The albums of your life
|
|
|
Shamelessly stolen from here but, face it, you bums are lucky to have me.
Anyway, it's simple: pick an album for each year you've been alive. If you participated in the albums of the decade threads, this'll be easier for you I guess. Also easier if you're relatively young and awesome, like myself.
Rules: No ties, no best-ofs.
Anyway:
1984: The Smiths 1985: New Order - Lowlife* 1986: The Smiths - The Queen is Dead 1987: The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God 1988: Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation 1989: New Order - Technique 1990: Janes Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual 1991: My Bloody Valentine - Loveless 1992: Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists 1993: Autechre - Incunabula 1994: Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible 1995: Radiohead - The Bends 1996: Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Murder Ballads - 1997: Radiohead - OK Computer 1998: Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea* 1999: Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin 2000: Radiohead - Kid A 2001: Ladytron - 604 2002: Ladytron - Light & Magic 2003: Belle & Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress 2004: Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus 2005: Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase 2006: Ladytron - Witching Hour 2007: LCD Soundsystem: Sound of Silver* 2008: Ladytron - Velocifero
The * denotes album of the decade.
This list kind of makes me feel embarrassingly white, with Fishscale (2006), Ready to Die (1994) and The Black Album (2003) unfortunately missing the cut. Also disappointed I couldn't fit more IDM on there, with Autechre's Incunabula and Boards of Canada's 2005 missive the only representatives (and the latter being my least favourite of the band's albums). Honourable mentions in that department go to: Telefon Tel Aviv for A Map of What is Effortless in 2004, Aphex Twin for Richard D. James in 1996 and BoC's Music Has the Right to Children from 1998.
Have fun.

1982: Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom 1983: Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones 1984: Hόsker Dό - Zen Arcade (Sorry, Morrissey & Marr ) 1985: The Smiths - Meat Is Murder 1986: The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead 1987: Pogues - If I Should Fall from the Grace with God 1988: The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues (is this controversial?) 1989: Lou Reed - New York 1990: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Good Son 1991: My Bloody Valentine - Loveless 1992: Tom Waits - Bone Machine 1993: Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) 1994: Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die 1995: Pulp - Different Class 1996: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Murder Ballads 1997: Bob Dylan - Out of Time 1998: Smashing Pumpkins - Adore (Call me crazy, but I never saw this as a subpar effort.) 1999: Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs 2000: Black Box Recorder - The Facts of Life 2001: Jay-Z - Blueprint 2002: Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 2003: John Cale - Hobosapiens 2004: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus 2005: Antony and the Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now 2006: The Knife - Silent Shout 2007: The National - Boxer 2008: Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
There. As I suspected, Nick Cave reigns supreme. The inclusion of two Tom Waits albums on the list has probably a lot to do with my girlfriend. While I've been a casual fan for some years, nowadays the exposure is more or less constant.

but that's a pretty kick arse list. The Waterboys are those Whole of the Moon guys, right? Agreed on The Smashing Pumpkins too, I bought Adore as a 13 year old and bloody loved it, though haven't listened to it for a few years now.

Happy to be born in the Year of Ziggy (Bowie's breakthrough). From 1981, albums started to mean something but this list is mostly from the point of view of today. The mid 90s is especially difficult due to fierce competitors and a personal peak in music interest:
1972 - Bowie: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
1973 - Pink Floyd: Darkside of the Moon
1974 - Bowie: Diamond Dogs
1975 - Bob Dylan: Blood on the Tracks
1976 - Bowie: Station to Station
1977 - Bowie: Low
1978 - Kate Bush: The Kick Inside
1979 - Pink Floyd: The Wall
1980 - Bowie: Scary Monsters
1981 - Psychedelic Furs: Talk, Talk, Talk
1982 - Peter Gabriel: Security
1983 - Bowie: Let's Dance
1984 - U2: The Unforgettable Fire
1985 - The Pogues: Rum, Sodomy and the Lash
1986 - Peter Gabriel: So
1987 - The Pogues: If I Should Fall From Grace With God
1988 - U2: Rattle and Hum
1989 - The Pixies: Doolittle
1990 - Nick Cave: The Good Son
1991 - Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes
1992 - Peter Gabriel: Us
1993 - U2: Zooropa
1994 - Morrissey: Vauxhal and I
1995 - Bowie: 1.Outside
1996 - Tori Amos: Boys for Pele
1997 - Radiohead: OK Computer
1998 - Billy Bragg and Wilco: Mermaid Avenue
1999 - Moby: Play
2000 - Radiohead: Kid A
2001 - Radiohead: Amnesiac
2002 - Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
2003 - Des De Moore and Russel Churney: Darkness and Disgrace
2004 - Darren Hanlon: Little Chills
2005 - Jens Lekman: Oh, You're So Silent Jens
2006 - Dappled Cities: Granddance
2007 - Wilco: Sky Blue Sky
2008 - more than likely, the next Darren Hanlon album.

In reply to:
1988: The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues (is this controversial?)
Not at all. Great album from a once brilliant band. "This Is The Sea" is Mike Scott's masterpiece but "The Fisherman's Blues" is indeed the Waterboys album that means the most to me for personal reasons. It was an integral part of a thrilling phase of my life back then.

Infidel, the fact that you're 17ish starts to make life make so much more sense to me.
Also, I'm sorry to be if one to tell you this but, you're young and you've still got time to change... anyway, you know REM? They really, really, really suck
