For several weeks now I’ve been listening to, and keep coming back to, the new album Ten New Messages by The Rakes. I was somewhat indifferent to their debut, Capture/Release, but I absolutely love this one and keep returning to it. The guy who reviews it at Pitchfork just doesn’t seem to get it and I wonder if we’re listening to two different albums, or if he just doesn’t understand some of the references and resonances that these boys have.
Another one I can’t stop listening to is the new Kings Of Leon album, Because Of The Times. These guys just keep getting better and better and better. Each album contains music that is deceptively simple, but repeated listens reveal subtle nuances that make each of them classics. The new one is the best yet.
It’s only just come out but I’ve been listening to an advance copy of The Bees’ (bizarrely called “A Band Of Bees” in the US) new album Octopus for months. It’s wonderful. As is the new silverchair album, Young Modern. Meanwhile Fountain Of Wayne’s Traffic And Weather is just about the best pop record I’ve heard in a long time.
Finally the excitement of The Fall’s latest album, Reformation: Post TLC a couple of months back has been superseded recently by the arrival of Mark E. Smith’s collaboration with Mouse On Mars under the name Von Südenfed and their album Tromatic Reflexxions which is just stunning.
A third of the way through, 2007 is shaping up to be a classic year for music.

Jeez Stu, when are you going to start reviewing for Rolling Stone? You're as up with it as I used to be many moons ago... wish I could afford CD's these days but alas, all money is on food, wine, dog food and mortgage!
PS Marquis, thanks for the Matthew Dear recco too, heard one track - The Crush - love it.

You mean, the new Daniel Johns album right? Can you pick the track on the album in where he's aping Iggy?
Turn off the television - put on romantic vinyl

Oh yeah, Mind Reader is fairly Iggyish in parts. The first 20 seconds or so of Straight Lines reminds me of something else that I can't quite put my finger on, but I'm sure it's something Bowie. Of course most of the rest of the time he's doing The Beatles.

ok, So I'm not the only one stealing music these days? phew
Stephen "The Ghost" Walker played some of the new Panda Bear album on the Skullcave tonight. Sounds very Brian Wilson*. May take me a while to get my head round that. Does the whole album sound like that?
* oh DER... just re-read Marquis' review about the Wilson-esque sound.

More or less, but there's also the whole Jesus & Mary Chain/Africanesque/Spectorish tranciness thing going on at the same time. It's quite special.

Radiohead are at the mixing stage of their seventh, due out late this year by all accounts.

Very glad you like it Stu. Definitely makes me want to consider revisiting more Animal Collective proper.
For what it's worth, I'm fairly sure I remember reading that Lennox had moved to Lisbon before the recording of the album. I could be wrong, though.

The Bees’ (bizarrely called “A Band Of Bees” in the US)
I assume its one of those arcane copyright things, like how all of our Suede CDs say The London Suede on them.
But yeah, only listened to Octopus a couple times so far, but having only recently discovered the excellent Free the Bees I am sure I'll like it.
They let the retard in the game and he went wild.
