The Show Must Go On new

I was listening to my local Alternative rock station this morning (fucking Metallica mongers, but I still listen for some god awful reason) when I heard them mention something about a movie in the works revolving around the life and times of Freddie Mercury. Apparently, there are a handful of big shot Hollywood screen monkeys vying for the role, soooo, I was just wondering who you guys think would be able to pull off Freddie Mercury... (No, I'm not asking which of those among us is capable of making a dead Gay man come by means of manual stimulation, though I know you wish that's what I meant and I'm sure there are plenty of you.)

I'm gonna say Sasha Baron Cohen, cos let's face it, he's kind of channeling Freddie with that moustache and the bright yellow slingshot.

Eddie Murphy. He has the same kind of hyperactiveness as Freddie which I think is more important than just the looks. Unfortunatly he is a bit too old. Also he failed to get into that character acting thing so far, so I doubt he would be the right one...

So much about people *not* playing Freddie Mercury.

Guy Pearce could have the acting qualities. I am not sure about his on stage performance but for th calm moments he could be right. Also Christian Bale would be able to capture the mysterious something one gets a glimpse of when Freddie is talking in interviews.

Actually, if he can act (as opposed to doing his act), I'd say Sacha Baron Cohen would be quite a good choice, looks-wise.

Sacha:

Feddie:

Freddie:

I think that's basically what you were saying, though.

What about the worst possible actor they could choose? Just for fun...

I'll say Dakota Fanning.

Highly unlikely, though... Looks like they're already priming her for a Twiggy biopic. Only Hollywood actress they could keep under 80 lbs. She's teeny tiny, too, so she really doesn't need that much yayo. Just a dab'll keep the grumblies away.

Also slightly too African to play an Indian.

I believe Freddie was Iranian, definitely Middle Eastern and most certainly not East Indian.

I'd go w/Sacha. He'd likley pull that role off very well. Question is does he like Queen. I'd think it would be hard to act a part you don't care about at all. (all monies aside, of course)

It is my opinion and I am unanimous in this, because it is my opinion, which is, in fact, mine.

Sadly, Wayland Flowers is dead. As a second choice, I'll say Alan Hawker.

Unless Doug Henning is still alive...

Re: The Show Must Go On new [re: Starlite]

Indeed - without the moustache the resemblance is even better than I imagined. He looks a lot like the Miracle/Innuendo Freddie.

Also I could imagine him delivering the two most important lines completly authentic way: "Hello - I am Kim Basinger" and "Interviews? Oh, don't be rediculous!"

But concerning the stage appearance it will be difficult to top this.

I believe Fred was born in Zanzibar.
Eddie Murphy? He's a negro, and an annoying one at that.

Freddie came from a persian family which moved from India to Sansibar when he was born.

Eddie Murphy does not look more like Freddie than any other guy with a mustache, which is why I pointed out that the behavior in that case would be much more important than the looks.

That's also because he isn't making Borat faces (and has different hair). Facial mimicry counts for a lot. I think he could really look like Freddie if he chose.

He was born in Zanzibar because his Indian father worked in the British Colonial Office there. His parents were Parsi-Zoroastrian. The Parsi were descendents of Persians who emigrated to India a millenium ago, Their religion, Zoroastrianism was Persian in origin.

Given that Freddie's parents, grandparents, great grandparents (etc, for a thousand years) would have been born in India, I think it's safe to describe Freddie as Indian.

Yet his looks are far more Persian than Indian. Maybe his family didn't mix.

All right, Wiki quoter, I stand corrected. However, he still does look much more Persian than my concept of East Indian. And yeah, I do have friends from Mumbai and Pune, who are more dark skinned than Freddie was, explaining my own skewed perceptions.

Regardless, I still think Sacha is a great pick!

Wow Stu, way to go! You totally got the better of the generally wise and informative Tin on a minor point regarding the ancestry of a long-dead homosexual pop singer!

This totally reverses all the many and spectacular failures that have comprised your life so far!

Maybe now you'll finally get something published and be able to justify your profile's laughable claim that you're a 'writer'!

Seriously Stu, it's great to see somebody treating the murky area of Freddy Mercury's ethnicity with the seriousness it deserves.

It's a celebration!

....Yeah. Regardless, very few of them look much like Freddie.

Though I'm not sure whether we're arguing ethnicity or casting now? I'm getting a little lost here. If ethnicity, according to wikipedia there have been mixed results on whether Parsis are closer to Iranians or Gujarati Indians biologically, but nevertheless, they are not pure Indian because most Parsi communities strongly shun intermarriage.

However, if we're arguing casting (which would make more sense), I really don't know of any Indian actors who have any resemblance to Freddie, even the North Indian ones.

Arjun Rampal:

John Abraham (he can't act, really, but I think he's closest in looks):

(I'm sorry, it's hard to find any decent photos of him where he's NOT half-naked.)

Hrithik Roshan (current Bollywood golden-boy):

Of course the other problem with Indian actors is that they are all built like something obscene, and I have no idea how they'd portray 70s era Freddie.

No shit, sherlock! How stupid do you think I am? However, you must agree that Freddie did not have a stereotypical look. Otherwise Apu would have a new model to be drawn from.

Thanks for noticing my infrequent, though hopefully decent, inputs here, R/R.

All I want to know is how certain folk are in "real life", say at work. If it's like the posts here I can only imagine a long life of many lost jobs, love interests...friends... pets... *snick*

Nonetheless he lived long enough in UK to be played by

Well, at least for the alternate ending the producers will want - Freddie marries a super model and spends his final years in New York, rereleasing the whole Queen cataloge over and over again and never admitting that there won't be any new albums ever...

Now that I think of it - for Queen this ending sounds not much worse than the real one involving that musical and the post-90 live performances...

Okay, seems the idea also found its fans outside of teenagewildlife.com: http://www.deadline.com/2010/09/exclusive-sacha-baron-cohen-set-to-play-queen-singer-freddie-mercury-in-gk-film/

And meanwhile Dakota Fanning does indeed resemle the Freddie of 1991.

This is insanity! I have super high hopes for Sacha as a dramatic actor. He's got the characterization chops, and he usually brings an element of truth to his roles, however ridiculous. He'll have his work cut out for him, though.

Isn't SBC significantly taller than Freddie Mercury was?

I guess if they cast extremely tall actors to play the other members of Queen, the filmmakers could get around it...
