But I don't crap that much - I may need more fibre new [re: twister]

This is a very, very good point. While I'm not a big fan of *testing* pictures and signatures (especially signatures; I tend to think that's just lame), I'm inclined to defend the practice of attaching a post for inclusion as your icon only because I'm guilty of it myself.

On the other hand, I am well aware (as everyone should be) that it is much better for Evan and the site if I store my pics off-site. To be honest, I have absolutely no excuse for storing them on TW other than laziness; all the free image hosting sites I used to use have either gone to pay sites or now disallow external linking and I've just not been arsed to find an alternative host. I once asked Fat Bastard to host my picture (he used to store a few pics for TWers at his "friends of Fat Bastard" site), but I'm not cool enough to be his friend. In any case, you're absolutely right, twister, that I should quit being a lazy-ass and find another free image hoster.

It's important to note, however, that the primary problem at hand is not with the actual storing of images and data on the TW site, but with the bandwidth used when that data is called. Evan's issue in the quotation you've cited above has nothing to do with the actual storing of the images (though server space adding up may in fact be a separate issue, particularly when people change images frequently and store them all on TW). The problem at hand is in the bandwidth used when the image is requested, that is, when the http call is made to the image's URL to display the picture from its stored location. This happens every time someone who has gifs turned on loads any page on which a person who stores his or her or image on TW has a post. Image transfer is the biggest culprit in high bandwidth use.

In a nutshell, twister is right that it would be a good idea for a number of reasons to either post less crap and to store images elsewhere. It's something to keep in mind anyway. That, and remember to click on the ads.

All of that said, I do give myself a little credit for the fact that I've had all of three different pictures the entire time I've been on TW (and two of them were stored off-site, actually), and all were simple pictures reduced to the actual pixel size to be used and cut to the smallest file size possible. Okay, so it's completely impossible for me to not toot my own horn at all.

Yes, I like being arrested.

Hmmm, do you think Evan would be able to delete the the thread entire, and perserve the space?

What about your FACE?!?! new [re: twister]

In reply to:

Come on, look at this post, p2c - tell me it isn't shitty.

It isn't shitty. Look, dissing the lyrics of Matthew Sweet is not gonna get you anywhere in life, lad. As to whether it belongs in my canon - nobody takes posts to the crap threads as substantive; Hemingway's shopping lists didn't count against his canon, did they?

Now you, boy-o, have made some egregious errors yourself. First, you used the "eff word" in this very thread title. If it becomes popular, then all who visit the site will see the title in hot topics and think we are a bunch of profane nimrods in here.

Also, I asked it in my first post, I asked it in the header to this post, and I ask it here again: What about your face? Click and remind yourself that you dedicated a whole thread in Coffee Shop to uploading pictures of yourself at Evan's expense so that you could show your fans your grimacing countenance.

Since the assistant moderator created the original "crap thread" and has contributed to it on occasion, I don't see that the threads are anathema. I do agree that too many people have started them. I further agree that uploading images should be done as a last resort. We should keep each other abreast of sites that allow free image hosting without restrictions on referencing the images elsewhere.

Like Tristan my gif is referenced from another site. So that post didn't cost Evan anything.

Now go start a thread on David Bowie songs that would be hardest to play on a Scrabble board (or some such).

I strive to be brief, and I become obscure. ~Horace~

I don't have a problem with Matthew Sweet. The man's pretty good, particularly You Don't Love Me and Sick Of Myself. That doesn't mean a post containing a snippet of one of his lyrics constitutes a particularly good post.

In reply to:

If you acknowledge these posts are insubstantial, why can't they just be deleted? Problem solved. Yes, I keep coming back to that - but damn it, isn't that the point? Can you give me one good reason why the posts on the crap thread need to be kept? Once they've lived their primitive purposes, do they contribute anything by remaining here?

In reply to:

Hemingway's shopping lists didn't count against his canon, did they?

They would do if he published them. If he left them in the file of his "complete works", when they could easily be removed - which is the equivalent of what you have done.

In reply to:

I say "fuck". If that makes me a "profane nimrod" in your eyes, or anyone else's - then so be it. Though look at this, this and this. I'm sure I could find many more if I cared to. You think someone will put up with profanity so long as it isn't in a subject line? Don't be a hypocrite, p2c.

In reply to:

What about your face?

God those are horrible pictures. I kind of think I look a little better now, because my hair's at a happy medium between the 'too short' of the more recent post, and the shaggy dog look of the previous three, but alas, taking into account my huge inflate waist-wise it's still no picnic. Correction, it's more like seven picnics a day, hence the trouble. Some people claim they aren't photogenic - I make no such claim, I'm just plain ugly. Oh right, you were bitching...

In reply to:

Did I ever say "no, you shouldn't attach anything ever"? I'm pretty sure I didn't. My posts on that thread may not have been the finest this board has ever seen, but at least they were mildly amusing and set up Scary Monsters for a fun post. Your typical "crap thread" post makes no attempt whatsoever to contribute anything to the MB.

In reply to:

Since the assistant moderator created the original "crap thread" and has contributed to it on occasion, I don't see that the threads are anathema.

Adam did no such thing. If you read the early posts on his "Pictures Beside Posts" you'll see in no way was it intended to be used the same way the "crap" threads were, though it descended into the same thing after a while, through no real fault of Adam's. It is true that Adam himself tested on that thread once it became used as such, and I consider it just as detrimental when Adam does it, as I do when you or anyone else does it. You can't tell me this post is any more a worthy contribution or less worthy of deletion after viewing just because it was created by someone who would (at a later date, I might add) become the assistant moderator? Nor can you justify doing stupid things because someone you hold in high regard did them first - and for the record, I do hold both you and Adam in high regard - but if Adam were to make posts comprised entirely of the letter 't', would you feel this justified following his damn silly behaviour?

In reply to:

So that post didn't cost Evan anything.

All posts are taking up webspace. They should at least contribute something to warrant the, however fractional, bill that comes with them.

I don't appreciate your two-dimensional caricature of me as some kind of eccentric list-maker, but I'm well aware you merely needed a tried and tested joke to fall back on.

I hope that I can say the things I wish I'd said.

Twister: Man of three or more dimensions new [re: twister]

twister, I don't think the crap threads are very substantial, no. But then neither are 95 of every 100 Coffee Shop threads (including the one you just posted to - Don't Sit Down, indeed).

But are the Crap Threads devoid of entertainment value? The answer depends entirely upon your perspective. I had a look at Adam's crap thread, and often, certain posts do inspire a bit of conversation. More interesting still, reading the thread is like watching people making toilet, unaware they are being watched. For instance, on Adam's thread, and I liked watching Rose_Stardust try to make her gif work. It was cute. I liked seeing Einar insist that sonofsilence stop showing an animated gif next to his posts, and then displaying a well-done animated gif of various concert performances where db played guitar.

On the issue of fuck: The word should be used like threads of saffron - sparingly. You probably noted that after those three posts of mine you had to go back quite far to find another instance of its use in one of my posts. Further, the word added humorous zing in each instance - I got a chuckle out of all three of the posts you linked to. Well done, me!

I do feel like thread titles should not drive potential posters away by sounding agressive or argumentative or just flat out ridiculous. If we want new Einars at TW then we should keep in mind what would draw one of those sorts in - and not reveal the awful truth about ourself until it is too late!

I conclude my comments on this thread with the dimensions of twister:

1st dimension - Eccentric List Maker - makes me rethink about db and music. Not a bad thing.

2nd dimension - Defender of the Boards - he will bite your head off and spit it out in Coffee Shop if you don't post right!

3rd dimension - Object of Affection - everybody loves twister - not just scary monsters and ziggywombat.

4th dimension - Oasis Defender - now this is just plain annoying.

5th dimension - Man of Discernment - recognizing brilliant literature from hoary hands in Artistes Forum. He's a quick study, too, when one considers his very interesting satiric take on Laby fic.

No more posts from me to this thread. I don't want to see the "eff word" on the main page.

I strive to be brief, and I become obscure. ~Horace~
