No, it shouldn't. "Reference" can be used as a transitive verb without a preposition. Perhaps you're thinking of "referring to" or "making a reference to".

Heathen! Modern English's "I Melt With You" is a classic, and the rest of the album After The Snow ain't bad either. I like the song "Life in the Gladhouse." I had that album on cassette.

Anyway, "I Melt With You" was made famous in the 1983 flick Valley Girl.
