I admit this counts as a sign of my geekiness, but I really really like the soundtrack to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It's an amazing soundtrack, though I admit I might be biased due to the fact it's also one of my favourite movies.



Joe Hishaishi's soundtrack to Princess Mononoke is amazing. That tends to go to all of Hishaishi's work to be honest, but Mononoke is particularly flawless.



While I do not in fact own this, the soundtrack to Alex Proyas' 1998 film Dark City is pretty amazing. Or more to the point, the music from the movie (by Trevor Jones) is amazing. The soundtrack also includes "inspired by" tracks such as Gary Numan's atrociously bad "Dark" which don't work that well. But talking about the soundtrack itself this one is pretty damn good.

I listened to the samples of a few of these on Amazon. Of those I heard, the Diva soundtrack is promising, Globule. It seems to have an interesting mix of different styles, which is something that tends to be specific to soundtracks. It (vaguely) reminds me of something I wanted to include in my original post:



Betty Blue – Gabriel Yared. Which includes classical piano pieces, jazz lounge pieces, some early rock 'n' roll, and a kind of pseudo-fairground ride-cum-Magic Roundabout piece (which plays over the title credits and is catchy). No opera, though.

Mxy, I've read that Beck had a hand in Scott Pilgrim's music, and that's a good enough reason for me to check it out. I kept tolerably up-to-date with Beck's up to and including The Information, and have enjoyed his stuff. I'm slightly suspicious of the 'geek chic' surrounding the movie itself, though. And I've been pretty crap at keeping tabs on Trent Reznor.

K's Princess Mononoke sounded interesting, too, from the samples.

The Quantum of Solace soundtrack has a duet with Jack White and Alicia Keys on it. What's not to like?

Judgment night - each song a collaboration between a metal band and a hip-hop band. How nineties!

Colors: Great movie, a soundtrack containing the best hip hop had to offer at the time.

There is probably a law somewhere stipulating that you have to like the soundtrack to The harder they come. Well, it is a classic for a reason.

I stopped keeping up with both of them years ago; in Beck's case, I suspect finding out he's a scientologist had something to do with it, even though as far as I know he keeps that bullshit out of his music (unless I'm missing the subliminal references to Lord Xenu). Trent has always been cool but, you know, life goes on and sometimes having a sandwich sounds more appealing than listening to his new album.

I arrived at these albums the conventional way: watching the movies and liking the background music enough to seek more of it. I had a preconceived idea of what a Trent Reznor soundtrack might sound like when I watch The Social Network, and what I heard completely subverted my expectations. It's a very good record. I've also found that it's ideal for walking someplace in a hurry.

The Hairspray soundtrack is pretty cool, assuming you liked the music from the flick. A nice bonus is the original version of Footstompin' that Bowie butchered on Cavett. It played during the closing credits of the film.

Seconded, EJ and p2c. In fact I played some music from The Jungle book to my toddler today.
Listening to it again as a grown-up, it has some high quality jazz in it (although the vocal performance depends on what language version you have -- as with all kids movies, even the soundtrack was dubbed to your local language, you know). I doubt anyone will listen to any of the current Disney soundtracks in fifty years from now.

Fourthed, or whatever it is we're up to. I probably prefer Robin Hood a bit more as a film, but that Jungle Book soundtrack is unstoppable.

I can't speak much for recent history. I believe the last cel-animated Disney feature I saw was Lilo & Stitch, which isn't a musical, and before that The Lion King, whose songs I will be glad to never listen to again.

Which pretty much proves Emil's point -- I'd argue that you didn't necessarily need to see the actual movies to recognize, say, "Under The Sea" or "Hakuna Matata," but I'll be damned if I even know the titles of the signature songs of the last decade of Disney musicals.

The Harder They Come is a great soundtrack full of lots of variety.

Also pretty much any of the soundtracks produced by Ennio Morricone rule. I love the Harmonica theme from "Once upon a time in the west", but of course "Good, bad and the ugly" absolutely rules too. It is the classic western soundtrack!

I still really enjoy the Braveheart soundtrack, regardless of the controversy surrounding Mel Gibson. It's a damn good score.

Nevermind Mel Gibson, the entire film is hideously historically inaccurate! Now I'm by no means saying Edward I wasn't a total bastard, but he was enough of a bastard that they didn't need to change the way in which he was a bastard... if you see what I mean?

Tarantino has a music room that's supposedly the size of a record store, and he has all these rare gems he's collected from around the world which he draws on for inspiration. I think that's why his soundtracks are usually pretty boss - diverse taste in music coupled with a knack for building cool scenes around songs.

Also, maybe I'm being anal-retentive, but are we talking soundtracks and original scores, or just soundtracks, or what? In some cases the two can be completely different animals in the same film.

Big ups to Donnie Darko, soundtrack and score. Some truly wonderful scenes defined by musical choices.

The Edward Scissorhands score music is some of Elfman's greatest work, imo.

I have to say, whether or not Daddy approves, the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack was pretty on point.

Cry-Baby - Bull Moose Jackson? Say no more. Badass original songs, too.

I might catch some flack for this one, but the Clueless soundtrack is a really very nice slice of 90's life.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, mostly score, but that Korgis/Beck scene is kind of gutting.

And, I know it's a TV series, but True Blood has a pretty decent music coordinator.
