80s Tunes: Crap or Craptastic?
|
|
|
Ok, here's how it goes. I name an 80s tune and I wanna know if you people think it's crappy or crappily good. Feel free to add your own. Ready? OK!

[re: anisette]

I accidentally rated Footloose as "craptastic" when I actually wanted to rate it "crap" so please, everyone, make the mental correction (-1 craptastic, +1 crap) when reviewing the results.
Why didn't John Hinkley Jr. go after Rick Astley? That's what I'd like to know.

[re: anisette]

That was fun. Actually, I ended up ranking most of the choices "Craptastic," in some cases agonizing a bit before settling. I really loved the '80s. Those were some of my formative years, after all. The only ones I rated "Crap" were "Footloose," "Hello," and "Jack and Diane."
I agonized over:
"Uptown Girl," but I went for "Craptastic" because I couldn't get the image of Homer Simpson's devotion to it out of my mind.
"U Can't Touch This." In all fairness, this would have been "crap" if I didn't adore Hammer from his appearance on "Surreal Life."
"Never Gonna Give You Up" has to be craptastic 'cause of the fact that Rick Astley is a short, skinny white man.
"Summer of '69" reminds me of good times, so I'm biased on that front.
I'm surprised I'm the first to give a positive rating to "Like a Virgin." C'mon, folks, that's a freakin' classic.

She's A Maniac (Hall & Oates)
Wrong!
"Maniac" ("She's a maniac, maniac on the floor, and she's dancing like she's never danced before") from that crap movie about the dancing welder (ETA: it's called "Flashdance") is by Michael Sembello.
"Maneater" ("Woah here she comes, watch out for her, she'll chew you up, woah here she comes, she's a maneater") is by Hall and Oates.
They're both crap, though. In fact, I think all Hall and Oates songs should be banned, 'cause they're just too bad for human consumption.

A few confusions: Which "Roxanne" is that supposed to be? The Police one is from 1978.
"Centrefold" was fom the J. Geils Band and the Kid Creole song was "Stool Pigeon". Nice song actually.
Anyway, some real gems on the list: Whitesnake, Flock Of Seagulls, Black and the pre-Hood Bryan Adams.
Absolutely terrible: Ebony & Ivory.
Most bizarre: "Hello" with Lionel Richie asking the blind girl if she was looking for him. Love that.
No memory: "I melt with you".
And I want to believe that a light's shining through somehow

Thank you for making this correction, WW, (knew we could count on you to prove someone wrong!) but how dare you call Flashdance a crap movie?!
For one, it was made in Pittsburgh, so like me, it is sooty and wonderful.
Two, there are some pretty original dance scenes in this movie - namely the famous water splashing scene, and the one with Patrick Swayze's gangly broad (of the time) who also played Penny in Dirty Dancing - when she kicks it to "Manhunt." She reminds me of Big Bird in that scene, but she does things with her body that still just blow my damn mind every time I watch it. And I like that she starts out wearing a catcher's mask.
And, you know what... I think the soundtrack rocks, in all its cheesy glory. It's one of the first CDs I ever bought, and the first vinyl I ever owned. There's a couple shitty songs on there, but how can you not appreciate "What A Feeling" in some way, or that last scene where she serves that stuffy ass panel of fuddies duddies when she breakdances!
Highlights from this soundtrack:
"Romeo" by Donna Summer "He's a Dream" by Shandi "Seduce Me Tonight" by Cycle V (that's gotta be the raunchiest saxophone riff in the history of.. well, saxophone riffs.) "Gloria" by Laura Brannigan "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett & her Blackhearts (not on the soundtrack - probably couldn't afford that

"Flashdance" was awful. The hype around that film was immense and when I gave in and decided to go and watch it I was amazed how crappy it was. Hardly enough interesting scenes to fill the three minutes of the title track's video.
"What A Feeling" is still a wonderful pop song though.

Heathen! Modern English's "I Melt With You" is a classic, and the rest of the album After The Snow ain't bad either. I like the song "Life in the Gladhouse." I had that album on cassette.

Well, okay, craptastic means 'crappily good', but that could still mean a couple of things:
1) It's not as crap as 'crap', possibly in a slightly perplexing, kitsch way. It's able to bend the conventions of whatever it is it's doing so shamelessly it's not at clear what it's attempting. Ergo, it's impossible to reach a precise judgement on it.
2) It's crappier than 'crap', but eminently watchable in the same way that car accidents, bomb explosions and Dogz' posts could somehow draw people to bear witness to them.
And y'know, various grey areas and shades in between.
Sweetness, sweetness, I was only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head . . .
