You see, darling...my ass does belong on your face! You just don't know it yet.

Oooh, Belle, your profundity has given me a hard-on.

""Looking for love, not sex" -- the tagline of many a troll who doesn't believe they are worthy or capable of sex in its own right, but god, the thought of carrying that sort of middling self-esteem all the way to 36 is disturbing."

It's a same sex marriage for legalities sake, just to make sure everything is divided as per normal union and to help stop us paying insurance monies for just being a male couple living together.

Another reason for me to loathe those bloody muslims with their archaic religion.
