Re: The excessive use of alter egos new [re: pianocraft]

For a long time, I was convinced that I was an alter ego.

Then one day I looked in the mirror and looked at my user pic, and checked my username against my birth certificate and now I am pretty sure I am real.

But the problem remains.....how do I prove this to you pianocraft?

The Last Thing We Can Do new [re: pianocraft]

What gets me most with many alter egos isn't just their delibrately senseless and stupid posting. What's worse is that they make the good posters lose interest and recede from posting. If that isn't stopped this site won't be a valuable Bowie board for very much longer.

As the technical means of identification are not in the hands of the moderators I can only try to stop the alter ego influence by not reacting to their posts. I have tried to do that for quite a while now and have pointed out to others that they are answering to an alter ego, hoping they would stop to answer as well. Of course there are too many alter egos around to avoid them completely, but as soon as you get the impression that you are dealing with one of those things I would recommend to just not reply. In the long run some of them hopefully will then get fed up with threads in which they only interact with themselves.

And I want to believe
In the madness that calls 'now'

Why don't you post a list of who think is an alter ego.

I would be fascinated to read it.

Using your moderator powers should be a great help.

This is a GENUINE post i assure you.

Thanks for the good advice. I'm glad the mods acknowledge that this is annoying.

Unfortunately, those who have tastefully and brilliantly used alter egos to create parody and satire will suffer. I am sorry. But it is possible that you would finally like to receive credit for the creative use of alternate characters?

Not that I am assuming that I use my alter egos tastefully, but I think that about 80% of the fun in reading or writing an alter's posts is watching people slowly figure it out for themselves. I would rather be interesting than credited. Of course, the interesting part is up for debate.

I do agree though that there are far too many alters that have no real purpose beyond simply echoing the personality or opinions of thier creator. If you are going to go through the trouble of creating an alter ego, the least you can do is give them some sort of back story or personality. Even if it is completely lame, which it usually is. I think every alter ego should strive to be like JesusHChrist. You know; transparently fake with about one or two running jokes that get old after the first reading. That would be good.

It seems in the last few weeks, we've gotten a giant wave of newbies who are quite vocal about being such and have tons of annoying questions. To make matters worse, they like to start new threads all over the place asking dumb questions instead of just being a bother on existing topics as many newbies are at first. And I have noticed that they're all being treated decently by everyone!

Oh, don't you have something better to do than insult newbies all the time? Say... look here! This nice man has found a pretty sheep for you. He says it's really friendly.

Hmmm, but Bowie has alter egos. we would not have had Ziggy, the Thin White Duke, etc. i think alter egos have something to say. we may not always like thier messages, but do we always like Bowie's music when he is not expressing some ego state?

The Atonal Express left the tonal world behind...
