Re: Girl with the mousey hair, part II new [re: Hannibal_Lecter]

Bizzare, all of Mr. Lecter's punctuation appears on my computer as Chinese symbols. Am I the only one?

On the topic, sure delete away. 100 days is a long time for a post to be dead, if you can even remember a post that old you're not drinking nearly enough gin.

Why can't I paint you new [re: Sysiyo]

If indeed the bulk of CS is causing Oopsies, and if auto-expiry is working in Artiste, then employing auto-expiry in CS seems the most logical way to trim the weight, but I wonder how we can tell that this is definitely the cause for Oopsies. Today seems much better, and we don't have fewer threads today.

In reply to:

The auto expiry system is working perfectly fine for the Artiste forum (though there has been a slight slump in posts made there

I find it highly unlikely that the two things are related.

In reply to:

save valuable ones that haven't been seen in some time, like this

This is worth saving? This is worth valuable bandwidth? Hmmm . . . 'course now I had to go post on it again and revive it!

In reply to:

Am I the only one?

I don't know about the rest of them, but this anomaly is not occurring on my computer.

Actually they are, because up until that point people were under the (false) impression their work would be saved in the forum forever.

It is of course entirely possible the bulk posts in CS are not causing the oopsing. As said, I'm no expert in these things.

While it might not be incredibly "valuable" per se, it is noetheless a milestone thread. What I was trying to point out, and perhaps I failed in this effort, was that there is a history to the boards that would be lost if great threads (include TJ's death thread if you choose) are just deleted.

Doesn't everyone on here have a thread or two that have a special place in your heart, despite perhaps not being the most worthwhile topic? Or a specific post that you are particularly proud of that you'd really be sad to know was gone forever?

I'll be seeing YOU in New York, Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, Kansas City, St. Louis, Washington DC, Moline, Columbus, Wantagh, and Holmdel. So dress sharp.

I guess this goes to show how different people "use" TW. This makes it sound like people create art forTW's sake, that they wouldn't make it otherwise. Whereas I (in my very limited artisteness) thought it was a place to share what would have been created otherwise. I see your point. I guess I never would have written limericks about farts and circumcision, or haiku about wonderbras if the Artiste forum had not inspired me to do so. And how about that Five Minute Writing Exercise? That rocked! Now I'm getting all sad and weepy!

But! Adam did give plenty of warning prior to the threads expiring, and people had plenty of chances to save their work if this was the only place it existed.

Yes. See above. But I'm just a silly, dottering, old sentimental fool.

Shit. Here comes that Oopsie message. Watch, all this typing and my post may be lost!

Wheat from the Chaff new [re: dukewhite]

There are indeed a lot of threads which would be a shame to lose, but there are also a lot more threads which have no historical significance. I am sure that threads like the TJNewton one, would be considered worthy of keeping, maybe there would have to be two moderators approval of a thread being deleted, with the power of veto applying?

Believe everything I say, especially the lies.

We fuck first, *then* we eat new [re: Sysiyo]

In reply to:

Like I indicated in my post, had you read it properly, I do not claim to know what posts are important enough to be saved.

Yes, my dearest Sissy, I am quite aware of what you said. The point was, since you're obviously a dunderhead and need it spelling out for you, is that NO ONE is in the position to determine which are good or bad thread - different people look for different things at TW - and trawling through them all would require several aeons. However, since you've singled out the Coffee Shop, you *have* obviously made a judgement on the quality of that forum. Here are three NVQ threads which I deem equally tedious, if not more so.

1) The inimitable ‘I bought a Bowie CD thread’
2) A THBDB – sorry duke, but I guess we all make slips occasionally.
3) The Worst of Bowie CD – redone ad nauseum.

(No offence to the perpetrators of those threads, but they’re really fucking awful.) Also, just as the original Alphabet Survivor threads were deleted, it might be a reasonable idea to file the current batch also.

You will find that most Bowie fans who are interested in Bowie-related topics (the really interesting stuff, like what Bowie ate for breakfast today and Claude's latest close-ups on Bowie's crotch) have already found other sites/news forums because TW has not been updated for so long. Also, if anyone reading this is genuinely interested in these Bowie topics, I can offer an impartial list of independent psychiatrists I highly recommend visiting.

Anyway, I believe at least some of the Oops to be caused by corrupt databases (I’m not entirely sure what that means, but Evan has mentioned it here). I would suggest that this is something NOT due to the volume of posts but the mechanics of the server. Notably, when TW last went down and everyone disappeared to wankerworld, the problem was fixed WITHOUT removing any old threads.

Also, the Chinese characters guy above has invitation to a SPECIAL BANQUET.
