Re: If we were to overhaul TW new [re: schizophrenic]

i like that one.

maybe there could be an option (like next to the email all replies to my real email addie one) like "this thread matters" so if someone just had a question, they wouldn't select it. and if it was something more worthwhile, they would.

i guess it would be a lot to ask people to judge the merit of their posts...but theres a lot on coffeeshop that is worth saving, if only because it's funny or whatever.

could the moderators be given mroe power to go through and clean up old/neglected threads?

maybe i'm leaning towards a dictatorial TW sort of...ooops.

This is an excellent idea.

As Alys indicates and as is evident, Evan's not around so much these days. But y'know, if/when he checks in, I'm hoping that some of these suggestions might be useful to him in terms of regulating the size of the board without sacrificing its quality.

Re: One more new [re: uncle_Ruskie]

In reply to:

Rather than limiting attachments. They should simply expire, and be automatically deleted. Give them a life of maybe 2 months. So if someone wants an image to be displayed more permanently they will have to seek out a more suitible home for it.

This is a very good idea, because people often impusively post stupid pictures in coffee shop and there's no reason they should permanently exist.
Also, I'm sorry I've been using the crap threads for so long when it is ridiculously easy to host pictures somewhere else.

A good idea in theory. But this would only lead to people replying to their own posts. Or people logging in as anons or alter-egos and replying just to keep their post from disappearing.

but, but.... new [re: Alys]

I agree with many ideas posted here but I'm not sure about the 'dead users' idea though.

Speaking from personal experience, I live in a remote area and for a long time only had access to one country ISP. And after a while that ISP didn't like me visiting TW, it just crashed my whole machine every single time I came here. For that whole year I had endless email discussions with Evan and with the ISP but in the end, I basically couldn't visit this site for a year I missed the whole Alexandah/Tyler thing too - thank god. And it wasn't through choice. I don't use the internet at work so I had no other means of accessing this board so in effect I could have become a 'dead user' without even wanting to, needing to or even knowing about it. Of course, I have a different ISP now , but shit happens and I just don't support the dead users idea with a lot of enthusiasm.

Just my 2c worth.

D.E.A.D. users new [re: SoulLoveChild]

In reply to:

6. Separate the message board registry from the fan registry.
7. Delete dead users.

Wouldn't this mean that you would have to register twice to be able to post here? If I remeber correcly, the registration process is hard enough as it is... Also, wouldn't this lead to infinite confusion when people are registered to the rest of TW with different name than the CP? Even though the idea is good on paper, i don't really think it works in practice.

In reply to:

And if they seriously don't want their account deleted they would just make a new post or something, restarting their TW biological clock.

This (might) lead to people posting crap to save their usernames. And if you have the situation like that of SoulLoveChild, you might have a hard time saving your username even if you wanted to.

This is the thing that i would fear if this became a practice. I'm painfully aware of the fact that I have no internet access at home, and it is doubtful that I can afford one in the future. Since the MB registry does not take up enormously space (especially when compared to all that shite of CS or the infamous crap threads), this feature would be relatively useless.

However, if it is taken into use, could it be possible that people could (somehow) reserve their username in case that they have to be away for over a year? That way no-one could take their username in their absence. I'm not sure how this would work in rreal life, but it's an idea...

Re: D.E.A.D. users new [re: Sysiyo]

I think the Hall of Fame thread idea could be resurrected(or variation thereof)

Obviously some thread need to be permanently kept and some need to be chucked out. What not have an electoral process.

I also think that all PM records older than 2 months should be eliminated(warnings would be nice, especially those with no current copies of old records)

This is no space saver, but can s omebody please change the fucking hours graphic that i can still see in the background?

Thank you!!

Suede new [re: WildWind]

I'd like to propose a permanent Suede thread. Every week there is like one thread on Suede (I just saw Suede, Suede has a new single, Suede's new CD cover is dumb.) Maybe it's time we had a little Suede corner where all the Suede fans could go to discuss these details.

Hell has all the good bands anyway.

You forgot two new [re: WildWind]

Two more improvements easily suggest themselves.
8. Give Interpretation threads a limited lifespan.
Seriously, only WildWind cares about what happens there so she could store those threads on her own computer.
9. Give News, Views and Questions threads a limited lifespan.
The "news" part suggested by the forum's name obviously has a limited life span. I am not that eager to go back and read the news that Bowie has performed a new song called I would be your slave. And the "views" and "Questions" threads are mostly stupid anyway. I mean, that whole forum is dedicated to an old singer who rarely sells any records anymore.

Joke aside, why not put a uniform, limited lifespan to all threads? That sounds like the easiest-implemented solution in my opinion and many MBs work that way. Would we suffer badly from this? If noone has replied to a thread in a while, then it is dead. Be it Interpretation or not.

In reply to:

[WW] 7. Delete dead users.

Surely, the drawbacks of this method (users like Emilio or Dara risking deletion) outweigh the benefits. But I don't really have an idea about how much space we could save here.

In reply to:

[schizophrenic] If a thread hasn't gotten a single response in one week, it dies.

These threads are rather few, and by their nature take up little space anyway! If you anyway have a limited lifespan, this idea is overkill.

For a moment I though I might have to thrash you new [re: Emil]

In reply to:

why not put a uniform, limited lifespan to all threads?

In effect, we have a uniform, limited lifespan on all fora now. Every time there's a culling, threads across the board are cut by uniform dates.

In reply to:

Would we suffer badly from this?

Yes, I think we would, and indeed, we have. We've lost many threads in other fora that people would like to go back and reference, while Coffee Shop is still enormous with a high noise-to signal ratio. The bulk of the surver space is still taken up by Coffee Shop. The problem is not solved. The message board continues to grow at a rate with which we cannot keep up, and IMO threads that are not of equal value are receiving equal treatment. Which brings us to...

In reply to:

If noone has replied to a thread in a while, then it is dead. Be it Interpretation or not.

I could not disagree with this more vehemently. Because interpreting songs is an ongoing process, it is not uncommon (in the context of Interpretation, which gets less traffic anyway) for a thread to be resurrected months after it "died," and that's independent of links to those threads that have value even after the discussion is over. In the words of bowiefanpeter:

In reply to:

Put the entire iterpretation forum back up onto the TW site. These contents are not date sensitive and will be brought back/searched in the future.

I know I'm not the only person on this board who thinks about and returns to old Interpretation threads, and I think that is a phenomenon that is unique to that forum.

I am suggesting that the fora should not be given equal weight because they are not of equal value.
