A New Forum at TW: Ratings and Rankings

I have been thinking about this possibility for some time and I think globule2 has brilliantly struck the heart of the matter in a message to me just now.

Essentially, the idea is to split N,V&Q into matters mostly factual and matters mostly opinion.

The two forums would perhaps look like this:

News, Views and Questions
Discuss the latest Bowie and music-related news stories and ask your questions about his music.

Ratings
The forum dedicated to rating, ranking and reviewing songs and albums.

Let me know what you think of this idea - or whether it could be done differently or even titled more clearly.

Doesn't that split the forum unnecessarily into pieces? I am not quite sure what we would gain and isn't that wild mix of Bowie topics part of the excitement? I am not sure, give me your arguments.

While I do get frustrated with all the ratings threads that sometimes can flood the forum, I don't know whether dividing it up is the answer. There seems to be enough trouble keeping non-Bowie-related threads out of NV&Q as it is, so I doubt everyone would really utilize the new forum. At this point, I think they're fine the way they are.

Okay, I get the message loud & clear, though it could have been a private one.

In reply to:

News, Views and Questions
Discuss the latest Bowie and music-related news stories and ask your questions about his music.

Ratings
The forum dedicated to rating, ranking and listing Bowie songs and albums.

Why split them? Both be pretty much of a muchness really wouldn't they? Surely any discussion regarding questions about Bowie & music-related news are ever cropping up in ratings, rankings, survivor threads anyways? And the bulk of that discussion is the same repeated shit.

I know when I've outstayed my welcome, Adam, so now I will fuck off and be glad of it.

Perhaps you should count how many of those threads I've either created myself or replied to in the last few weeks? Pretty much every one because I happen to love them myself.

I was just thinking there might be an additional reason to do this split now - especially seeing that the wider site doesn't have a "news" section as such.

No. new [re: Adam]

I'm against a split, and would like no more new forum additions as well. I think the system is perfect as it is now. The advantage of the TW boards is that they are very insightful. The Artiste forum was a perfect and much demanded forum back in the days, and I think everything is alright now. The rating threads don't bother me at all. When I like them I read and respond to them, and when I don't, well, I just won't read them.

Isn't life simple?

Same goes for picture threads. They belong in the Coffee Shop. The board is great as it is now. But maybe I'm oldfashioned?

Yes, I for one found it informative when pianocraft relayed Bowie's decision to do one-hour sets and show the full Blue Jean video as the encore for the remainder of the Reality tour. Helped me decide to see Simon & Garfunkel instead.

I think too many forums can be detrimental....it's intimidating for newer users, for one thing, to see so many forums. Also, I think that less popular forums like Interp suffer because peeps get out of the habit of visiting until the forum doesn't get enough fresh air in terms of point of view to make it viable. Sort of a Sysiyo-blowing-himself redundancy, d'ya see?

I must agree. The more there are forums and the more regulated this place seems to be, the scarier it is to newcomers. Also, nearly all list-threads spin off conversations. However, I would not oppose the creation of a separate "News" forum where people could post Bowie news they had found on the net. It would not be so much for conversation as simply carrying the news (since the news-section of the actual site is indeed inoperative as it is). This News forum could also be heavily moderated (contrary to our usual ideas of free speech), because of it's nature.

Also, I still support the idea of a pictures forum.

Don't mess with a good thing. new [re: Adam]

NV&Q is the best forum we have (imo) and I'd like to keep it the way it is.

So it seems that idea got the big raspberry then Adam?!

I personally don't want to see any forums split into more forums, it just takes more time to get around them, I don't even get around all these forums as it is.
