Lou Reed: Berlin in Sydney new

Old Grumpy's going to Sydney in December/January for a stage show of his best album. Bob Ezrin and Julian Schnabel are involved. From the NME:

Lou Reed is to get ready for the stage version of his seminal 1973 album Berlin.

In December the singer will fly to Australia to help premiere the stage show.

Following the dates in December, the production is set to run seven times throught mid January 2007 in Sydney at the St.Ann's Warehouse.

The production is being directed by Berlin producer Bob Ezrin.

Reed is due to be joined on stage by Antony Hegarty from Antony & the Johnsons, singer Sharon Jones, Fernando Saunders and Rob Wasserman.

Artistic Director of St Ann's Susan Feldman said:

"I have been wanting to produce Berlin ever since a cousin of mine first handed it to me on a cassette about ten years ago.

"It's been gratifying to engage Lou and some of his closest collaborators - Bob Ezrin, Julian Schnabel, Hal Willner - in what's sure to be a labor of love and an important part of rock history. Berlin is a sad song about people on the edge, that, at its highest moments, achieves a shimmering elegance."

Berlin the stageshow will be performed on:

Sydney, St.Ann's Warehouse (December 14 -17)
Sydney, St. Ann's Warehouse (January 18-20)

Official press release from Lou's website.

Another article.

...so Lou's doing Berlin, Numan's doing Telekon - if we're talkin' best albums here, when in hell is Bowie gonna trot out Diamond Dogs?

Interesting; why would Lou want Bob Ezrin and Hal Willner on board?

And why was I under the impression that Bob Ezrin was dead?

Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head . . .

I wonder if you had Ezrin confused with Michael Kamen, who passed away last year. They were both Pink Floyd collaborators, Ezrin producing 'The Wall' and Kamen orchestrating it and also producing for 'The Final Cut'.

Most interesting since Mr. Reed is playing the Fox Theatre in Redwood (Deadwood) City, CA on Nov. 7. Most astounding since RC is about 20 miles south of San Fran, with no shows in SF. I haven't found any details on this performance yet but get a feeling it's a warm up for Oz.

It is my opinion and I am unanimous in this, because it is my opinion, which is, in fact, mine.

I went and queued up at the State Theatre this morning and was the second person in and got a ticket 2nd row, centre, for the 20th. They opened the box office 10 minutes before the tickets went on sale online at 9:00am and already the front row was unavailable. Obviously saving them for VIPs. I wonder if I'll be sitting behind anyone famous? Last time (but one) I was at the State was for Elvis Costello a couple of years ago and I was sitting near H.G. Nelson! Yeeeeees, welcome back.

When I saw Reed last year I stood in rain for an hour before the ticket agency opened its doors in order to get frontrow tickets. That's exactly what I got but afterwards some fucking wanker decided to add five extra rows of vip places between me and the stage.
Fucking nice...

Bastards. That can't happen here - there's no room at the State Theatre to do anything like that. Funnily enough it's a bit rainy here in Sydney this morning - but all Aussie city streets have awnings which mainly protect you from the sun, but are also good for keeping the rain off.

I was 3rd in the queue (the guy in front of me was waiting to get 9 tickets for some classical bollocks) and there was another guy behind me. Then this young guy comes up (John Cale shades, iPod, VU-chic clothes) and asks "Are you queuing for tickets for Leo Sayer?"

"No", we tell him, "Lou Reed."

"Oh, good"
he says.

Re: Lou Reed: Berlin in Sydney new [re: ziggfried]

Since this has been sitting here a while uncorrected, here's at least a little help:

<<Sydney, St.Ann's Warehouse (December 14 -17)>>

This is Brooklyn, not Australia. Right now, sold out.

Sydney, St. Ann's Warehouse (January 18-20)>>

I'll take your word for it, but judging from the errors above, this probably is at some place other than St. Ann's, and maybe some place other than Sydney. Wherever it is, it's not on Lou's site, nor Pollstar.

FYI, for latecomers, or those who only know about Ramona, Leon, and the Outside era, Bowie also played St. Ann's in 2002, and it's the first time he broke out Bewlay where it mattered. And there was even a real audience.

That came from a badly worded website. The concert is being organised in conjunction with St. Ann's warehouse in NY, but all of the Sydney dates (18 Jan - 20 Jan) are at the State Theatre in King Street (where I bought the ticket two days ago).

Re: Lou Reed: Berlin in Sydney new [re: ziggfried]

If anyone’s interested Thursday night’s show at St Ann’s Warehouse is available over at dime right now. I acquired it last night but haven’t had the chance to listen to it yet. However there’s a review of that very show over at Rolling Stone.

One of the guys on another board that I post at posted this on Sunday (NY time - so he must be talking about Saturday):

“Yesterday I attended a matinee show here in NYC which was added (the four night run at St Ann's Warehouse sold out a long time ago) for the express purpose of a DVD shoot. The house was packed, a few celebs were in attendance (Michel Gondry, Jim Thirlwell, Artie Bucco from the Sopranos, and oh yeah Bono - and they were merely the ones I happened to spot in passing), and the gig was astoundingly good. Lou was in true Lou form, Steve Hunter on guitar, Fernando Saunders AND Rob Wasserman both on bass, Antony and Sharon Jones on backup vox, Bob Ezrin jumping up and down like a madman - what's not to like?”

Didn't any TW’ers go to see it?

By all accounts (and I've read two so far - one personal and one in the paper) last night's festival debut performance was a thing of wonder.

In 36 hours I'll be watching the final performance. Can't wait.

My son goes to Ashfield Boys High - the school that the Young brothers attended and the school that gave Angus his school uniform.

I saw AC/DC with Bon Scott twice in the 70s. Once at Middlesbrough Town Hall (on what was, I think, their first tour) and then at Wembley Stadium supporting The Who in 79).

Have you read Highway to Hell: The Life and Times of "AC/DC" Legend Bon Scott? Great book. I even know someone who knows the author. Touched by greatness.

Re: Problem Child new [re: 96dbFreak]

I have heard of the book and I guess it has some controversy with the Young brothers not wanting to be interviewed and then not liking how they were presented by the author. I would love to read it but I have never seen it in print in the U.S. so I guess I would have to make an order.

You certainly are lucky to see him live and on their first tour even!! I had some bootlegs of some shows in London from the 'Highway to Hell' tour that are incredible. Angus was at his most fiery on that tour and they made the 'Highway to Hell' songs real gritty when played live.

I have to admit that I'm as diehard as they come when it comes to that band and I'm happy with the Brian Johnson stuff, too. Of the Scott stuff, I don't have a favorite album, since they are all great but songs like "Overdose" and "Ain't No Fun..." make me smile.

Lately, the writing duo of only the Young brothers are present on the albums, and their lyrics suck ass or don't flow right or something. At least when Johnson sings his own lyrics, the overall song seems to carry well, even though he's not as witty as Bon was with the innuendos.

This is about Lou Reed, so sorry about raping the board. Lou is cool, though. Qi Gong is a great way to enhance chi and 'Waiting for the Man' is a classic. His girlfriend is pretty talented herself.

Re: Problem Child new [re: 96dbFreak]

Just got back from the State Theatre. What a show! I was lucky enough to be in the second row of the stalls, three seats to the right of the centre aisle so Lou Reed was about 5 metres in front of me!

I could see everything and everyone of the twenty-seven people on the stage and hear every instrument and voice perfectly. The sound production was the best I have ever heard at a live concert. The look of total joy on Anthony's face throughout the show was amazing.

All of it was amazing. Half way through Lady Day I got a bit of a tear in my eye as I realised how lucky I was to be able to witness this unique and beautiful event. The whole show was stunningly good. The interpretations of the songs by Lou and his fellow musicians breathed life into a work that has been a favourite of mine for almost 35 years. I am privileged to have been there for the final performance of this wonderful show.

Yes, well, I wouldn't expect a braindead troglodyte like you to understand having an emotional response to a thing of beauty. Perhaps if Lou had been eating a Big Mac.......

But I don't see what that's got to do with tubgirl.

Oh, wait....you didn't post a link to tubgirl. Are you feeling alright?
