Should a man buy his girl a gift for Valentine's?

Hi. Valentine's Day is coming. Should a man buy his girlfriend a gift?

The answer is no. This communicates so much: You don't need her approval. You won't buy her affection. You're not desperate to hang on to her.

Let's say your girlfriend is furious. She asks you why you didn't buy her anything. Just reply impassively, "No reason."

Let me submit something. So many girls break up with a guy after he lavishes her on Valentine's Day.

They do?

The reason I got mad at my BF last Valentines day was because were living long distance and I got him a big box of jelly bellys for Valentines day.

it made me feel selfish and stupid for getting upset-now we just figure we will "do something" special that day, for us.

No he shouldn't, but not for all those crap reasons toofuzzy offered....

Val's day should be for the unrequited lovers only. All other lovers don't need a stupid excuse like Val's day to celebrate their love. Their love should be celebrated every day.

I don't think a woman would be attracted to a man who "celebrates his love" with her.

Is that 'lavishes her' or 'ravishes her'?

Personally I probably will get my girlfriend a present. It's a great way to build up brownie points so that the next time she has to bodily drag me out of the pub and into an ambulance, she won't mind quite so much...

It's this attitude I dislike. Needing to "score points" with a girl puts her on a higher level than you. If she's on a higher level, who is she going to look up to in the relationship?

Why does either one need to "look up" to anyone in a relationship?

That and if you've ever had a man get so drunk he puked on you, (in his sleep)you would feel like he owed you something.

Although, he DID apologize profusely the next day.

Above gifts, confections and fineries, I prefer a man to serenade me while I play "hard-to-get." Here is a good example of a situation that I find highly romantic.

Why aren't any women asking if they should buy their man a gift?

I asked my bf what he wanted-he named a couple things and absolutely loved this:

After I ordered it-it was called to my attention that it only available in metallic black, not silver ....pooey.

He really likes the second one down.

At least it makes some sense that he recognizes that it's a gift for him. I think it's sickening the way some guys buy sexy underwear for christmas to their girlfriends or wives, and it's so obviously for his own pleasure... it would be nice to hear if any of you girls have a differing opinion?

Unfortunately, too many men think they have to buy a present for their girlfriend to get the girls to like them. This usually has the opposite affect. The girls feel manipulated, they lose their attraction and want out of the relationship.

My attitude is, "I'm not buying you anything, leave if you want, I don't care."

I think it's sickening that anyone would consider that a non-gift. Who doesn't want to feel sexy? I wear that stuff when I'm all by myself and I'm sure plenty of women do too.

Besides, have you seen what people who aren't models look like in lingerie? It's hard to call that a gift for the man in those cases...

Maybe it's different in Oz, but I gotta disagree. For better or worse, I think of V-day as being for establish partnerships; giving a prospective ladyfriend a bunch of flowers or some shit is sure way to get yourself filed under "creepy and way too forward."

Also, judging from the outfit, I'm gonna guess that

I think this is an American thing. Expressing your interest in a series of painstakingly indirect allusions (or, alternately, in a formal, professional manner) is likely to get you filed under "incapable of normal emotion" in most other countries.

I prefer America.

I got mine a cute little box of chocolates from the kids' section of the Valentine presents. It had Spider-man on it and it said "I'm stuck on you."

He gives me sweet presents at random times anyway, and there's a big container of Conversation Hearts (which I love) at our place that he brought home the other day. A week or two ago he bought us each one of these. I figure that got him off the hook for Valentine's Day. We also celebrated ten months together the day before, so who cares about a Hallmark holiday?

Last year for Valentine's Day I got stood up by a frat-boy asshole and drank myself to sleep. So basically anything would be more romantic than that.

I prefer to display my affection just whenever. The spontaneity makes it more genuine, I think.

I must get out of these wet clothes and into a dry martini.

This is so soon after my bday, close to his b day, and so close to our anniversary that I dunno what to get him for his bday.

I might just get him a bottle of Jack Daniels for his birthday-he'd like it...lol.

Re: Should a man buy his girl a gift for Valentine's? new [re: to_dizzy]

Images of (recent) Valentine's Day around the world ...

People across the world, including here in Jakarta, Indonesia,
are celebrating Valentine's Day, named after the
Christian patron saint for lovers.

In Thailand, a mass wedding ceremony -
involving nearly 30 couples - was staged in the capital, Bangkok.

Traditional Thai dancers performed before the ceremony.

In China, a kissing contest proved to be an instant hit
in the south-western city of Chengdu.

In the Philippines, some 100 couples exchanged their vows
at a ceremony on the western island of Palawan.
The newlyweds also planted mangrove saplings.

Even blizzards could not spoil the day for these two
women in Russia's far-eastern city of Vladivostok.
.
.
.
and predictably. . .
.

The festivities - which have gained popularity in Pakistan
- were denounced as un-Islamic by
protesters in the city of Karachi.
