Wire: Pink Flag- overrated or freakin' great? new

Hi. I love crisp, well-written, guitar oriented, British art rock. How about the band, Wire? Are they great or just overrated?

I like their later releases. "A Bell is a Cup When it is Struck" is quite good (1988). Their latest release is their best "Send" (May 2003) -it's hard driven rock that is wound up as tight as a tight rope! Colin Newman's solo releases are worth a listen. I would listen to "A-Z" first. The non-Wire ambient-experimental stuff (the Dome series) I have on LPs; waiting for the CD versions.

Oh, I think they're great! Their influences are greater than their record sales.

Thanks, I've never even considered their later releases. I'll check out some samples from Send.

I definitely will if I get that one. I honestly believe I will go with the classic trilogy of Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154 first, though.

I thought you were talking about the manic street preacher-basist Nicky Wire, who is actually doing solo-work now(as is James Dean Bradfield also). But i must confest, that i've never heard of a band called 'wire'.

I have all three of these albums and love 'em all for different reasons. You'll find a much more melodic Wire by 154. Back in the day Wire were huge at the college station I was at... then again we were all a bunch of music snobs. Regardless, I can always find a Wire song for most occasions.

As for Send, I added it at the radio station I was at because, hey, it's fuckin' Wire!! But that release is actually very good. I was pleasantly surprised to hear a matured Wire, but one that didn't lose its edge.

It is my opinion and I am unanimous in this, because it is my opinion, which is, in fact, mine.

Right on, Natalie. I find my self playing Send on my IPod a lot. It takes an unusually good record for me to do that.

Thanks all for the responses and replies. The thing that's perplexing me now is that this month, Wire released new remasters of these albums. I'm wondering how the new releases, without bonus tracks, compare to the 94 remasters, said to sound great.

I will let you know how the "original masters" editions, just released, sounds. I just got back from Tower Records and bought 154, Pink Flag and Chairs Missing. As I was driving over there, I was listening to Send and A Bell is a Cup and thought that this music is Punk Rock with liberal doses of Eno techniques. Eno's reissues on the Original Masters label is true to the original art work, etc..the sound is very good.
