You put me in the magic position, darling~ new

So we all know by now of my obsessive love and adoration for Mika, that operatic British poppet popster.

But I am wondering what ye good residents of TW think of another glammy British 20-something, Patrick Wolf?

I really like his song "The Magic Position," but otherwise... eh. It's good, but I'm not too excited. Yet he's gotten incredibly positive critical reviews and tons of Bowie comparisons. Am I just not getting the full extent of his brilliance, or what? Mika thinks he's a genius.

I mean, I can appreciate that he sings about Peter Pan and pedophilia and wears hotpants, but...

You have no taste in men! new [re: K]

Eh. He's cute and all, but these are glamour shots, and he has a good eye for composition.

But in person? Mika's totally more charismatic.

Mind, I do think he's pretty. But Mika's Mika.

Beauty's Back in Season new [re: Starlite]

I've been meaning to check out The Magic Position for awhile now but haven't gotten around to it. His earlier records can be a bit melodramatic, but in a good way - "Ghost Song" from Wind in the Wires being probably the best of the lot.

Starlite, you should check out The Veils. I feel like they're right up your alley. I mean, look at the guy:

Pale and Sad and pretentious-looking? I'm kinda over that. (Plus really! Waaaay too old for me. C'mon, I want my singers to look boyish!)

I like Mika because he is bubbly and silly and down-to-earth-charming. He manages to be very good natured and sweet and yet still entertaining. The whole Byronic Mysterious Androgyny thing feels rather played out to me now. (Of course, I am going only by the cover--you haven't told me anything about the sound.)

Patrick rather bores me when he's the Darkly Eccentric Indie Songwriter--I am much more appreciative of the parts of his public image that are colorful and just plain out bizarre. Also, some of his public quirkiness rather reminds me of our good friend StrangeDivine. If Greg wanted to be a popstar, I could definitely see him dressing up in creepy little schoolboy outfits with glitter on his knees and paint in his hair and singing about mythology and pedophilia and bees.

Edit: Well, I just looked them up and it turns out the lead singer is, ironically, a year younger than me. But he looks like he's pushing 30 on the cover. What's up with that?

OMG OMG OMG new [re: Starlite]

All right, all right, if this thread isn't gonna go anywhere, I will just use it as my repository for GAYEST SWEDISH STUFF EVER. Claude should pay attention.

First off, this video by The Ark, aka, Sweden's attempt to roll all of the British glam artists ever into one sticky glittery ball. Note the classy lyrical nod to Bowie. (It's really subtle.)

The spirals! The feathers! The fake eyelashes! The dancing!

Then, another Swedish band I've just learned of: Bodies Without Organs. They're kind of what ABBA would be like if ABBA were obsessed with Gattaca.

Wheeeeeee, so awesomely awfully awesome.

Blood! White lab coats! Eurotrash electronic beats!

I don't even know anymore. What can you say about a song that actually has "feeback looper super trooper supersonic machine" as part of its lyrics?

You don't say?

Indeed, Temple of love is the only song by that band that I actually like. It was actually also in the running for Eurovision, last year. Add the stage show and it's truly awesome.

Pethaps "ever" is a strong word - but both do have frontmen that are outspokenly gay.

Sorry Emil, I don't come much to TW anymore and am a bit behind on all my gay Swede glam mentions.

Oh, how good their songs are has very little to do with their awesomeness. Though yeah, it's the most fun. I like the video for "Conquering America" a lot though, it's really quite well done. And I don't know how to feel about "Sunshine in the Rain." The bridge is really catchy, but the song itself is less so. However, bugs eating people's hands? Greatness.

Er... who? I don't know about the Ark, but Alexander Bard is bi, not gay.

Also, isn't he's like... a philosopher/economist at some university when he's not producing super-flamboyant pop bands? You crazy Swedes.

Re: BWO BWO BWO new [re: Starlite]

When you've been at TW for as long as you have, you shouldn't be very worried about getting a THBDB thrown at you, should you?

I used the term gay to include bi, which is perhaps wrong if you're worried about being precise. I could have said queer or HBT.
The Ark are all about preaching a queer gospel and the frontman Ola Salo declares himself bi, although nobody has ever seen him with anything other than female lovers.

BWO used to have some cred with me because most of their personnel come from the old "synth" scene (except the singer who wore diapers at that time) -- but their outspoken goal nowadays is to make chart music. I thought they would be an incredible live band but they weren't very special when I saw them last summer (despite all the beer I had drunk).

It's LABRYNTH, idiot!

I think that's how I use it when I say "Gay Swedish band," or at least "gay" in terms of culture rather than anything else, but when anyone applies it to a person, unless they're being really jokey, I tend to assumed they mean "actually gay."

Yeah, I wouldn't really look to them as your next great band, but their videos are pretty! And I love how they namecheck Deleuze. I think their songs should be more about philosophy. They should be just as pop and silly, but about Zizek and Chomsky such.
