There's nothing like TW! new

The other day I decided it was high time for me to try other fan sites, just to see how they would compare to TW. So I registered to some French Depeche Mode fan site and after making a few conventional posts I decided to try a little humour.

First I told a guy who had just mentioned his boyfriend that I was surprised to discover that Depeche Mode had gay fans. He didn't get the joke, was all upset, and wrote a preachy reply which was hilarious, at least to me. But now I'm afraid my Depeche Mode expertise won't make up for my homophobe reputation there.

The next day there was a very exciting thread whose goal was to gather "sexy" pictures of Martin Gore. So once again I decided to be funny and posted a picture of some French politician named Martine (this is pronounced like Martin). Two minutes later I received a PM from a guy who was apparently very upset (he called me a jerk) and asked me to remove my post IMMEDIATELY. Of course I replied, called him a rude and uptight twat (that was a mistake, I know) and left the picture where it belonged.

I just checked the site and found that an admin had deleted my post. I wrote to one of them, asking him wether humour was allowed on the boards or not and he replied that, yes, humour is allowed on some particular occasions, but they do not want too much of it. Apparently they see themselves as the valuable French fan site and they won't allow anything even slightly off topic. It's like the fora are a work of art that must remain a perfectly pure place of adoration. I'd probably get banned if I said Martin Gore was fat, but what do they think, that Dave Gahan checks the site every day and will send them candy if they keep the fora all neat and tidy? What a bunch of uptight dummies.

So now I come back to TW and check for new messages and there is my beloved tubgirl, my bad poetry repository, my links to bestial porn and, most important of all, all those people who won't hate me if I call them fags every two minutes.

I'm telling you, folks: stop ranting and whining, for there is nothing like Teenage Wildlife!

Ya, this was my post:

Right-wing Republicans are weird.

When gays and lesbians want to marry and raise kids in the suburbs, the right-wingers freak out. "Perverts!" they scream at these bland strivers. But when supposedly straight soldiers in the army, marines and CIA engage in male-on-male rape and other acts of homo-sadism so bizarre and extreme they turn off the average, gay-marriage-craving civilian, Republican legislators think it's the best thing ever.

Think Abu Ghraib - Iraqi inmates led around like dogs on leashes. Iraqi prisoners, almost all later released as innocent, stripped of their clothes and forced to pile on top of each other naked.

Hundreds of photos showed sex acts between and among soldiers and detainees. Male prisoners were videotaped while being forced to masturbate and have sex with one another. U.S. soldiers, CIA torturers and private mercenaries hired by Bush's Defense Department sodomized them with flashlights and possibly broomsticks. They were kept naked for days at a time. Some were smeared with feces.

I have just come back from a quick look at that Bowie Zone page which Claude linked here a while ago. They have this 9/11 memorial thread there in which they call upon everyone to never forget what happened. When I dropped a line there asking to also not forget how the Bush regime mishandled the situation and how it all has led to endless blood shedding and deaths I got the classic American responses about US heroes and European cowards. Lovely.

Maybe we should all register and post there for a while. Could be fun. Dogz, wouldn't you want to go there and start a few topics?

Re: There's nothing like TW! new [re: Froggy Starlust]

I still have that "Best Five Monkeyboy Albums Ever" which was derived from a Beatles thread which Twister started long ago.

Shall we discuss those albums and Monkey's tremendous career again?

Here it is:

Best 5 Monkeyboy albums ever

Iron Heart (1965)

Iron Heart invented the album-title. Scoff if you will, but as far as pop and rock are concerned, I've yet to find an earlier album with a real album title, leading me to this conclusion. Before Iron Heart there were three kinds of album-titles.

(1) Albums that took their titles directly from a single on the LP (Surfin' Safari, Help!, The Times They Are A-Changin').
(2) Albums that used a play on the artist's name as their title (Beatles For Sale, Another Side Of Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys Today!).
(3) Albums with titles that very simply describe the contents (Live At The Apollo, Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music).

Such was the state of albums in those poor days, a place to keep singles, hoping desperately to sell on the name of it's star and - often - lacking imagination.

And so imagine the revolution when along rode Monkeyboy, five LP's and an astonishing string of hit singles into his career, as he surveyed the album scene, rubbed his chin and thought: "you know what, I reckon this album thing should be more important than it is. Every song on an LP should be rich and worthwhile and an album should have a personality unto itself".

Forget glam, forget punk, forget CD - the biggest revolution in music arrived one day in the mid-sixties when Monkeyboy came up with the idea of "replacing filler with good stuff", thought to himslef "how's about we give the new LP a real name?" and gave birth to the full-length album as a bona-fide art-form.

That Iron Heart also saw fit to push the boundaries of what could be done with the two and a half minute pop track - whether lyrically with tracks like "Sprint To Your Hive" that scream pure jealousy where once "She Loves You" was the norm, or musically with tracks such as "Glaswegian Glass" knocking typical pop expectations off kilter, without sacrificing Monkeyboy's radiant knack for infectious melodies.

Gun (1966)

Along with Pet Sounds, released the same year, Gun is consantly billed, to this day, as the greatest album of all time. With forty years of releases under the bridge it's easy to become cynical about this, but the question to ask yourselves, I think, is where did that reputation come from?

And I think the answer to that is this: Gun tremendously upped the ante for what a five-star 10/10 album was. You're a critic in the 50's, what are you going to give Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry when they come knocking? Compared to their contemporaries they're all 10/10's, right? Same story throughout the early-sixties, no-one else is making pop of "A Soft Week's Day"'s calibre in 1964, are they? 10/10!

So when Gun creeps into the fold, with it's excitingly intoxicating experimentations (best evidenced on "Yesterday Know Well", though much of the album is giddy on it's own experimentation, in more subtle ways), with unflinching soul-searching ("For All", "Fear, Care And Everywhere") coming to the fore when once pop had all been about easy-selling happy sentiments.

Meanwhile the subject matter was also becoming increasingly anti-social and anti-society (Monkey's ode to his drug-dealer "Medic Bob" coming out the year before Reed's "I'm Waiting For The Man", "Maxman" and "I'm Only Weeping" both warning society to back away, and "Alan Or Rick B." offering a hopelessly bleak view of people at large), Gun redefined what a 10/10 album needed to live up to, only eight months after Iron Heart redefined what an album needed to live up to.

Drill Instructor Sugar's Swinger Joint Outfit (1967)

Though everyone's long since grown tired of hearing what's "remarkable" about this album and rebelled against it - to their own loss - the fact remains that all of those things still are remarkable. It's an easier album to write off than it's two immediate predecessors, principally because Monkeyboy had already revolutionised popular music so much in those eight months, but it's claims to the throne are numerous.

Firstly, an often grossly overlooked aspect of Drill Sugar - for this album Monkeyboy came up with the idea of filling the grooves between tracks with music, resulting in a continuous flow throughout each side of vinyl. Without this idea, Dark Side Of The Moon, Diamond Dogs among many others to later utilise the same idea would have looked rather limp indeed - imagine, if you will, an ugly pause between "Sweet Thing" and "Candidate". Now say thank you to Drill Inspector Sugar for ensuring that this didn't happen.

Secondly, though CD listeners are unlikely to appreciate this one, the B-side of the album ended with an inner-groove that would loop a short, nonsensical piece of music for ever. A revolutionary idea that Lou Reed was quick to pounce on for the D-side of Metal Machine Music. It's only a short hop, skip and a jump from these groovy origins to the eventual birth of the 'hidden track', over twenty years later.

Third, the album brought 'concept' to the pop-rock pack, and one only need look at The Kinks and The Who to see how quickly this influence took hold. In retrospect the 'concept' of Sugar's is easily debunked (only Monkeyboy shows any real sign of writing 'in character'), but that's only truly easy to say in the aftermath, now that the idea has been more thoroughly explored. Any way you slice it, Monkeyboy planted the sugar roots seed.

Finally, and most importantly, while Iron Heart bent the rules and Gun broke the rules, Drill Inspector Sugar burned the rules to ash, did a funny little dance, and proclaimed loud and clear "alright folks, you're allowed to put ANYTHING on a pop album". You can play a pitch audible only to dogs, it said. You can pretend to be Drill Instructor Sugar's Swinger Joint Outfit, it said. And in a proclomation similar to heaven itself, Monkeyboy intoned: "the music hall will lie down with the psychedelia, rock, pop and ballads can all get along just fine. And this is okay".

Drill Instructor Sugar's Swinger Joint Outfit gave birth to indie-pop, point blank - Drill Instructor Sugar was the man who said it was okay to be as whimsical, eclectic and damn well nonsensical as you could care to be. It's a regular gay parade.

Inexplicable Weird Travel (1967)

A US-only release at the time, incorporating a UK EP, and a selection of post-Sugar's A-sides and B-sides, Inexplicable Weird Travel finds Monkeyboy on peak form, having liberated pop music with his last three albums, these tracks find him taking advantage of the climate he has cultivated with some of his finest, richest work.

While all the tracks here are good - exciting, intoxicating free-flowing psychedelic pop by the boy who changed the playing field forever, Monkey hogs the highlights with two of his finest songs - "Cherry Meadows Gone" and "He Was A Seal", while album-closer " You Need More Than Love" will never fail to bring a smile to any cynic's face, however much you think you might never want to hear it again.

Record Sans Couleur (1968)

There had been double-albums before - most notably Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde and Donovan's A Gift From A Flower To A Garden - but those albums were, basically, just longer albums. Record Sans Couleur really invented and defined what the double-album is all about.

And what it's all about is the sprawl of it all, the attempt to define yourself as a musical personality by the range of your interests, by the bits and pieces of who you are that would normally never see the light of an LP - whether because they're just too damn experimental ("Mild Mince Pie", "Revisionism 6"), too close to your contemporaries ("Return To Leningrad", "My Rock 'n' Roll"), or just not really up to scratch enough to compete with the first-rate material ("Road Screw", "Bad Morning") - the result a dazzlingly kaleidoscopic snap-shot of Monkeyboy as an entity, more than the sum of his albums or singles. Before Record Sans Couleur the only way to gain such an insight into who your favourite artist really is was by following their career through high and low to the bitter end. Thanks to Monkeyboy, all you have to do now is give the double-album in their catalogue a spin.

Story-songs like "The Short And Abandonned Song Of House Invoice" and "Stoney Stoone" were never going to be tight enough to compete with "He Was A Seal" and "Underwater Percy Sans Pearls" - but who can imagine Monkeyboy without them? No-one who's had the fortune to marvel at Record Sans Couleur , that's for sure.

And I want to believe that a light's shining through somehow

It's cute that they have a list of forum rules. Things like that only motivate the potential trolls. By telling me what I can't do, it's like they're actually providing me with a to-do list.

Forum rules

The rules are few and simple -

Please respect all other members of the forum.

Be mean to people... that's easy.

In reply to:

Do not abuse anyone, unless you want to be banned from the board.

So, since I'm actually expecting to be banned, I'm being encouraged to abuse people. I would have been satisfied with merely mocking them, but hey, if that's what they want...

In reply to:

Do not upload or link to any obscene or copyright material - again, you will be banned from the board.

All you have to do is link to a picture with a copyright and you get banned (not once, but twice - it's like double probation!). That's too easy. I think I'm gonna go with the obscene option.

In reply to:

Please remember, whilst a lot of people these days use swear words as standard, there are still people that find them offensive. Swearing is not banned on this site but please consider other people as well as yourself.

They don't like swearing, but they won't ban you for it? I'd like to see if that's true.

In reply to:

If any of the moderators of this board make a decision - they will not be overridden by admin, other than in (VERY) special circumstances.

Why are they telling me this? Isn't this a rule for the admin and mods?

In reply to:

If you have a complaint to make about another member of the board, please do not do it in public - speak to a moderator or admin and all problems will be resolved in a civilized manner.

Can you imagine TW if all the bickering was limited to the mods' inboxes?!

In reply to:

That's it - enjoy. Told you they were simple!

Just please consider regional differences. Try looking at America as having an EU-type cultural makeup with a false pretense of actual unity and we should be good.

Sure she does. Just like you 'liked' EJ, Mxy &c. in banning them.

One big plus of BowieClone (so named because of the homogeneity of its membership) is that the fora guidelines are very visible. The guidelines themselves are total arse, mind, as is evident through the banning of EJSunday (one of the most pacific and level-headed TWers) after six posts. Indeed, the guidelines are so constraining that it seems that even cold-blooded debating is barred, suggesting that the mods have serious 'issues'. Mix and match the posts and usernames and no one would be able to link post and poster.

Except that Claude still sticks out like a sore penis. Er . . . thumb, sorry.

Anyway, 'Madman', iirc, is female, which may account for the 'issues' I described, and explain why she's so triggerhappy. Perhaps it's that time of the month and she's issuing in abundance?

This reminds me of the Mr. Show opening where David finds out that Bob's Grandpa Timmy is old, thus making Bob "part old," and thus a liability in "the coming age war."

There follows a sketch of a world run by old people, with "nice things, for the nice people" - which includes hard candy dishes at every street corner, mandatory 8 MPH speed limits, and, of course, testicular electrocution for the rapscallions.

Of course, I can't find it on YouTube.

There are a ton of sketches up there, though, including these favorites:

America Blows Up the Moon

EJ etc., if you want a perfect encapsulation of "the American attitude," you won't find one better than this. Unless, maybe, it's one of these:

Worthington's Law and
Rich Guy Ads

The latter of which is possibly only really funny to those familiar with American political ads. And finally, this:

Pre-Taped Call-in Show

Which, for my money, is the most brilliantly conceived and executed sketch in the history of sketch comedy.

Anyway, I could go on linking sketches all day, but if you have a few minutes to dick around on YouTube and for some reason haven't watched Mr. Show before, please do it now.

Nope, it's because she's the Clone known as Sassy – a 38 year old female from the US desperately in need of some attention. Perhaps I was mistaken when I said the Clones were entirely indistinguishable; you can tell them apart by their egregious grammatical errors.

Sassy finds it easier to punctuate her posts with WAH! PLONK! because these cartoon sound effects serve the same purpose as Stu's 'laughtrack', i.e. they highlight where the reader ought to be laughing in an otherwise comedic tundra. Sure, most people outgrow such traits at 38 months, but 'inclusiveness' is the Clone watchword, and Madman will never promote you to global mod by sending hir shots of your snatch alone; you need to talk pretty too.

Tell me, IAWIP, do you look after your mother at home?

True, I was only going off *PLONK*, but maybe the other Clones say *PLONK* too? Perhaps *PLONK* is Clonecode for 'I am a vacuous bint'?

In Praise of TW new [re: White Prism]

On topic, then.

* First up, it's easier to praise TW by saying what TW is not as opposed to what it is. Crucially, I think, TW allows you to post before you are banned. Many message boards the 'net over allow posters to start on a shaky footing, and many posters improve on their humble beginnings, making the somewhat tentative (if not illicit) first post of a career a key make-or-break moment for the future success of a poster. TW is generous in this regard, unlike some shitty fora.

* Aesthetically TW looks good. It's extremely basic and the skins kinda suck, to varying degrees, but we have the no 'pictures in sigs' policy and leetspeak is kept to a minimum, unlike some shitty fora.

* The old guard at TW serves its purpose in driving away annoying newbies and paedophiles who get accidentally washed up in the surf of Collectors' Corner. It's a tough survival of the fittest regime, though those who carefully observe the boards and find their niche are rewarded.

* On to the more positive stuff: The board's alter egos help to provide humorous and cutting edge posting that would likely go censored in most other places. This is a rare sterling quality that acts more as a positive for TW than a negative of other boards. TW is also accommodating to a wide style of posts provided that the posts themselves are of a decent standard. There are regular users who come here for social sparring as well as for more anorak pursuits (*ahem* Q ... u ... o ... t ... , etc.)

* The longevity of the boards provide a wealth of reading. The (very) old guard come and go regularly, meaning that we're never sure who'll turn up on any given day. The collective knowledge of TWers is, as a whole, vast. In-jokes go back years. Personalities are bigger than the moderators, making the mods accountable for their actions (unlike some sh …) etc.

Oh christ . . . I could go on, but I lost the will to live after paragraph two.

I mean, we finally get two noobs in these parts and you guys 'welcome' them like this.

Sure, their site is a little different from ours but, hey, if they'd immediately ostracised Nazi Germany in the 30s just for being different, maybe Hitler wouldn't have got the chance to do something about the Jewish problem.

Then where would we be?

I personally find Hoven and IAWIP to be a breath of fresh air and think we should give them a chance

Maybe we should look at this as a chance to really show ppl from other Bowie communities what TW has to offer and shed our reputation as mean, immature, unfunny (hey, that's what ppl think) rascals.

Maybe we could even get back posters who have left because of the dilapidated state/attitude of a site that used to be great, like Pablo, diamond_dave and the_deuce.

Your posting quota is a very recent development, and it doesn't automatically wipe away the 2+ years prior in which, despite repeated pleas from the Hoi Polloi, you behaved exactly as I said. The point being that you must, by now, know what will make people annoyed with you, but you do it time and again anyway.

For a prime example, see this very thread, where I ask you a simple question and get a nonsensically cryptic remark. I would like to know how this qualifies as berating you.

We are not mean. We choose our friends carefully, that's all.

Admittedly, that was one of your better Diamond_Dave impressions ('ppl'; acting as mediator for peace; lamenting the state of the boards – severely off-topic, btw) but not even Dave was desperate/racist enough to refer to his amatory advances with the locals as drunken 'wild monkey' trips.

But then, you've referred to Japanese people that way before, haven't you?

Sure, their high-pitched, excited, inarticulate whining sounds kinda monkeyish, particularly when you're glugging on their various body parts, but you're there to civilise and train them. Received pronunciation. Sentence Parsing. . . . Feed them samples of incondite Dogzonian English, ask them to correct and punctuate.

Which, incidentally, is why I'm glad you're back. IAWIP could use a few lessons. If I see an improvement, I'll forward you her email.

If Kati really is bothered by being a frequent reference point in mine and a number of other people's jokes about you than I think she can let me know herself. Yeah...I live in a sort of dumpy house with people who eat my food and can't bother to flush the toilet. Oh! It was a metaphor! Alright, let's try this one out:

Living in a tower = I think too highly of myself.
Well it stands to reason that a guy who writes about his *experimentations* with balloons, drinking problems, and - let's face it - clearly unhealthy fetishes for severely-implanted Asian chicks is probably a bit more down to Earth than, say, an asexual homosexual who continues to post with great pride on a board where he is continually berated and treated like shit. If I live in a tower, Dogz, you live in a fantastic gay castle of bright pink bullshit floating on magical clouds of horrible markup in the sky.

however secure it may feel = fairly straightforward in a really strange way
This reeks of a threat. But I've thought about it and I guess if I didn't sincerely think that you will some day go off on a mad killing spree ala Ed Gein, I guess you could be saying that perhaps I feel too secure as a moderately-respected member of the board? I don't know, I think I need more clarification on this "point" of yours.

is hardly a social attribute = has a negative impact on one's social life
Alright, fuck this. You're a retard and a human cancer.

He makes so little sense that I can't even bring the incoherence together in a funny way. It's just a random collection of millesecond thoughts that he connects with (wrong) punctuation to make it seem like a form of communication. But it isn't. It's DogzSpeak. And I really hope Effee comes to her senses some day and proceeds to eat him because we all know that he's too incompetant to fight off that little shit of a dog.

I've always thought that the Coffee Shop name for the board was the greatest analogy. Eight years ago or so, when I first came across this board, that's what TW was, a coffee shop. You could come inside, the guy behind the counter would greet you by name, and even pour you your favorite flavor.

You would sit down at a table, maybe a few friends would even stop in and sit a spell at your table with you and talk the night away, while sipping your coffee.

Then Starbucks came to town and put the little neighborhood Coffee Shop out of business. Being a lover of Coffee (Bowie) you decided to give it a shot. The coffee was good, the place looked good, and the customers were coming in by the dozens.

Then one day you noticed that the quaint little shop had gotten overrun. You had long lines to get in to get your coffee, the guy behind the counter didn't know you from Adam, nor did he care about the coffee that he was pouring.

Looking for a seat you'd find people that had made tables that were available to the general public "their seats" and wouldn't welcome anyone else outside of their clique. If you sat alone and eavesdropped on a conversation, when you threw in your two cents they'd glare at you and tell you to "butt out."

New flavors (albums/tours) stopped coming out, or it was a long time in between new releases. Pretty soon you noticed that something novel was happening in the Starbucks: no one was talking about the coffee anymore. They were talking about tea, or other varieties of drink. It just wasn't the same as the old Coffee Shop.

You still pass by the site where the old Coffee Shop was and let out a sigh to see that it's now a Barnes and Noble. From time to time you take a peek into the Starbucks to see what's going on. Between the vegan muffins and the cd's on the counter, there's almost no signs of coffee. Time to move on with life.

He's such a bitch! new [re: TheDeuce]

Before we begin, I'd like to note that I bear no personal ill-will towards Mr. Two-hole, but I'm trying to follow this, and it ain't going well.

In reply to:

I've always thought that the Coffee Shop name for the board was the greatest analogy.

See, good analogies, let alone great ones, should have a consistent throughline by which a person can tell what it is you're trying to say exactly, and this one goes off track pretty damned fast.

In reply to:

Eight years ago or so, when I first came across this board, that's what TW was, a coffee shop. You could come inside, the guy behind the counter would greet you by name, and even pour you your favorite flavor. You would sit down at a table, maybe a few friends would even stop in and sit a spell at your table with you and talk the night away, while sipping your coffee.

OK, I'm with you so far. TW is the shop, the threads are the tables, and your friends are the posters who come talk on your threads. What fun!

In reply to:

Then Starbucks came to town and put the little neighborhood Coffee Shop out of business. Being a lover of Coffee (Bowie) you decided to give it a shot. The coffee was good, the place looked good, and the customers were coming in by the dozens.

So Starbucks = Bowienet? Good analogy, I'm with you still. Except that TW is still "in business," no?

In reply to:

Then one day you noticed that the quaint little shop had gotten overrun. You had long lines to get in to get your coffee, the guy behind the counter didn't know you from Adam, nor did he care about the coffee that he was pouring.

Uh...you're losing me. I thought the little coffee shop was out of business, but now you're saying it's overrun with people? Or is that Starbucks/Bowienet? Do the mods there not care about Bowie/Coffee either? Or else we're still talking about TW here, in which case I'm guessing "long lines" = Oops! messages? Ok, that's good too.

In reply to:

Looking for a seat you'd find people that had made tables that were available to the general public "their seats" and wouldn't welcome anyone else outside of their clique. If you sat alone and eavesdropped on a conversation, when you threw in your two cents they'd glare at you and tell you to "butt out."

Well shit, if I were at a coffee shop with my friends and some weirdo started butting into our conversation from the next table, I'd do the same thing! That aside, I'm pretty sure we're talking about TW again (you can tell because of the word "clique"), in which case I'd have to ask folks like Froggy, Vanessa, and any other relatively recent joiners how many times they've been asked to leave.

In reply to:

New flavors (albums/tours) stopped coming out, or it was a long time in between new releases. Pretty soon you noticed that something novel was happening in the Starbucks: no one was talking about the coffee anymore. They were talking about tea, or other varieties of drink. It just wasn't the same as the old Coffee Shop.

So if TW (which I'm now pretty sure is Starbucks) stops selling new coffee (i.e. talking about Bowie albums), isn't that the fault of the corporate office (Bowie)? Isn't it better that we still have tea and crumpets to keep us interested, rather than just shutting the whole place down?

In reply to:

You still pass by the site where the old Coffee Shop was and let out a sigh to see that it's now a Barnes and Noble. From time to time you take a peek into the Starbucks to see what's going on. Between the vegan muffins and the cd's on the counter, there's almost no signs of coffee.

I don't think Barnes & Noble would allow tubgirl posters plastered all over their walls, but hey, let's run with it - B&N is a pretty wide-ranging shop, with most of them stocking books, music, periodicals, and, yes, Starbucks, and they're all more than happy to let you laze around in their comfy chairs doing nothing all day. Which is actually not a terrible analogy (by these standards) for the all-inclusive, all-encompassing nature of TW, except that instead of being bought out by a major corporation, it's like the little Coffee Shop you rememeber was turned into a co-op run by it's best customers.

And you know what a smart co-op does when their coffee supplier craps out? They open the doors to tea and shortbread and everything else, and they let their customers dictate the discourse. Hell, they don't even mind it when the old fart caffeine addicts periodically stick their head in the door to complain about all the fun the co-op kids are having.

TW is what we've made it, every last one of us, and I for one am pretty damned proud of the whole lot.

Oh yeah, and we still have plenty of coffee, but our baristas are entitled to make fun of the customers if they order orange mochalattes.

Thanks.

It's cute that they have a list of forum rules. Things like that only motivate the potential trolls. By telling me what I can't do, it's like they're actually providing me with a to-do list.

In reply to:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forum rules

The rules are few and simple -

Please respect all other members of the forum.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be mean to people... that's easy.

In reply to:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do not abuse anyone, unless you want to be banned from the board.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, since I'm actually expecting to be banned, I'm being encouraged to abuse people. I would have been satisfied with merely mocking them, but hey, if that's what they want...

In reply to:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do not upload or link to any obscene or copyright material - again, you will be banned from the board.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All you have to do is link to a picture with a copyright and you get banned (not once, but twice - it's like double probation!). That's too easy. I think I'm gonna go with the obscene option.

In reply to:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please remember, whilst a lot of people these days use swear words as standard, there are still people that find them offensive. Swearing is not banned on this site but please consider other people as well as yourself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They don't like swearing, but they won't ban you for it? I'd like to see if that's true.

In reply to:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If any of the moderators of this board make a decision - they will not be overridden by admin, other than in (VERY) special circumstances.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why are they telling me this? Isn't this a rule for the admin and mods?

In reply to:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have a complaint to make about another member of the board, please do not do it in public - speak to a moderator or admin and all problems will be resolved in a civilized manner.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can you imagine TW if all the bickering was limited to the mods' inboxes?!

In reply to:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's it - enjoy. Told you they were simple!

Shame on you, Arlequino, for impugning the rational folks over at BowieZone. It wasn't something that EJ wrote on this thread that got him banned, it was something Mxy wrote, and EJ laughed at!

Later this week, I'll be pre-emptively banned from BowieZone because someone I knew in high school once described Bowie as "not that great" about 8 years back, and I didn't disagree with him forcefully enough.

(tozzpots) It was decided by the site administrator to ban anyone from this thread who were agreeing that this was a good idea.

Except that wasn't in the original BowieZone rules, was it? Perhaps you need an extra clause stating that anyone found mocking BowieZone on a completely different site, regardless to whether their intention was humorous or not (the subjectivity of humour, I imagine, being far too difficult to legislate for), despite having been a member for some time (as EJ had) and only contributing posts of a non-malicious nature (which EJ did), will be banned.

Why don't the BZoners admit that they overreacted and screwed up? No credible message board, official or unofficial, Bowie or otherwise, bans members before they've even posted on the premise of a single post made by a single poster of a completely different site.* BowieZone, I admit, is a new site and the Mods there are probably very inexperienced and keen, although they really ought to gauge the (non)presence of Admin staff on other sites to see how to take jokes and different posters' styles in their stride. BZ is a now a laughing stock and its moderators revealed as illiterate and draconian.

* And before you reply, predictably, with a lame 'But EJ agreeeed!' retort, I posit that EJ was agreeing the absurdity of the rules and Mxy's debunking of them as opposed to his vowing to attack your site. Indeed, your forum rules are so vague and woolly ('abuse'? Copyright of pictures?) that any poster with a vocabulary greater than five words would probably unintentionally break those rules within their first 10 posts.

Well, if nothing else, I guess I admire the personal nature of the response there. For a balanced TW reply (as opposed to the half a bottle of wine flavoured one that I might give), I'd direct you to Prism's really-rather-sensible post. It's hard to say you got it wrong, but it will win you a whole lot more respect in the long term.

Completely aside from the Bowiezone argument, I feel that with university, school, working and gap yearing stuff, I've experienced and met an interesting cross-section of society. In all of this, I don't think I've ever met somebody as singularly worthless as dogz. Seriously - worthless. Dogz, just to avoid confusion, that isn't a compliment. 'k?

Was it? Let's look at the evidence:

- That post was made at 10/04/06 01:42 AM. Go back to page 4 of this topic, you can see for yourself.
- The post in which I announced my banning, complete with a screen capture to prove it, was made at 10/04/06 01:45 AM. That's three minutes after I made the post in which I mocked Bozone.

It's impossible for Bozone's mods to have banned me for the reason you claim, unless they stay up at night reading every new post that pops up here at TAWLF. It's much more likely that the reason for my banning was the username I chose, "Cuntman" (which I registered a few minutes before submitting the controversial post).

But then again, that's also impossible, since Bozone's forum rules clearly state: "Swearing is not banned on this site".

Re: There's nothing like TW! new [re: EJ]

In reply to:

I got the classic American responses…

“Responses” – you mean there’s more than one? But of course there is – let’s see:

Response 1: Go in with all guns blazing (literally) and take out everyone in the cafeteria. Shoot self.
Response 2: Let the boys go, tie up the girls and shoot them. Shoot self.
Response 3: Have a burger. Go in with all guns blazing (literally) and take out everyone in the cafeteria. Have another burger. Shoot self.
Response 4: Have a burger. Let the boys go, tie up the girls and shoot them. Have another burger. Shoot self.

Obviously there can be other variations, probably involving "soda" and/or "root beer". "Burger" could also be interchangeable with any of the other three American food groups: hot dog, pizza or taco.

I'm pretty much begging to have my ass kicked. new [re: 96dbFreak]

Stu:
A Review

After months of searching, I think I've finally found an upside to all these recent school shootings: more fodder for the Stu comedy mill. Yes, it seems that by combining his contempt for all humanity with a topical "hot-button" issue, Stu has finally come up with a solution. And that solution is laughter.

A particularly subtle touch is the way he once again mentions burgers when making fun of Americans (his favourite target). Stu understands that every good comedian needs a trademark, and with the simple image of the burger, that undying staple of the American diet (something Stu has undoubtedly researched meticulously), he's hit on a surefire way of identifying himself for decades to come, or at least until he dies. Which, I might add, should be pretty soon. He's really old and probably has cancer or something.

Also worth noting is his attention to detail and accuracy. Clearly, Stu had done his homework. One can almost see him taking notes as he watches reports on CNN, chuckling to himself as he turns pain and tragedy into pure comedic gold. This perceptive, journalistic eye is the sign of a good writer, and though he probably won't be remembered by anyone until long after his death (which, like I said, should be really soon), his memory wil go on and on and on, much like his famous arguments with absolutely anyone who didn't find him funny.

You know, when I read about that Amish school shooting in the paper, the first thing I thought to myself was: I wonder how Stu's gonna make this funny? Well, I now have my answer, and am much richer for it. Thank you, Stu.

Re: I'm pretty much begging to have my ass kicked. new [re: schizophrenic]

You're welcome. You know, if you put "Americans have no sense of irony" into Google you get 872 references for that phrase. Strangely, most of the links are to writings that attempt to refute that assertion.

5 results for: irony

–noun, plural -nies.

1.the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.

2.Literature.

a. a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated as in “I’m American and I understand irony, now pass me that burger before I shoot you”

b. (esp. in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., esp. as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.

3.SOCRATIC IRONY.

4.DRAMATIC IRONY.

5.an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

6.the incongruity of this.

7.an objectively sardonic style of speech or writing.

8.an objectively or humorously sardonic utterance, disposition, quality, etc.

—Synonyms 1, 2. IRONY, SARCASM, SATIRE indicate mockery of something or someone. The essential feature of IRONY is the indirect presentation of a contradiction between an action or expression and the context in which it occurs. In the figure of speech, emphasis is placed on the opposition between the literal and intended meaning of a statement; one thing is said and its opposite implied, as in the comment, “Beautiful weather, isn't it?” made when it is raining or nasty. Ironic literature exploits, in addition to the rhetorical figure, such devices as character development, situation, and plot to stress the paradoxical nature of reality or the contrast between an ideal and actual condition, set of circumstances, etc., frequently in such a way as to stress the absurdity present in the contradiction between substance and form. IRONY differs from SARCASM in greater subtlety and wit. In SARCASM ridicule or mockery is used harshly, often crudely and contemptuously, for destructive purposes. It may be used in an indirect manner, and have the form of irony, as in “What a fine musician you turned out to be!” or it may be used in the form of a direct statement, “You couldn't play one piece correctly if you had two assistants.” The distinctive quality of SARCASM is present in the spoken word and manifested chiefly by vocal inflection, whereas SATIRE and IRONY, arising originally as literary and rhetorical forms, are exhibited in the organization or structuring of either language or literary material. SATIRE usually implies the use of irony or sarcasm for censorious or critical purposes and is often directed at public figures or institutions, conventional behavior, political situations, etc.

You know, I don’t think it’s true that Americans have no sense of irony. Why, here you are taking me to task for having a callous attitude to the multitude of deaths caused by the inadequacy of America’s gun laws, while at the same time wishing me a swift death. Now isn’t that ironic? Or is it an attempt at satire? Or is it just that your screen name describes your mental state and the prime characteristic of your posts?

Apart from the fact that it is pretty unclear who agreed to what in this thread your idea of pre-emptive banning only goes to show what I suspected after first posting in the 9/11 thread there: persecution complex.
