I saw Rik Mayall live a few weeks ago doing a stage show of The New Statesman. That was an 80s sitcom in which he played Alan B'Stard, a right-wing yuppie Tory MP under Maggie Thatcher. In the stage show he's ditched the Tories and joined the Labour Party and is revealed as the power that brought Tony Blair to the leadership. Pretty funny stuff, mixes satire and jokes about penis-size to good effect.

In contrast, I just got acquainted with Bottom - abysmal! Talk about trying to milk more out of the "Young ones" concept.

You're right, Emily - Bottom is seriously unfunny.
When are you going to give me an apology for the Viking raids on England?

OK, that clip was actually mildly fun, but it has to be the high point of the whole series -- the episodes that I forced myself to sit through were just awful. We will have to invade you again if you don't stop making shows like Bottom. And if you don't bring back Eccleston as the Doctor.

Come on now, Tennant is pretty nice as well. I'm much more pissed about that fact McGann only had one movie as The Doctor and that was it (although there are rumours the BBC will be making a second movie featuring the 8th Doctor).

Rubbish, the only time Mayall has been funnier was the Flasheart episode of Blackadder Goes Forth. Though I've always had a soft spot for Drop Dead Fred...

i'm about to become acquainted with rik mayall's bottom too.
the first disc of the series is on its way to me in the mail. i'm planning on it being as funny as the one episode that was stuck onto the bonus disc of the young ones dvd - the one about the pheromone spray. :)

ok, but what about a hard-on for Right Said Fred, you ever had one of those?

What I have against Bottom is that it is so formulaic - "Hey, let's bring in the crew from The Young Ones and make another series just like that!"
...now Tennant is fine when you get used to him, but Eccleston has class.

I doubt it has as much to do with "the crew from the young ones" as probably has more to do with the fact that Mayall & Edmondson were long-time comedy partners, and therefore did lots of stuff together over the years.
