A mod has to be a participating member of the board. Even if Sys does still frequent these parts, he doesn't contribute to the board as much as a mod should and therefore I propose a new moderator be instated.

The three people with the most nominations will be placed into a poll.

We survived for a long time with none, then with one. The current batch were appointed to spread the load when Adam couldn't be here at all times. Even with the apparent recent absences of Sys, Ohro and Adam, EJ has been on hand to moderate as he feels necessary (as we've witnessed today).

Also, I'm sure Adam will be spending more time here once he concludes his world walkabout. And with anons currently banned, it's not like moderation is required all that frequently.

However, it seems that when a picture is posted that goes against the rules, it is usually hours before it is removed. The thing is, it is usually the people who know better, who post the offensive images. The boundaries have never been formally stated, so they're not all that clear.

There are no rules as such, only precedents. And even they shift with time and different moderators.

I'm pretty certain Evan would never have bothered to remove dildo pics or Tubgirl back when he was our one true God.

Which is another reason we shouldn't be in too much in a rush to appoint new moderators. Because new moderators may bring additional ideas as to what is acceptable and what requires censorship, and before we know it, we're in the Web equivalent of a police state.

Well, you'd have my vote. My only reservation would be it might cramp your style. You might feel you had to live up to the role. Or you might feel that being a mod made it less acceptable to pick fights with other posters. Sys was a bit of an enfant terrible back in the day. In his case he became an even better poster after becoming a mod, but it could work the other way too.

As I remember it, Adam and Evan always prided 'emselves on only ever stretching their moderational muscles if times really, really called for 'em - you know, times when the board came to an entire stand still, posters intentionally trying to anger and alienate other users every hour of the day, people being fired from their jobs for inadvertently finding some come-covered whores on their work computers...

While Sys and I had a few problems with each other, I think that we established via PMs that they weren't anything personal. I made no secret that I thought he was way too heavy-handed with his duties, but one good thing that I'll say for him is that you always knew what to expect from him.

I tend not to have problems with EJ, but one criticism that I have to mention is that there is very little consistency in his decision making. A tubgirl or a dildo can be fine one day from one poster, but change any number of unknown variables (maybe there were Jews on the bus and it irritated him or something) and you never know how they will be greeted the next.

One thing I would like to add to this argument, and one which appears to have been missed;
When did Moderator equal censor?

The removing of offensive material is only one function of a moderator's functions. They are also there to advise people on the workings of the message board, there to assist with problems members might have, for example log-in difficulties, how to use the more advanced features of the message board etc. They are there to defuse volatile situations between posters and also to do the day to day housekeeping of the board, moving threads to correct sub fora etc. It is a lot more, or should be than just deleting the odd tub girl picture.

They should be a point of reference to any member who needs their help on matters relating to the board.

If nothing else, let someone have control of the news feeder on the front page, it cannot be that difficult to do in this day and age.

I quite like Pablo's version of what it should be, but it's clearly not what we have right now.

I've no idea how the current mods were appointed, what their brief was, why they were chosen.

Leaving aside the insults and the hurt feelings on both sides, it would be really great if the two remaining mods would take some time from their very busy schedules to explain to us if there are any circumstances in which they could be persuaded to step aside and make way for democratically elected new moderators, or however they get appointed around here?

Think about it guys. I know you're very busy so what would it take to make your lives less busy? A simple majority of TWers asking for your resignation? Or something more?

I am well, there's nothing physically or emotionally wrong with me (well, nothing more than the usual, anyway). I apologise for not informing people ('xcept for the other mods) about my leaving, but I did not want to make a fuss about my leaving.

I left because I felt I had nothing further to contribute to these boards. I've said all there is to say about Bowie, most of those things far too many times, I've lost most of my interest in Bowie and his music, and I've never cared very much for the non-Bowie conversations here. So leaving seemed like the most sensible option.

I might return full time someday. Or I might not.

If someone is not interested in the subject matter, and they have in all intent retired from the board, then their level of enthusiasm for the helping of newbies etc is going to be extremely lacking. Evan put one administrator and four moderators here for a purpose, surely if some of the ones who were appointed no longer care enough to do the job, others should be chosen/appointed/voted in who will give the position the attention Evan thought it deserved.

As I have said before, moderators are not just about censorship, part of their role is to help the other members and also, something which EJ does well in V+Q, encourage discussion.

It is not a question of babysitting newbies, It is part of a moderators job to assist the new members ( we should be so lucky as to have new members ), When I first joined TW Sys was the one who helped me in so many ways, through PMs and onboard advice.

I'm now considerably less enthusiastic about appointing new ones than I am about simply getting rid of some old ones. Or at the very least putting some manners on them.

I still say Strawman's idea that we only need one moderator, Adam, is the best one. If Adam feels he needs help, so be it though. It might be worthwhile appointing ones that can be relied on to behave in a more Adam-like fashion.
