Cut the crap, fuckers!

We don't need these damn "crap" threads. If you want to test if your signature is working, or if your .gif is being displayed correctly - then by all means do so, but is there any reason why you can't delete your post after having done so? If you want to upload an image as an attatchment that you want to use in a post elsewhere, is it really any harder to just upload it in the post you want it on? And if you're just uploading images for your own private use elsewhere, don't you think it's a tad unfair to expect Evan to have to pay to keep your images when you can easily find your own webspace elsewhere for free?

The fact you all feel the need to "test" your signatures and .gifs says a lot about your vanity. The fact that you don't delete these "tests", and leave them on Evan's space to pay for, and leave them as "new" posts for people to enter the forum and read, only to find nothing at all of interest - says a lot about your selfishness.

I hope that I can say the things I wish I'd said.

Whenever you delete a post with an attachment the attachment gets deleted too. Judging by the amount of "crap" in this forum there's very few, if any, people who actually bother to do this.

What's your problem? For the first time ever I gave my username a gif the other day, and before just trotting it out there to accompany my spouted shit-o-gold in Coffee Shop or NVQ, I wanted to test it to see if it looked reasonable at the slightly smaller pixel parameters here. What's the big deal, you little twerp? Weren't you the one that posted a whole slew of gifs of yourself when you hadn't even washed your hair!!!!.

I think I've put you in your place. Send PMs of thanks to me, TW, I like basking in your adoration.

P2C, for your convenience I will copy and paste a short segment from my original post.

"If you want to test if your signature is working, or if your .gif is being displayed correctly - then by all means do so, but is there any reason why you can't delete your post after having done so?"

You tested your .gif. Fair enough. Doesn't mean you have to leave behind a shitty post that's taking up bandwidth, helping threads become "hot topics" (making a mockery of the whole system) and counting as "new" to coax people into viewing threads to find there's nothing of value to see - when the aforementioned shitty post can easily be deleted. Come on, look at this post, p2c - tell me it isn't shitty. Tell me it deserves to be in your overall canon of posts. You started this thread, p2c, you of all people should know better.

Does nothing exist to a blind person? new [re: Nephthys]

In reply to:

I haven't seen Evan complain at all.

Here's a quote for you from Evan himself, on the 6th of January this year:

"It also is better for my bandwidth if you store your pictures off-site and refer to them. Otherwise, every time you put up a 75KB picture for your CP profile (instead of scaling it down), the 1000 people or so who visit Conversation Piece every day will make multiple requests for your picture every time they view your posts. This can easily add up to many, many megabytes of bandwidth (which is the very thing which costs me the most amount of money for my server).

Thus I would always recommend that you get your own website and store your pictures etc on there rather than Teenage Wildlife if at all possible."

Take a look for yourself here.

But I don't crap that much - I may need more fibre new [re: twister]

This is a very, very good point. While I'm not a big fan of *testing* pictures and signatures (especially signatures; I tend to think that's just lame), I'm inclined to defend the practice of attaching a post for inclusion as your icon only because I'm guilty of it myself.

On the other hand, I am well aware (as everyone should be) that it is much better for Evan and the site if I store my pics off-site. To be honest, I have absolutely no excuse for storing them on TW other than laziness; all the free image hosting sites I used to use have either gone to pay sites or now disallow external linking and I've just not been arsed to find an alternative host. I once asked Fat Bastard to host my picture (he used to store a few pics for TWers at his "friends of Fat Bastard" site), but I'm not cool enough to be his friend. In any case, you're absolutely right, twister, that I should quit being a lazy-ass and find another free image hoster.

It's important to note, however, that the primary problem at hand is not with the actual storing of images and data on the TW site, but with the bandwidth used when that data is called. Evan's issue in the quotation you've cited above has nothing to do with the actual storing of the images (though server space adding up may in fact be a separate issue, particularly when people change images frequently and store them all on TW). The problem at hand is in the bandwidth used when the image is requested, that is, when the http call is made to the image's URL to display the picture from its stored location. This happens every time someone who has gifs turned on loads any page on which a person who stores his or her or image on TW has a post. Image transfer is the biggest culprit in high bandwidth use.

In a nutshell, twister is right that it would be a good idea for a number of reasons to either post less crap and to store images elsewhere. It's something to keep in mind anyway. That, and remember to click on the ads.

All of that said, I do give myself a little credit for the fact that I've had all of three different pictures the entire time I've been on TW (and two of them were stored off-site, actually), and all were simple pictures reduced to the actual pixel size to be used and cut to the smallest file size possible. Okay, so it's completely impossible for me to not toot my own horn at all.

What about your FACE?!?! new [re: twister]

In reply to:

Come on, look at this post, p2c - tell me it isn't shitty.

It isn't shitty. Look, dissing the lyrics of Matthew Sweet is not gonna get you anywhere in life, lad. As to whether it belongs in my canon - nobody takes posts to the crap threads as substantive; Hemingway's shopping lists didn't count against his canon, did they?

Now you, boy-o, have made some egregious errors yourself. First, you used the "eff word" in this very thread title. If it becomes popular, then all who visit the site will see the title in hot topics and think we are a bunch of profane nimrods in here.

Also, I asked it in my first post, I asked it in the header to this post, and I ask it here again: What about your face? Click and remind yourself that you dedicated a whole thread in Coffee Shop to uploading pictures of yourself at Evan's expense so that you could show your fans your grimacing countenance.

Since the assistant moderator created the original "crap thread" and has contributed to it on occasion, I don't see that the threads are anathema. I do agree that too many people have started them. I further agree that uploading images should be done as a last resort. We should keep each other abreast of sites that allow free image hosting without restrictions on referencing the images elsewhere.

Like Tristan my gif is referenced from another site. So that post didn't cost Evan anything.

I don't have a problem with Matthew Sweet. The man's pretty good, particularly You Don't Love Me and Sick Of Myself. That doesn't mean a post containing a snippet of one of his lyrics constitutes a particularly good post.

In reply to:

nobody takes posts to the crap threads as substantive

If you acknowledge these posts are insubstantial, why can't they just be deleted? Problem solved. Yes, I keep coming back to that - but damn it, isn't that the point? Can you give me one good reason why the posts on the crap thread need to be kept? Once they've lived their primitive purposes, do they contribute anything by remaining here?

In reply to:

Hemingway's shopping lists didn't count against his canon, did they?

They would do if he published them. If he left them in the file of his "complete works", when they could easily be removed - which is the equivalent of what you have done.

In reply to:

First, you used the "eff word" in this very thread title. If it becomes popular, then all who visit the site will see the title in hot topics and think we are a bunch of profane nimrods in here.

I say "fuck". If that makes me a "profane nimrod" in your eyes, or anyone else's - then so be it. Though look at this, this and this. I'm sure I could find many more if I cared to. You think someone will put up with profanity so long as it isn't in a subject line? Don't be a hypocrite, p2c.

In reply to:

What about your face?

God those are horrible pictures. I kind of think I look a little better now, because my hair's at a happy medium between the 'too short' of the more recent post, and the shaggy dog look of the previous three, but alas, taking into account my huge inflate waist-wise it's still no picnic. Correction, it's more like seven picnics a day, hence the trouble. Some people claim they aren't photogenic - I make no such claim, I'm just plain ugly. Oh right, you were bitching...

In reply to:

Click and remind yourself that you dedicated a whole thread in Coffee Shop to uploading pictures of yourself at Evan's expense so that you could show your fans your grimacing countenance.

Did I ever say "no, you shouldn't attach anything ever"? I'm pretty sure I didn't. My posts on that thread may not have been the finest this board has ever seen, but at least they were mildly amusing and set up Scary Monsters for a fun post. Your typical "crap thread" post makes no attempt whatsoever to contribute anything to the MB.

In reply to:

Since the assistant moderator created the original "crap thread" and has contributed to it on occasion, I don't see that the threads are anathema.

Adam did no such thing. If you read the early posts on his "Pictures Beside Posts" you'll see in no way was it intended to be used the same way the "crap" threads were, though it descended into the same thing after a while, through no real fault of Adam's. It is true that Adam himself tested on that thread once it became used as such, and I consider it just as detrimental when Adam does it, as I do when you or anyone else does it. You can't tell me this post is any more a worthy contribution or less worthy of deletion after viewing just because it was created by someone who would (at a later date, I might add) become the assistant moderator? Nor can you justify doing stupid things because someone you hold in high regard did them first - and for the record, I do hold both you and Adam in high regard - but if Adam were to make posts comprised entirely of the letter 't', would you feel this justified following his damn silly behaviour?

In reply to:

So that post didn't cost Evan anything.

All posts are taking up webspace. They should at least contribute something to warrant the, however fractional, bill that comes with them.

Now go start a thread on David Bowie songs that would be hardest to play on a Scrabble board (or some such).

Twister: Man of three or more dimensions new [re: twister]

twister, I don't think the crap threads are very substantial, no. But then neither are 95 of every 100 Coffee Shop threads (including the one you just posted to - Don't Sit Down, indeed).

But are the Crap Threads devoid of entertainment value? The answer depends entirely upon your perspective. I had a look at Adam's crap thread, and often, certain posts do inspire a bit of conversation. More interesting still, reading the thread is like watching people making toilet, unaware they are being watched. For instance, on Adam's thread, and I liked watching Rose_Stardust try to make her gif work. It was cute. I liked seeing Einar insist that sonofsilence stop showing an animated gif next to his posts, and then displaying a well-done animated gif of various concert performances where db played guitar.

On the issue of fuck: The word should be used like threads of saffron - sparingly. You probably noted that after those three posts of mine you had to go back quite far to find another instance of its use in one of my posts. Further, the word added humorous zing in each instance - I got a chuckle out of all three of the posts you linked to. Well done, me!

I do feel like thread titles should not drive potential posters away by sounding agressive or argumentative or just flat out ridiculous. If we want new Einars at TW then we should keep in mind what would draw one of those sorts in - and not reveal the awful truth about ourself until it is too late!

I conclude my comments on this thread with the dimensions of twister:

1st dimension - Eccentric List Maker - makes me rethink about db and music. Not a bad thing.

2nd dimension - Defender of the Boards - he will bite your head off and spit it out in Coffee Shop if you don't post right!

3rd dimension - Object of Affection - everybody loves twister - not just scary monsters and ziggywombat.

4th dimension - Oasis Defender - now this is just plain annoying.

5th dimension - Man of Discernment - recognizing brilliant literature from hoary hands in Artistes Forum. He's a quick study, too, when one considers his very interesting satiric take on Laby fic.

No more posts from me to this thread. I don't want to see the "eff word" on the main page.

Oh yeah, and while I'm here. (and please excuse any redundancy in these arguments, I just couldn't be bothered reading any of this) Isn't all the space taken up by these crap threads about .002% of the total space taken up by all the other posts here? I mean plenty have attachments, and most others have a great deal more text, and there are around 130,000 compared to around 500 crap posts. So why the hell spend so much energy getting so damn worked up over .002%?

Wouldn't it be much better if we deleted all of our posts straight after we made them? Then we could save ALL the space. Better yet, to save space and still keep our posts we could post them on another site!

I was once on the straight and narrow. But now that I see it really gets some people over-reacting I just can't help myself anymore. I think it teaches people like that to accept the ole samsara for what it is. So really I'm saving your soul by posting these gifs repeatedly, hell, I'd be irresponsible not to do it.

Seems like a good idea.

Yeah...I don't think I will.

You know, Dave, if you really want to make an impact around here you might want to try contributing something other than condescending bullshit such as the crap that you've been posting lately. Nothing personal, honest, but there's nothing like an asshole who walks around the party talking about how much it sucks - even if it does.

The worst problem with some of you is that your rubbish is only accepted here alone. I've seen other sites roast the crap out of some of you in the past.

I'd like to see this site become a good site again. That is why I pop back every now and then to see what is going on. But it seems to be the same old stuff where the coffee shop is full of rubbish and the ones who have spent far too much time here pay out insults on other people for the hell of it.

All i suggested was if Evan is having problems with the site and costing then he should maybe spend more time here otherwise he doesn't really have a leg to stand on does he?

Just the same as I'd say to any former posters who visit the site every so often in the hope that it's up to their high standards - how about contributing to the message board on a consistant basis? I believe TW could be "great" once again if a few former & good users posted reguarly.

Unfortunately, I would imagine that the numbers of former good users that visit are few & obviously rarely post at all - it's the former poor posters that feel the need to express how shite the place has become:-

That is what alot on non TW people don't get about this site. The Bowie content on the boards is super at times but the blatent rude attitude of alot of the coffee shop posters leaves many scratching their heads.

Instead of trying to respon in a decent manner most of the time people here who live on TW respond with insults, foul language and the same drivel they have been using for god knows how long.

Sometimes it is funny how I keep seeing the same insults directed towards the same members. It only reinforces the fact that the minds of most rude ppl here are very small and childish. The same ppl take pride in the fact they can create 3 or 4 differant accounts to use as a tool to try and make the site better. The same ppl again spend many hours tracing posts going back a fair way to try and find ways of insulting members. These same members have tried hard to pull the same crap on other Bowie sites and fallen down before they even started.

The only way this site will ever get back to the days of the late 90's is by Evan taking control back and keeping the site updated. Everything about this site is old and run down. I would love to see TW become an updated and informative site again. If he doesn't care about it then why not let say Adam take over thenews section and make regular updates to the other areas?

Monkeyboy and Strawman should go and buy a joke book because their worn out repeated attempts to insult members has become a yawn. Otherwise they could become nice ppl and maybe more older members might just come back.

Then again that would be bad for them because all the attention would no longer be soley focused on them. It must be hard when you need to use a run down message board on TW to generate a fan base and attention.

Okay, but suppose this doesn't happen. What then, Dave? Wouldn't that mean all your complaints are essentially menaingless? Maybe if we are, as you suggest, in such dire need of help we should actually take matters into our own hands instead of relying on an absent webmaster you've built up into some sort of messiah figure.

Assuming anyone actually cares, of course. Which I suppose is where your inspiring words of wisdomn come into play, right?

By the way, using the term "ppl" in the same sentence that dismisses them as "childish" really doesn't help your case any. Just so you know.

Is that...wait a minute...an insult, Dave? But you're doing it for a good cause - your own. So I'm sure it doesn't count. Try actually being the better person before announcing that you are.

I doubt this is actually true. I suspect - and, really, I could be wrong - that what you witnessed was more along the lines of a wannabe trying to set up shop as "the Monkeyboy of BWW" or whatever.

In reply to:

Alright, we can see eye to pigly eye on this one. Assuming that TW is actually old and run down, I do think that the best way to revive it is to bring back heavy updating. This would be greatly helped if Daddy were doing things to regularly update about. What gets me here is how you start off talking about how mean people with potty mouths are the problem while bringing this in as the solution.

And then you go into this crap again:

In reply to:

Monkeyboy and Strawman should go and buy a joke book because their worn out repeated attempts to insult members has become a yawn. Otherwise they could become nice ppl and maybe more older members might just come back.

First off, are you implying that joke books are actually good? Well, I've said time and time again that my humor is a) not for everyone and b) best with new people to get offended by it. You might think that you've really kicked me in the balls with your criticizm but if you don't think I'm amusing that's fine, you aren't my target audience - I am. Personally, I think I'm fucking hilarious. Thank you, though, for implying that both myself and Strawman have the power to influence TW's membership so heavily with what we say. I disagree, but we clearly are quite important in your eyes so thank you.

In reply to:

Then again that would be bad for them because all the attention would no longer be soley focused on them. It must be hard when you need to use a run down message board on TW to generate a fan base and attention.

If it makes your pathetic existence happier to think that I'm so much of a loser, go right ahead. Just don't look at the fact that you are a hanger-on to a site that you think is dead in the water. That might be sad.

But all wackiness aside, I really hope that you understand our counter criticizm: assuming that TW is sucking these days perhaps the most effective way to bring about a change is to contribute good stuff rather than simply bitch and moan. Waiting for other people to make this the site you want it to be won't work. Like Gandhi said: be the change you want to see.

Me, I approach this site with my own agenda and my own perspective - everyone does. This is an interactive experience where everyone adds what they want to add - for better or for worse. Create your own little corner of TW and hope that people notice. Try adding a little bit of the content and/or discussion that you think we should be having or simply shut the fuck up. I'm not saying that any of the problems you've addressed don't exist - it's your opinion so whatever. I'm simply saying that if you don't like certain aspects of the site try countering it with your own rays of sunshine. Then, and only then, we might visit your stupid fucking Bowie bootleg site.

And since you seem to have your finger on the pulse of the Bowie Fan Community, send them the same message. Certainly a wave of "decent" posters will drown out the crap that seems to be bothering them. And I appreciate your concern but I can handle it if it should happen.

EFFEE MUST DIE!

Where Angels Fear To Tread new [re: Diamond_Dave]

Hi Dave,

to some extend I can agree to your complaints about the coffee shop but you are wrong in arguing that it effects the Bowie talk and subsequently ruining this site as such. It doesn't. While I had to learn to live with too much crap in the coffee shop I can still happily and unharmed enjoy the Bowie related stuff here. Even the most nagging posters keep away from extreme foolishness in the Bowie section (well, DD74 aside). And as both sections run completely seperate from each other and as nobody is forced to visit the coffee shop there is still enough room for fun here.

And I want to believe that a light's shining through somehow

Re: Ready, Dave? Here we go... new [re: Monkeyboy]

Here you go FATSO!!!

A blonde goes for a job interview in an office. The interviewer starts with the basics. "So, Miss, can you tell us your age, please?"

The blonde counts carefully on her fingers for half a minute before replying. "Um ... 22."

The interviewer tries another straightforward one to break the ice. "And can you tell us your height, please?"

The young lady stands up and produces a measuring tape from her handbag. She then traps one end under her foot and extends the tape to the top of her head. She checks the measurement and announces, "Five foot two!"

This isn't looking good so the interviewer goes for the real basics; something the she won't have to count, measure, or lookup. "Just to confirm for our records, your name please?"

The blonde bobs her head from side to side for about fifteen seconds, mouthing something silently to herself, before replying, "Mandy!"

The interviewer is completely baffled at this stage, so he asks, "What were you doing when I asked you your name?"

"Oh, that!" replies the blonde," I was just running through that song, 'Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you...'."

I'm totally sane, It's your sick obsession with my dog that worries me , Yes I do find it cruel/hurtful you feel the need to get at me by insulting my Effee.

That and the fact that Bowie needs to record a new album fast.

Now the savage days are gone new [re: diamondogz74]

Arguments are pretty much the norm across all the Bowie sites as far as I can see. It is due to the inactivity of Bowie. About 6 months ago, I was complaining about this place, but you get out what you put in and someone only complaining about the place without contributing anything themselves is a bit hypocritical. When I was complaining I was still posting other things besides. My main bugbear was people just posting the same old things over and over. This has changed now, and I think there is a bit more diversity in threads.

It would be lovely to have the main site spruced up and updated, but it can only be updated to a certain point, nothing is going to change that much until there is new product and not another reissue either, I mean a NEW album. That would bring more people here.

As it is, I don't think there is much to complain about these days.
