Tolerance new [re: Dogz]

Commercial:

It's stupid. I doubt the intent was to show violence towards homosexuals but now that I've read that article my brain has been forever poisoned.

Sort of like when someone I know was really bothered that King Kong "was totally about" the follies of interracial romance and how wrong it was that the big monkey died in the end. I really doubt that was the actual intent (especially of the remake), but now that the idea is in my head that's the way I will always see it. Even if the original intent was harmless, their own preconceived notions about how the world must work infected mine in a fairly effective way.

So fuck you all. Let me have my fun, you assholes. (The fact that this coincides with another current conversation is totally unintentional on my part.)

Bareback Mounting new [re: 96dbFreak]

Well, let's face it, cock-smoking is a self-detrimental habit that can lead to great bodily peril and early death. We need to nip this thing in the bud....

In addition, I think the ad is pretty stupid, too. And, I disagree with Beckham that the chest hair thing is funny... What's the logic behind that joke? I mean, I always assumed that the yen for a smooth, hairless chest was widely considered to be a big pink flag on the horizon of sexual ambiguity.

It would make more sense to me if after this desperate show of masculinity, they fucked.

Also, I think the GLBT should totally hire Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal to reenact the commercial as I have instructed - to counter the Snickers ad.

Gay groups protest Super Bowl commercial new [re: Monkeyboy]

I just read that folks are complaining that the new Snickers ad that ran during the Super Bowl is homophobic. OMG! How pathetic. It's funny, I laughed. It does nothing to make gays and lesbians look bad, it only makes the rednecks look stupid.

Snickers not sorry new [re: Dogz]

Snickers not sorry

It seems that if Snickers were after controversy, press and publicity- they got it. Their Super bowl advert which featured two men accidentally kissing continues to draw accusations of homophobia and possible incitement to anti-gay violence.

It seems that the US is currently enjoying the kind of cultural debate which the UK experienced as part of the Jade Goody/Shilpa Shetty saga. You can watch the advert, and judge for yourself by clicking here

Despite the advert being withdrawn, it can still be viewed on YouTube- and continues to divide opinion. Some believe the advert highlights the macho stupidity of working class straight men and that the gay community is being oversensitive to a lighthearted joke.

Understandably, there’s a growing contingent who believe the advert reinforces the idea that two men kissing is a revolting incident that can only be offset by violence.

Many critics have posited the suggestion that had the advert featured a cross-racial kiss- which then inspired equally drastic reactions, there would be no doubt in anybody’s mind that Snickers were in the wrong, and at the very least should apologise profusely.

Masterfoods spokeswoman sounded far from contrite: "As with all of our Snickers advertising, our goal was to capture the attention of our core Snickers consumer, primarily 18-to-24-year-old adult males," Alice Nathanson told the New York Times in a statement.

"Feedback from our target consumers has been positive, and many media and Web site commentators on this year’s Super Bowl lineup ranked the commercial among this year’s best."

"We know that humour is highly subjective and we understand that some consumers have found the commercial offensive," Nathanson told The Times, adding: "Clearly that was not our intent. We do not plan to continue the ad on television or on our Web site."

In that video, one of the producers of the commercial could be heard telling Bears tight end Desmond Clark that it took 50 takes of the two men kissing for them to get it right.

Several gay bloggers have called for a boycott of Mars brands. Both the Human Rights Campaign, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the Matthew Shepard Foundation have joined the chorus of disapproval.

Giuliano said that in early January, TBWAChiatDay, the New York ad agency that produced the commercial asked GLAAD to review and provide analysis on a Snickers spot. GLAAD agreed, he said but the next day, the agency abruptly withdrew its request without having shown it to GLAAD.

"The makers of Snickers and it's parent company at Mars should know better," said Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese.

"This type of jeering from professional sports figures at the sight of two men kissing fuels the kind of anti-gay bullying that haunts countless gay and lesbian school children on playgrounds all across the country.

Eighty-four percent of GLBT students report being verbally harassed at school, and this type of ad only reinforces that," said Solmonese.

"I am outraged that Mars, the NFL and these players would promote such an anti-gay message," said Judy Shepard, Executive Director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

"This campaign encourages the same type of hate that led to the death of my son Matthew ... In particular, I am dismayed that these players, who are role models to our young people, would participate in perpetuating such discrimination and prejudice.

Snickers is the best selling chocolate bar of all time and has annual global sales of $2 billion (£1.1). If you eat a lot of them, especially if they're deep- fried, you might get fat.

That's kind of the point. It makes the rednecks look stupid, but it also seems to suggest that this is okay. I doubt they are trying to say the ad reflects poorly on Gays - merely, it perpetuates the idea that "Gay is baaad," and reacting to homosexuality with anger and violence is acceptable and even comical to the general public.. when it apparently is not.
