Deleting users new [re: nigelp]

I've re-thought the idea of deleting users and decided that it isn't a good one. In fact, it's necessary to keep a database of old users because they need to be identified when viewing their posts on old threads. Remember that the thread deletion was based on the date of the last post; that means that a two-year-old thread with posts by people who are long gone could still be very much active.

If a user were deleted, then when one of their posts comes up, the system would throw an error when it tried to find that user in the database. Of course a catch could be built in for missing users, but then deleted users would show up as something like "unknown," and how annoying would that be?

The one thing that could be done is to cross-reference the remaining posts with the registered users, and delete those who in fact don't exist on any active posts. But I think that deleting users based on their last date of activity and certainly deleting the entire user list would end up causing more problems than it would solve.

I never knew it was as complicated as that - shows how little I know.

In that case then, my idea is no good.

Re: Deleting users new [re: WildWind]

WW, are you saying that, say Dara's, past posting could all be deleted if he is finally considered a inactive member of TW?

That would suck.

I was under the impression that most of the space was taken up by the pictures and attachments. yah or neh?

Interpretation new [re: bowiefanpeter]

In reply to:

bowiefanpeter:
Put the entire iterpretation forum back up onto the TW site. These contents are not date sensitive and will be brought back/searched in the future. To a lesser extent this also applies to the NQV forum.

Another point is that Interpretation is relatively very small compared to the other fora. For this reason, it would make sense to have the contents in one place rather than divided between 2 different severs and 2 different searchable databases.

In reply to:

twister:
I think perhaps the PM system needs to be abolished.

I think a better option is to have the PMs expire after a time period (such as 30 days), and the option to "export" to an email address. These are script add ons for the software. But Evan would need time to implement this.

In reply to:

WW and Adam, I did get your message and yes, I do plan to add the necessary code to enable your suggestion. But as with all of these things, it's only going to happen when I find spare time and feel the inclination to put in the two days or so worth of effort to get it working.

Thank you, Evan.

In reply to:

Yes !

Even more dangerous is that, now I have lost my 'Clinton files' (don't know why I called it that), I cannot blackmail certain female users anymore !

Ah well, I still have pictures...

Users or pictures? new [re: bowiefanpeter]

In reply to:

WW, are you saying that, say Dara's, past posting could all be deleted if he is finally considered a inactive member of TW?

If he doesn't post and threads on which he has in the past don't remain active, all his past posting will be deleted anyway. The database will certainly continue to grow, and we're already too big even with the deletion, so I think we can assume that more post/thread deletions are inevitable in the future.

As far as wiping out his user name, I agree that this is a pretty scary prospect, but from a practical standpoint it makes sense - Dara will always be in the memories of those that remember him, and he probably doesn't matter much to those that don't. If he doesn't return, how important is it to keep his user name?

The danger is, as nigelp pointed out, some clown nicking that famous username (and others that will be deleted).

I don't think that deleting users is the greatest thing to do, and it certainly isn't the magic solution to our problems, it was just a suggestion to add to the brainstorm.

I'm sure that's the case, and I think a good place to start is to address the attachment-heavy areas such as crap threads and Artiste. As the ever-wise nigelp again pointed out, we should encourage linking rather than attaching.

I agree with you, BTW, that it would be great to get the Interpretation forum restored.

I don't think this would happen because the CP usernames are controlled by a separate database - the TW Fan Registry. You cannot, for instance, register the name Abbeyjo at Conversation Piece, because the name is already reserved by the TW Fan Registry (even though she does not post here).

Re: The Archives new [re: Ruskie]

Although I wasn't around in July to receive any PM's, I am semi-thrilled that the posts are gone.

I don't know, makes things feel fresh kind-of. And it prevents me from extracting hours of what will be a short-life seeing how long it takes me to find the first post on TW. [Never succeeded, but never did care]

Attachments are stored on disk in files, not directly in the database.

Hence the attachments and photos that people are using are not the cause of the database slowdown.

However, they do count towards me exceeding the recommended disk space for my hosting account (1GB).

Perhaps I should just bite the bullet and buy a dedicated server. I have been doing a little bit of research on this, including the prices, and I think I could get by with something which only cost about 50-60% more per month than my current setup (although it would mean there would be a painful transition period as I move everything to the new hosting company). It would allow me to restore the old posts, as well as do drastic improvements on the speed and usability of the site.

Any comments on this idea (the big downside being that a) it would cost me more, b) I would have to spend significant time to move everything over, c) some things may be "in transition" for a while).
