Re: A fair and balanced account of TW new [re: White Prism]

This is great, White Prism!

I'd like you to add an explanation of The Thomaswood Rule, and maybe go into some more details on alter egos (also, that deserves to be much higher up in the entry) and then I move Adam makes a copy of this entry an Official Sticky Introduction to TW in the Site Feedback forum.

I can't believe you wrote all of that out, though!

Also, someone needs to edit the wikipedia entry with information about newbie hazing and TW's reputation as one of the "meanest" and more confusing message boards (ie, why we think it deserves an entry).

TW's reputation as one of the "meanest"

I'm sure that I'm just asking this because I'm drunk but do we really? I'm not so much doubting you as I am hoping that it's true. I agree that we probably are but if anyone can show me proof that we actually do have a reputation I think I might piss myself in joy.

Re: A fair and balanced account of TW new [re: Monkeyboy]

From what I've seen on other sites, yes...

Isn't that how they always talk about us on WonderWorld, etc?

Anyway, I edited the Wikipedia entry and I provided a link to at least one comment indicating our abusiveness.

If anyone can also find any reference to anything Bowie's said about us (I know he complained about our being mean and "teenage" at least twice!), that would be very useful.

Edit:

I think there may also be a reference to us in the Sock Puppet part of their Deletion guide:

One exception to the principle of assume good faith concerns the use of sockpuppets. This tactic is commonly employed by vandals and bad-faith contributors who create multiple user accounts in an attempt to bias the decision process. A close variation is to enlist "meatpuppets", people from outside Wikipedia to "run in" (for example, if my vanity article about a web forum is up for deletion and I post a call for other forum members to "help keep our website in Wikipedia".).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Guide_to_deletion

Unless that's a common occurence there, in which case I guess I can understand their skittishness.

Significance [re: Starlite]

Some of the following could be added to help counteract their claims of 'not significant enough':

Significance

Established in October 1994, Teenage Wildlife is one of the largest and oldest music communities on the internet.

Commencing life as The David Bowie File, the site began mainly as an experiment in Web content development (interfacing a search engine to data on the Web), and as a convenient repository for David Bowie lyrics.

In August 1996, the site was renamed Teenage Wildlife (after the song on Bowie's Scary Monsters) and in early October, it moved to a new commercial hosting service. Around this time, a birthday card project was undertaken, coinciding with Bowie's 50th birthday on January 8, 1997. A large format version of the online card was printed and sent to Bowie, and then used in a multimedia presentation at the entrance to his concert on January 9, 1997 at Madison Square Garden.

A decisive turn in Teenage Wildlife's history occurred during David Bowie's Earthling tour in mid-late 1997 when a set of tour pages was added, one per concert, with the ability for users to add comments about each show, register as concertgoers and buy/sell or trade tickets. This proved immensely popular, and became well known to Bowie's band, as they stated that they would often log on the next day to see what the audience thought of the previous night's show.

In 1998, the average number of visitors per day was around 1500-2000, with nearly 10,000 page views per day.

Teenage Wildlife hit one million visitors on August 1 1998 since the inception of a frontpage counter in September 1995, and ran a celebration drawing. Bowie himself donated a gift of a one year's subscription to BowieNet, and Teenage Wildlife added over $350 in prizes for the winners.

In January 27, 2000, the current version of the Teenage Wildlife forum was established and it remains one of the earliest surviving examples of UBB threaded forums (formerly wwwthreads).

In 2002, Teenage Wildlife and a quote from one of the forum regulars appeared on the front page of Nicholas Pegg's The Complete David Bowie, widely regarded as the 'bible' among Bowie fans.

In 2006, the number of hits at Teenage Wildlife has reached over 7.5 million whilst the forum maintains over 12,500 registered users and has attracted almost half a million public messages since 2000.

How is it pompous for me to not claim to be one of the 3 "respectable" users?

Using the sycophantic word "respectable" alone makes your post creepy and pompous.

In reply to:

Are you a "respectable" user, Dogz?

I think the word dedicated is better and yes I am a dedicated user.

Re: A fair and balanced account of TW [re: Starlite]

I have it all figured out. We need to have a TWer in their board of administrators. Becoming an administrator there is easy. All you have to do is register, keep a relatively low profile and make a few valuable contributions.

I fart in your general direction.

Alright, but you still haven't answered my question: how is it pompous?

The two terms are not interchangable - especially not in this context. If we were asking for all the "dedicated" users to go and help the cause we would simply get a parade of retards such as yourself. This, I think, would be counter-productive.

By thinking there are only three respectable users, a case of superiour breeding maybe?

NO! respectability has absolutely nothing to do with this matter, what is respectable in your eyes, may not be in others.

Dedication works everytime, take my word for it, a mass of dedicated users has far more credence than so-called respectability and it reeks of snobbery.

Just calm down dear, this is not a case for causus belli.
