The misuse of TW

Twister & Ziggfried did it for ages and for the past few months, Dara, has been at it - I'm talking about logging in here to solely use the place for private messages.

Ever heard of email accounts you arseholes?

The only use of TW

Come, come now, if Bowie were to release a really good album, or even a shite one, there would surely be a flurry of activity on these, dare I say, hallowed boards? As a consequence there would be an influx of fresh ideas & discussion which would hopefully entice people into creating blockbuster threads akin to those of yesteryear.

My grandfather on my mothers side, who would often place a round of bread on the end of a long fork & make toast in front of an open fire, use to say "Both the blind man & deaf man can feel their way through touch, but the deaf man has the advantage because he can actually see."

Who am I to question the integrity of a man who went AWOL in the first Great War & used nettle-rash as an excuse?

The last time I remember this happening on the release of a new album we (or a certain someone) was threatened with a lawsuit. *ahemdukewhiteahem*

But I was being facetious, of course. PMs aren't the only use of TW; it also has a very handy file attachment service that allows external linking.

I think that many long-term posters are like-minded and have gotten too familiar with one another - but it's more a case of familiarity nurturing staleness than it is one of familiarity breeding contempt - too many people have got pally along the way and become non-confrontational which has lead them to harp on monotonically for fear of upsetting their favourites, even agreeing to disagree with a smiley at the end of their posts despite their true beliefs on any given topic.

Once more, with feeling (and finality) new [re: Auntie Prism]

As is her talent, WildWind summed it up. In what I believe are the dying embers of my relationship with TW, I still read a select few posters, I still answer PMs, but I never see anything in a post that makes me want to respond. That's down more to me than your collective inability to provoke me into response.

Was a time when I'd have rushed to explain to Strawman and Claude why exactly the Catholic church are against homosexuality (and how they are not at all hypocritical from their own narrow doctrinarian viewpoint, unlike the more progressive churches who bend and sway to shifting popular opinion), or to rebut WildWind's outrageous dismissal of the noble art of boxing purely on the basis of a Sly Stallone flick (though I must admit that having just seen Rambo 2 again last night, I'm now even more against the war on terror), but no mas. I simply can't be arsed these days.

I could and undoubtedly should leave it in that nutshell, and those who agree with that last bit should probably skip ahead to the final Slan or at least the paragraph just before, but for those who want to wallow one last time in my trademarked self important longwindedness, I won't.

I always wondered if I would know that my final ever post here would be my final ever post here when I clicked the Submit button. When I made my last post here almost a year ago, I had no idea that it would be, or the reasons why it might be. Those reasons have become clearer with time.

First, and probably most importantly, I went through a number of lifestyle changes that turned what probably started as a desire for a temporary break into a more permanent kicking of habit. Most of my friends here already know about these, and the rest of you don't need to know, so I'll leave it at that.

Second, what I initially saw as minor annoyances that warranted a short break from here crystallised in my mind into more serious concerns that made me question the wisdom of continuing to post. From the start of my public life here at TW in the mid 90s, I have always been among the most open about my real life. I never felt the need to conceal myself behind a constructed online persona, or a protective armour of irony. I never even felt the need to use any name other than the one my mother gave me, to disguise my location or personal circumstances, and my personal email address was available to all. For the first 9 or 10 years, I never had any cause to regret any of those decisions, but in more recent years, I have. The old daraok@iol.ie email address that was the receptacle of missives from thousands of Bowie fans and luminaries in the Bowie world is no more, and I will not be publicising my new email address.

The rules of acceptability at TW were always open not only to debate, but to debunking and destruction. It has always been the case that everyone decides for themselves what the rules are, and must decide if they can live with those of others. This was never a problem for me, and never caused me to hold back or curb my desire for self exposition. I also talked openly about friends and loved ones. In my early years here, that was a decision I felt I could make, because I never spoke ill of any of them, and they were not online themselves and therefore not in a position to be offended by the responses of others. That changed in recent years as my loved ones not only got online, but also got some enjoyment from reading my posts here and at the other places I bore for Ireland, and the responses they provoked. However, towards the end of my posting career here, I became aware of some responses that I would never feel comfortable about my loved ones having to read. They never did read them, because the person who made them posted them in what I'm sure was a justified fit of pique towards me quickly repented and removed the posts in question. So quickly that I would not have been aware of them myself had not a concerned friend in another time zone sent me the screen captures. But once I did become aware of them, and had satisfied myself that they had been made by the person in question, it became obvious to me that I could no longer live happily under the new rules. I also understood that as long as I continued to post here, I would provoke these occasional fits of pique, and more importantly my loved ones would continue to read these boards and eventually have to come face to face with a post that would cause them genuine hurt, so I knew it was time to leave and stay away.

I don't want to lay all the responsibility for this decision at the feet of one person. Collectively TW changed, as it had to. The other places I still happily frequent (one for even longer than I spent at TW) changed too, but remain places where I can feel perfectly comfortable with being myself. The reasons for these changes are deeper than the people who are left here. The reality is that as of right now, David Bowie is effectively retired. That leaves TW with no real raison d'etre other than as a place for people to meet and pick at each other's scabs and mores. A party may be about the people at the party, but as soon as the booze dries up, the best people always start to leave. In my student days, I was usually the last to leave a party, which always left me leaving on a downer. These days, I try to leave as soon as most of the best people have left. Many of the best of the best are still here, and as long as Monkeyboy, Beltene, LadyMacbeth, RabbitFighter, JarethsGirl and one or two others continue to post here, I'll almost certainly continue to read. I've enjoyed the posts of everyone here: it's just that for most of you, I have the same feeling I imagine you have of me: that you've already read everything I'm ever likely to say, several times over. So if you're not on that list, don't feel left out. It's just that those are the only people who still post things I don't expect them to.

I think it's common knowledge that this place is dying, and that lack of newbies is the death sentence. Ultimately, that's more down to David Bowie and his effective retirement than anyone here. But let me say this. It's not productive to bemoan the absence of new blood to savage, if everyone bales in together on the savagery when by some miracle new blood does wander in. The way this thing has always worked is that for every ten or twelve people who get their kicks for the hazings, there must be at least one poster with genuine clout willing to extend a friendly arm around the heaving shoulders of the beleaguered newbie and tell them, "There, there. It's just their way of saying hello. Don't be afraid to bite back, it's what they're waiting for". When I got here, a lady called Hel performed this function, and I took it over from her for a while when she got tired of it. If by some miracle Bowie releases a killer new album that brings in a flood of newbies but fails to reignite my desire to post, please bear this in mind. Perhaps you already know this, but perhaps not. The only person here I'm convinced does realise this is Monkeyboy, who was always the most warm hearted and self aware of the feral newbie baiting tribe.

So, let's leave it there for now. I do intend this to be my last post, and if it is, I take almost as much pride from managing to kick the habit just in time before I got a custom title foisted on me as I do from never having had an avatar. But there's always the happy possibility that some great new Bowie doing will bring me back to here rather than Little Wonderworld. There's also the sad possibility that I won't be able to resist a response if someone comes up with a more provocative response to this than "God that was long. Thank goodness you're gone, whoever you were". I will go on answering my PMs here for as long as I keep coming here to read a few posts here and there, but I promise to gradually shift to email. So feel free to PM me if you want to find out what I really thought about you, or tell me what you really thought about me, or find out who my most secret TW crush was all these years, or anything else, or just want my new email address to leave open the possibility of mailing me at some future point when you simply must know what position Telling Lies got to in Latvia, before I drift off into the ether and become nothing more than a figment of the senile inaccurate memories of others. Since I am departing this long running online soap opera, I feel I can be much franker than my track record might suggest. Oh, and if you're one of the many attractive ladies here and you do want that email address, nawtee pictures always work as the perfect inducememt with me.

I love you all, even those I have loathed in cowardly secrecy.

Slan daoibh go leir go foill,

Within the above paragraph you just did, effectively. And you're a cunt for doing so - any remarks I made about you or your family members were far less damaging & mean-spirited than stating that ones main reasons for quitting was down to a particular poster - especially when the person pointing the finger has always been hugely respected and is safe in the knowledge that people will hang on his every word.

I've been sitting here wondering what the heck is your reasoning for wanting to take me out of TW with you in your final post, and I just came to the conclusion you must genuinely despise me.

For fuck's sake, for the millionth time, it wasn't solely on the basis of accidentally catching a few minutes of Rocky III on TV that I decided I didn't like boxing; that incident just reminded me how vile I thought boxing was.

FWIW, my opinion changed a bit due to the thread discussion. I'm pretty sure my objection is actually to the spectacle of American prizefighting and the way it's practiced rather than to the entirety of the sport of boxing, especially as it's practiced elsewhere. I learned from the thread that in other countries, it's not as much of a billion-dollar industry where promoters get rich by pitting underprivileged people against one another in a human dogfight as it is in the States.

There's a productive thread 'round here every now and then.

nutshell new [re: theidiot2]

You guys are making this too complicated. The fact of the matter is simple: Dara left because WildWind developed an aversion to professional boxing, which she did because Strawman had sent Dara some screen captures in a PM asking him how Telling Lies charted in Latvia. As a result, Dara created his alters Monkeyboy, Beltene, LadyMacbeth, RabbitFighter and JarethsGirl, which, however, was a good thing, but since we all confused Rocky 2 with Rocky 3 and are prejudiced against homosexuals, Dara is still leaving in order to protect his kids, who may otherwise develop an aversion towards professional boxing and, more importantly, tell their mum who his secret TW crush is. I'm not sure whether this was before or after Dara underwent a total change of lifestyle, becoming a devout catholic and prejudiced against homosexuals. As a result he lost the password to his old e-mail address and he tried to get a new one but his Latvian internet provider was telling lies, and he doesn't want his family to know he is receiving nawtee pictures.
Meanwhile, nobody is comforting the newbies and we still don't know how Rocky 2 charted in Latvia.

The steps we need to take in order to get Dara back are the following:
* Explain to him the difference between Rocky 2 and Rocky 3.
* The Catholic church must adopt a consistent viewpoint against homosexuality.
* Ban professional boxing.
* Send porn and pictures of our nobs to Dara's new, secret e-mail address.
* Create a forum for discussing Latvian charts.

The second law of thermodynamics new [re: Dara]

Topics are becoming terser. When the Favourite Bowie Album Poll was revitalized this week, no one made a serious attempt to pitch albums against each other. Instead we had replies a couple of words long, and jokes about inverted commas. We were actually grateful that theidiot made the poll, because we could interact anonymously while still feeling we were making an important contribution to TW.

Actually, now would be a good time to revisit topics, to see how much more quickly we could reach the conclusion of threads if we were to cut out all the flummery and verbiage. We could forgo premises, too, and just hurl insults; and this would be perfectly acceptable because we'd already know were we each stood and why. . . .

I'm still looking for the perfect post. Armed with our back catalogue of knowledge, I suspect that posts will become increasingly profound as they become shorter. Eventually, intentionally or unintentionally, someone will summarize the whole TW Experience in a single paragraph . . . and then a sentence . . . and then a word.

And that word will probably be 'Claude'.
