In reply to:

I feel that you are conflating "laughing at" with "giving a pass to," which shouldn't be the case. I could listen to Dubya flubbing his way through any number of speeches and laugh for hours - until, as Starlite rightly says, it stops being funny and starts being depressing - but why should that mean that I'm granting legitimacy to his sham Presidency?

I'm still not convinced. Say that Dubya gives a speech wherein he unveils a new plan to make emergency contraception only available in specialty clinics and to only allow abortion with a doctor's examination that proves there's a cause. You might deal with this by laughing that various absurdity of things in his speech, but I, for instance, would likely not laugh. Yet if we are following the trajectory of this thread, if I were to do up to you and go, "Dude, that's not funny!" would you tell me I had no sense of humor and just didn't understand how to deal with things? If you'd told me that laughter undermined Bush's authority, I'd be like, "no, fucker, he's still intends to deprive lots of women of reproductive choices whether we laugh at him or not, and this affects me!"

(The swearing in this post is not to be interpreted as actually aimed at you, Marquis, but more that I just really wanted to say "no, fucker" to something. After all, Wraith gets to swear in every one of his posts.)

Is it possible that there are simply different tastes as far as humor goes? Does your worldview allow for that?

In reply to:

Even though "Monkeyboy" is indeed Dan's mothership, there is a certain amount of characterization to "Monkeyboy" as a TW poster, as indeed there is to all of us. Monkeyboy has a long history of irony, of irreverence, and of saying things for the purpose of baiting the uninformed.

...there is a fine line between deciding when to simply laugh, when to intervene, and when to blow it off. But yeah, I didn't mean to imply that laughing at is the same as endorsing. It's just that sometimes it's hard to differentiate laughing at from laughing with.

So, WW, do you laugh at tubgirl every time that Monkeyboy posts a link to her, or just some of the times? Because, hey, she's really really funny, don't you think?

I think I meant to say "Buggerboy." because, like, that's really funny.

Do you have any idea how much you come off as a really bitter old shit of a human being? Seriously, it's kind of sad.

And an obsession with posting tubgirl demonstrates the workings of a healthy mind, does it? Just what did that wicked step-father do to you? I mean, why does a thirty year old man behave like a recalcitrant 12 year old?

Stu can die and be buried now new [re: 96dbFreak]

I think it's sad, too. He has (allegedly) bozoed me, so I won't get the smartass reply that I crave, but I'll go anyway. This is someone who presents himself as wise and respectable, but his words speak louder than his self-perceptions.

I've met some great people at TW, and some people who I just couldn't stand. I've argued pretty badly with some of those unstandable people, and most of them were pretty obnoxious. But they get forgotten, bridges heal over, wounds and so forth.

Stu is without a doubt the most vicious, hateful, and malevolent person that I have ever encountered at TW, or even in my entire online experience. I don't think I've ever shared a joke and exchanged pleasantries with him. I don't think I've even had a civil conversation with him. I may be a jackass and a smartass, but ask anyone: I'm a reasonable person, quite considerate and - at least some of the time - very friendly. It's not on my shoulders. Stu is a piece of crap.

I say it is and it's true

No. If you don't find something funny, that's your prerogative. I sometimes can't help, as I mentioned earlier, judging a person's sense of humor, but:

a) usually only in extreme cases such as genuine enjoyment of Norbit or denying the greatness of Arrested Development and

b) only as a judgement on that particular aspect of his or her character.

We all deal with things in our own way; again, I would never say that you or WildWind or anyone else is wrong to be offended by something, be it Monkeyboy or Strawman or a hypothetical Presidential speech.

In reply to:

If you'd told me that laughter undermined Bush's authority..

You'll have to speak to someone else about the undermining of authority. I feel like the only choices I'm being presented here are: you can laugh at something bad *if* you can successfully argue that laughing at it will subvert it's badness, or you can laugh at something bad if you have a flawed character and/or just don't care about the badness. I just don't agree with this.

The uprise of mexicans and african americans in our general area has uprisen.
I think some people feel threatened.
