There is no free speech here

A certain Anon recently posted something about Daddy liking black people. It was racist, tasteless, and stupid. It was insulting and offensive. But the deletion of this thread was uncalled for, especially since it is derivative of the standard offensive material that is generated by Fred Phelps, JesusHChrist, or a short list of other posters.

If you are going to claim free speech, you have to allow for material that is tasteless, stupid, and sometimes offensive. I think it's time that we cut the bullshit and be honest that if something is offensive enough -- to the right people, of course -- it will not be tolerated. In so doing, let's please have a comprehensive list of material that is off limits. It isn't censorship that angers me. Evan, Adam, and the mods are free to do with their website whatever they wish. What's pissing me off is the pretense of free speech and democracy. It's a load of crap by now and we're all just using it as hot air to blow up each other's asses. Can we please just stop pretending?

Besides, it's not like black people even come here.

Hi Monkeyboy. The "right person" in this instance was me. I didn't care for the tenor of that thread, so I just let it sort of drop with a certain mod who would die 4 me that "me no like", and whoops! It went on permanent holiday.

Don't misunderstand that I judged it offensive. It just bored me, and I thought it would be funnier to see who complained when I made it go bye-bye.

Sorry, I won't know the ka-ka 'til I see it. I guess peeps can PM me a preview of their material and I'll get back to 'em. Or they can just rooooolllll the dice.

No argument here. Really amateur racism if you ask me. But still, you know me and my ideological quests...

I'll send a batch of posts for your approval.

Re: There is no free speech here new [re: Monkeyboy]

Hi Monkeyboy,

I deleted that particular post after it was appearing in the hot topics of the Teenage Wildlife front page, which I could not see as appropriate.

I usually let racism fly at Teenage Wildlife as if someone is a racist, then I'd rather know who we are dealing with - rather than have someone come in to censor it and effectively 'protect' the poster. In this particular case, the poster was a faceless anon so I could not see that reasoning in this case.

Anyway, I was not sure what the correct thing to do was in this case. I even asked Evan about it but have not heard back from him. Should we put this to a vote?

Re: There is no free speech here new [re: Adam]

There was no reason for that post to exist, it was serving no purpose other that for people to post racist crap in response to it. It was yet another reason why Anons shouldn't have free reign anywhere, especially when the anons are usually known posters hiding behind their anonymity to post rubbish. The initial post was stupid, but it brought forth some really racist replies (again from anons).

I have only been here just over a year, and in that time I have seen the board have some really good discussions on serious subjects, have some hilarious times on fun topics and also of course some of the best Bowie discussion you can find on the net, and it's fair share of crap too, of course. It just seems to me that there is too much 'crap' lately and not enough content. When we get a serious newbie, they are scared off the board by the mods when they post in the wrong place, yet nothing gets said to, for example, Beltene when she posts random nonsense in the feedback forum.

I don't think censorship as such is needed here, I would hate the board to become too 'PC' but when a useless anon posts this sort of thing it should be gotten rid of, or indeed if anyone does. It could be said that monkeyboy steps over the line sometimes, but I cannot see how anyone could take him seriously as it is done with a certain wit.

Well done Adam for deleting the post, it is a shame the administrator had to and not the moderator though.

One further point, the mods have said that they only have juristiction over specified fora, is it not possible for any mod to be given rights to all? As some of them are only on here sparingly these days it would seem a better system. Especially with the coffee shop as this is where the majority of posts are made.

I fly to the nearest bar

As mentioned before no moderator has access to all forums. So even if one would have wished to delete it he/she may not have been able to. From those around only Adam has full powers.

Still I wouldn't have deleted it apart from the reason Adam has given. Serious idiocy normally falls into oblivion here quite quickly as few to none people normally reply to that stuff. Much of the loony threads we get seem indeed to come from registered posters who find joy and exhilaration in stirring up discussions like this and are always quick on the ball when it comes to the subject of "free speech" while misusing the term themselves every other day. Myself I am fairly bored with that.

If you get your head out of your ass long enough, you might find your balls. Then you can mention us by name.

What if Fred Phelps were to have a homo-bashing thread that received such glory?

So is it safe to say that Anons have less rights than registered users? Shouldn't we let that be known? It would really be helpful to everyone.

I have a feeling that, unlike EJ, you aren't being a passive-aggressive dick when you say this. For his sake (and I really hope for once he doesn't use his fucked up ad-hominem logic here), I will clarify my points:

1) Free speech can't exist so long as there are topics, words, or phrases that are "off limits". It is simply impossible for the two situations to be true at the same time.
2) Given that free speech doesn't really exist here, it is only fair to the posters -- especially the new ones -- to list which topics, words, or phrases are not allowed. This is called common decency. Think of potty training a dog, imagine that we don't know any better.
3) If such rules really do exist (pay attention here, EJ as this is the part where you usually put your fingers in your ears and go "lalalala" because you like to think I'm an ass): that's fine. All I'm asking is that the guidelines be clearly laid out and that we let it be known that Anons have different rules to live by. Or, as stated before, it's the hypocrisy of claiming the right to free speech that bothers me, not the absence of said right.
4) maybe I should restate that for people who think that I just want to post dead baby and naked lady pictures: it's the hypocrisy of claiming the right to free speech that bothers me, not the absence of said right. It's your website, do what you want with it.

It's only polte that you let your guests know what the house rules are. Obviously, letting it be governed by "common decency" or what we "know is wrong" isn't working. Besides, isn't it "common decency" to let people know what the house rules are before expecting them to abide by them? And isn't it somewhat wrong to expect a bunch of cross-dressing drunks and potential paedophiles to instinctively know what six different people individually think is wrong?

So yeah, put it up t a vote if you like. That would at least be following the bullshit line of there being democracy here. To be perfectly honest, though, I would just be happy if everyone admitted to themselves that with Evan's departure we saw the end of democracy -- for better or for worse -- and that what we are witnessing around here is something that we like to call democracy because it makes us feel better about the fact that it is, in fact, dead. I can deal with that, I'm an American.

Oh yeah, and EJ's an asshole.
