Working Class Hero new

Which is your best cover version?

This is mine:

Marianne Faithfull

Looking good in that video, Claude! Well, better than usual.

Mine kinda sucked, mainly because I can't sing or play the guitar.

The Tin Machine version is not that bad.
I'm posting this mostly because this is one of the few non-to_dizzy threads on my first page right now.

It's LABRYNTH, idiot!

The Tin Machine version is my favorite. Iím still baffled as to why so few Bowie fans like this version.

Trying to navigate TW reminds me of what it was like having dial-up service.

So you don't even like Lennon's original?

More Working Class Hero new [re: Claude]

Green Day have a new version of it out - not bad but pretty much what you would expect: A straight rocker which sounds a little dated.

The original made history but apart from the act of expressing some political view covering that song seems not very fruitful to me. Maybe it is too simple in its structure and to heavily relying on the repetition of the song title to inspire a really kicking cover version. Or maby I just haven't heard it yet.

And I want to believe that a light's shining through somehow

The Manic Street Preachers included a cover of "Working Class Hero" as a hidden track at the end of their new album, Send Away The Tigers. Although seeing as how the track is listed in the liner notes, it's not especially "hidden."

Re: Working Class Hero new [re: Tristan]

I'm with you here Tristan, I think the Tin Machine version to be excellent, the total antithesis to Lennon's stark original.

Pain is hearing Bowie and Mickey Rourke trading rap lines on 'Shining Star (Making My Love)'. Yes, the actor Mickey Rourke makes an appearance on a David Bowie album credited as "rapper".

The Tin Machine version sounds kind of comical to me, really. It just sounds really big and hollow, like very typical to a lot of junk from the same period of time that I would only ever hear while waiting for a dentist.

My favorite is Marylin Manson's. It's very true to the original while still having a very distinctive voice to it, and changes in emphasis which somewhat subtly bring it up to date.

I think it's the worst track of the first Tin Machine album.

His version of "I Put A Spell on You," like everything else associated with Lost Hightway besides Balthazaar Getty, is awesome as well.

They let the retard in the game and he went wild.

Re: Mokes new [re: Marquis]

Manson's covers in general are pretty good. (Notable exception: Golden Years. I'm usually pretty forgiving about Bowie covers, out of a sense of fairness, but that was just dry.) Sweet Dreams, Tainted Love, and Down in the Park all stand out as well.

One of these days I'll have to properly defend my affinity for Marilyn Manson (whose name I totally misspelled in the last post - booze is helping me reclaim my yooth!), who I really think is the best artist to touch mainstream success since, well, David Bowie. But not tonight. Tonight I drink and sleep.

Manson's Tainted Love was a travesty. I like Gloria Jones' version, but really, that's a Soft Cell song. Marc Almond is fucking great.

I agree with that. The KKK Took My Baby Away and Suicide is Painless (the theme from M.A.S.H.) are two unlikely examples.
