The excessive use of alter egos

At one time, the "alter ego," an alternate character created by a regular user, was used tastefully. However, now that this idea has caught on, the use of the alter ego has gotten out of hand. What do I mean by this?

Now we have several posters posting as themselves, and also as four or five other alter egos at the same time. There is no way for the TW members to correct these members through flames, criticism or scourgings because we are not ever sure who they are.

In an extreme example, I believe we have at least one member who posts as at least 15 other people.

Consequently, we have forums flooded with dozens of alter egos: regular members hiding behind fake characters to purge their inner autism.

This creates a sloppy and silly message board. How to solve this problem? Alter egos can be identified and "outed" by the mods. Thus, the regular members can at least criticize those who abuse the alter ego concept.

Unfortunately, those who have tastefully and brilliantly used alter egos to create parody and satire will suffer. I am sorry. But it is possible that you would finally like to receive credit for the creative use of alternate characters?

Unfortunately, we'd have to reach an agreement with the other mods and shit like that, so it would never work...

Hunh unh. We can't agree on anything. Why, at the very last moderators' shindig we had, Sysiyo and I had voted on watching Clockwork Orange and having hummus and beer. Well, Adam and EJ thought we needed to drink red wine, eat yellow cheeze, and then go bowling. So, needless to say, we ended up getting a demonstration from an internationally renowned taxidermist who showed us how to stuff a cat. Then we had tea sandwiches and went home. Tati, being the only sensible person around just sent her regrets. (Her movie vote was for Butt Sluts V, but Sysiyo, not having seen I through IV nixed that idea immediately 'cause he was afraid he wouldn't know what was going on.)

Re: The excessive use of alter egos new [re: pianocraft]

I discussed this (in person) with Adam at the Adelaide after show party and, unless he wasn't telling me the whole truth, he indicated that it's not possible for the Mods to do that, as they can't see the IP addresses - only Evan can. (Unless some of you New Mods know different).

In reply to:

I believe we have at least one member who posts as at least 15 other people.

Hmmm, yes. One wonders how you know that. Interestingly I indicated to Adam that another TWer firmly believed that you, pianocraft, are Evan. Adam was surprised by this so it can't possibly be true....can it?

But Tati is right, Butt Sluts V is the best.

I firmly believe there are very few new members at TW. When you see a new username, it is merely an old member registering a new alter ego.

Those with the least to say, say it with the most alter egos.

To make matters worse, they like to start new threads all over the place asking dumb questions instead of just being a bother on existing topics as many newbies are at first. secret monitor, secret hard drive new [re: pianocraft]

Thank you for this pointed but necessary thread, pianocraft.

I agree with you one-hundred percent. There is nothing more mind-numbing than a stoopid alter ego.

The worst ones are those dukewhite has called attention to: the "newbie" alter ego, who bait the dumb among us by coming to the board with "questions" about how it works and why we all behave so horribly.

LISTEN TO ME, AUTHORS OF SHITTY NEWBIE ALTER EGOS: If this is the *best* idea you can come up with, then get up from your computer RIGHT NOW and walk into the nearest bathroom. When you get there go up to the mirror and bash your head into it. Hopefully your hard head broke it into shards and you are bleeding now. Finally, pick up one of the shards and put us out of your misery once and for all by slashing your throat - neatly, bleed into the sink.

Or go out of this world TJ style. Whichever.

I find it maddening that the best alter egos this board has seen often toil in vain, winning no praise or encouragement, while the stupid ones get all the attention.

The Last Thing We Can Do new [re: pianocraft]

What gets me most with many alter egos isn't just their delibrately senseless and stupid posting. What's worse is that they make the good posters lose interest and recede from posting. If that isn't stopped this site won't be a valuable Bowie board for very much longer.

As the technical means of identification are not in the hands of the moderators I can only try to stop the alter ego influence by not reacting to their posts. I have tried to do that for quite a while now and have pointed out to others that they are answering to an alter ego, hoping they would stop to answer as well. Of course there are too many alter egos around to avoid them completely, but as soon as you get the impression that you are dealing with one of those things I would recommend to just not reply. In the long run some of them hopefully will then get fed up with threads in which they only interact with themselves.

And I want to believe

Not that I am assuming that I use my alter egos tastefully, but I think that about 80% of the fun in reading or writing an alter's posts is watching people slowly figure it out for themselves. I would rather be interesting than credited. Of course, the interesting part is up for debate.

I do agree though that there are far too many alters that have no real purpose beyond simply echoing the personality or opinions of thier creator. If you are going to go through the trouble of creating an alter ego, the least you can do is give them some sort of back story or personality. Even if it is completely lame, which it usually is. I think every alter ego should strive to be like JesusHChrist. You know; transparently fake with about one or two running jokes that get old after the first reading. That would be good.
