What does TW mean to you?

With Monkeyboy's departure from the hallowed boards of TW and his reasons for this, ie/ that he no longer feels the need to boardbash morons to fulfil the aching void in his heart, I got to wondering... what exactly does TW mean to people? Why do people continue to come here and make posts? What is it they are looking for... friendship, witty banter, to vent spleen or even horror of horrors to just talk about Bowie?

What I mean to say is that I've been on many message boards over the years... and yet this is the only one which I regularly even addictively contribute to, even though the actual TW website has died a slow and painful death.

So why? What does TW mean to you? Why do you still come here... what the hell is wrong with you people?

The people, friends, the laughs and the interest in Bowie. Also for the following of related popular musics and aftershocks.

Because other boards are boring new [re: Persilot]

The people here are just wacky. Wacky and dedicated to keeping this place alive. There are no normal threads here. Nobody talks things through in a reasonable way. Threads about the most humdrum or predictable topics turn out strange. There are characters. There are intrigues.

I've always put it down to us being interested in Bowie. Something inside of us all related to his creating a persona to hide his real self. Related to seeing everything upside down and inside out. That's why the people here are madmen, and I'm content your all the same as me.

I once said to someone recently, "I've never seen a messageboard survive for even weeks after the parent site died. If boards were plants then TW is the cactus. It just survives."

That person then told me that TW is indeed like a cactus. It's full of pricks.

He was still posting as of yesterday.

I come here because it's so radically different from other Bowie forums, one's never sure who might turn on you, there is no sickening jolly sycophancy, one is allowed to speak one's mind, plus it's the best darn site I've ever had the privilege to be a member of. We have a weird but comfortable continuity, unique I would call it.

We are friends in our rights, but not to the point of saying so.

And we do have the odd Bowie exclusive, now and then.

I've been reading Monkeyboy's posts everywhere. He hasn't left.

TW has not died and is as vibrant as it always has been. We see things thru templates we create in order to make sense of the world.

If Monkeyboy feels a need to "bash morons" he will find another venue in which to do it as he kisses TW goodbye.

TW means Teenage Wildlife to me. It is where teenages can be wild if they want to be.

I don't post much ( because I have absolutely nothing worthwile to say to – and the reason I post now is that I'm drunk ).

But what keeps me coming back to this forum is its strange dysfunctionality as a community. This place is so full of hostility that it's quite funny.

Let's keep it up. I'd hate if his place turned out to like another BWW . They have no edge.

Well, I came here at first because it seemed interesting. I was also in hospital waiting room for my grandma at the time.

It still interests me, because like what was said before, there are topic here unlike no other site. THreads started here would get me banned at other websites.

That and its a good time waster if you're an insomiac.

Hmm, that parhaps explains why I've kept haunting this place for so long...

Well, that and the fact that (like Vanessa said), TW tolerates a large number of subjects that would be banned on other sites. I always feel uneasy on other forums with their rigid rules and the danger that my posts will get deleted for some unfathomable reason. So keep it anarchic, good folks of TW, that is what makes these boards so special.

Re: What does TW mean to you? new [re: Persilot]

What TW means to me... Difficult question, since lately there have been times when I've been posting here only about twice a month, and sometimes even thought about completely leaving this site. But still, something keeps drawing me back here everytime, even after a short break.

First I think I came here for the obvious reason: to discuss Bowie. And still, this seems to be, where I first hear, if Bowie does anything even slightly interesting. And also, this is the place to talk about it, since there's no-one else around me in my life outside web, who's interested enough. For example, a few people have noticed me wearing my Ziggy-socks, but that's usually created only a less than three-minute conversation. On the other hand, here...

But since Bowie's been doing so little in public lately, there must be some other reason I still come here... I guess it just has to do something with the people. And I guess the honesty of people, even when it means being rude. And the freedom to forget the original subject of a thread. And the freedom to start threads about almost any topic, like a couple of people have already mentioned.

This is a sort of internet equivalent of a play ground. There are a few bullies, but also a lot of fun people to play with.

Re: What does TW mean to you? new [re: Persilot]

Monkeyboy's leaving very soon & it looks like Dara has kept to his word and has also left as a consequence. So because of that and crass accusations that I'm trying to be like Monkeyboy and that my thread topics are silly, I've decided to contribute solely to the TW Fantasy League thread which runs until May 2007.

That's what TW means to me - these days.

Related previous results, in poll format, per ped_xing's request.

I believe all the options in that poll were various reasons why I was here last August, though I honestly can't remember which one I voted for myself. It was probably the 'barely literate....' option.

Yes, but when there's only a dozen or so regular posters to a message board & two of the best leave, it's to that boards detriment don't you think?

Phoenix kicks MB & Dara's asses in tandem new [re: Strawman]

I missed why Dara was leaving. He's leaving because Monkeyboy is, I take it?

Immediately yes, there will be a gap. But already in the last week there's been a few relatively new 'lesser' posters that have recommenced posting. And there are always former giants that return occasionally like Phoenix & Remade/Remodelled.

And it should be noted that both Dara and Monkeyboy have 'left' for periods of greater than a year in the past before eventually returning.

Why is it that yourself, Dara, Hawker and all the other 'emotionally fragile' heteros of the site keep threatening to leave?

Re: What does TW mean to you? new [re: Persilot]

Some years ago when there were still threads about the war in iraq and the whole 9/11 incident, it was an amazing place to discuss the different points of view. Meanwhile there is rarely any discussion left since it is more or less about finding the perfect punchline for one of the messages which came before. A bit like a Madonna forum in a different style.

I'm delighted to see the return of Phoenix & Remade/Remodelled, but even with their presence the numbers of posters here are still low.

Because when people like Dara & Monkeyboy leave and similarly gifted posters like yourself refrain from using the place consistently it gets mightily boring here. Nothing to do with emotional fragility or being heterosexual.

Watashi wa ichiban TWer des new [re: Persilot]

I am here because, having been seperated from the associates, cronies and acolytes I had spent nearly 22 years hand-picking in New Zealand, I find myself actually having to make friends in real life rather than just make cutting and hilarious remarks about people.

So I come here with the ongoing ambition of making Bamboo7 cry with my 'constant hatred'.

Also: I pay 4000 yen monthly for unlimited internet access so I'm determined to get more than my money's worth.

Last month I used 77 000 worth of time so I think I'm doing OK

And I'm a creature of habit: I have been visiting this place as often as possible since I was 16 and probably will keep doing so till one of us dies

1) Fun. No other site makes me laugh like this one.

2) Food for thought. Some people here are well-educated and smart, and good writers. Reading their posts makes me a better man. I don't need Jesus anymore.

3) The Beautiful English Language. Where did I learn about rhyming slang and words like "ham-wallet", "vaginatarian" and "hampton"? Neither at school nor at work.

4) Pictures of a fat old Bowie. Nothing feels better: he's the best songwriter on Earth, he has a beautiful wife, he's a zillionaire, but look at his puffed up face! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

All styles are good except the tiresome kind.

So it would seem the general consensus is that people like the ethos of TW. They are in favour of the devil may care attitude of many of the posters and find the complete willingness to discuss anything liberating and exciting.

I'm inclined to agree...

Humor. There's some funny folk on these boards. As an added bonus, it's humor steeped in bitterness, cynicism and grammatical pedantry which, coincidentally, are also my three favorite books of the Bible.

Also: watching people angrily reproach Monkeyboy when they unwittingly click on a link to Tubgirl. Speaking of...Monkeyboy, if you're done with that shtick, can I have it? I'll never get my custom title otherwise.
