Yay! User Registration Fixed! new [re: ]

Heh. Not really. Don't be silly.

It's been 3 years, 1 month since registration broke, viz. the 'work around' method of claiming that you 'forgot' your password. Registration proper broke well before that.

For a time I thought that having a 'closed community' was actually a good thing, since it prevented the nutters and Dogz spin-offs infecting our space. But the special volume of crap that Dogz produced was the product of a very ill mind; TW worked pretty well before that.

Evan, ever beneficent and ever merciful, appears generous enough to keep TW running for the sake of its users, as a place where they can occasionally reunite. However, there becomes a point where board activity is so low that the frequency of users' visits diminishes: if there are no incentives for people to return, they naturally move on. In other words, to keep TW alive as a meeting place, it may be necessary to open its doors again.

As it stands, the board languishes in a kind of Terri Schiavo-vegetation, neither quite alive nor dead, with the promise of a similar seven-year court case, in which Dogz wrangles for the ownership rights.

A couple of practical concerns:

1) Evan is a very busy man with big responsibilities: the reports of numerous superhuman feats of his rescuing of babies from blazing car wreckages, etc. are well-documented on the board. I know nothing of the mechanics of TW's registration process, but I guess it would require a couple of hours work at the most. This level of attention over a three year period isn't that demanding.

2) Much generic message board software nowadays uses Captcha or similar to prevent spammers infiltrating the forum. I am not sure, however, if this would be a concern for TW because a) I think the particular board software TW uses is not that popular (IIRC), b) board registration is bizarrely interlinked with the main site. I don't know if these points would deflect spammers or not. If not, obviously much more work would be involved and I understand the reluctance to fix it.

Re: Yay! User Registration Fixed! new [re: Auntie Prism]

Funny enough, Auntie, I was about to post a couple questions regarding this site.

1) I've been off the TW radar for a bit, so what really happened to Evan - do we really know?

^- I guess this is my main question...

2) This is not to sound ill of everyone and I do thank Evan for keeping us alive, but how many people do frequent this site on a regular basis anymore? The main question I am seeing from various people is, how are we still standing? I've seen only a handful of "regulars" post the past couple days; does that mean the oldies have finally given up as well? Is no one into the old bantering anymore? Or has all the anons and spam spawns ruined it?

3) I think you have a point regarding the captchas, but the way the technology is going, I think one day captchas will be void because spammers will get a way round it.

4) And on the subject of linking things (registration, ect), do you really think because we've lost so many people over the years, it might make fixing easier? I know nothing about the workings of sites, but my thinking is it would make it harder to fix because so many people dropped off, and trolling thru the current wreckage might take time to see who actually is still round. I could be wrong and welcome someone saying I'm wrong.

5) We can't edit our posts anymore? Just delete them? (once we've submitted them to the thread)

6) Since we can't edit our registrations and all that on the main fan registry, I suppose our mail is still going to when people had their TW email (like myself - my reg is still under my TW logins). What happened to that? Bigmailbox go under, or is that something we can't do anymore? (not that I remember the pw) I used to like giving out my teenagewildlife email address. Made people ask me whether or not I'm doing porn. Kinda funny.

Ta.

I'm game

I went to a restaurant that serves 'breakfast at any time'. So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.

I can't answer any of these questions. new [re: Patches]

In reply to:

1) I've been off the TW radar for a bit, so what really happened to Evan - do we really know?

I guess Adam or K would be the ones who know, as they are at least in (very) occasional contact with him. They probably only discuss basic admin stuff, though.

In reply to:

2) does that mean the oldies have finally given up as well? Is no one into the old bantering anymore?

Kinda. Which oldies were you hoping to see? I think most activity between the oldies these days, if they still visit at all, is carried out through PMs. As for bantering, TW seems much mellower these days than it used to be, i.e. both less confrontational and less creative.

In reply to:

3) captchas

Yeah, you're right. I can't see Evan introducing captchas any time soon. I can't answer question 4.

In reply to:

5) We can't edit our posts anymore? Just delete them? (once we've submitted them to the thread)

Again, that's because part of the software has been corrupted somewhere. We are supposed to be able to edit our posts, although maybe we can ask K or Adam what kind of things Evan has suggested he is willing or unwilling to repair. It may be that Evan has told them only to contact him in the event of a cataclysmic board failure (Ooops! messages, or being unable to log-in). As it happens, I think several things need urgent attention.

In reply to:

TW email

I never used it myself, but I believe that died years ago.

Bizarrely, the 'old' TW message board seems to be working okay, although it chiefly consists of a guy called Ess Bee talking to himself.

Re: I can't answer any of these questions. new [re: Auntie Prism]

In regards to Adam and K having contact with Evan, at least there is some communication going, even if it is admin stuff. I just was curious as to what had happened to Evan; never really understood the idea of why Mr. Torrie left to begin with (was there a reason besides his illness?).

I remember a time when the boards were filled with people chatting about. Whether it was relevant to the site or not. People like Ruskie, Dukewhite, Beckie (she and Mark were room mates at one point), Etheraldawn (or whatever it was – Frank… also from NY, friends with Mark and Beckie), Kristinmachina… people that were around several years ago… before the site went down hill. I’ve noticed there’s been a bit of a loss for creativity. Looks like I missed a lot!

No worries about captchas and question 4… just thinking out loud.

It sucks that somewhere, somehow the software has been corrupted. Maybe Evan is waiting for us all to piss off completely before he shuts the site down for good. Who knows. But at least we’re still here for the moment!

I know the TW email died about 5 years ago or so. Bigmailbox went under or something, and it dominoed to everyone who used it. just sad for the people who had the accounts and registered with it… like my email in my fan registry says abe11825 at teenagewildlife dot com. I changed my name over to Patches a few years ago and at that point, I think it was when the email server went south.

Wow, never realized there was an old board… interesting!

I’m not asking for much… just some random thoughts about the site. Maybe I missed the thread(s) about the whys and whens. Just when I saw your post, I figured I’d ask. Appreciate the time you put in to respond though and I understand you don’t have the reasons. I thank you! They are still better then nothing!

For the record, the last time I communicated with Evan was in 2002. Since I became the admin I have not once communicated with him and I do not even have his contact information. Whether Adam has been in contact with him I do not know.

Oh wow, K, 9 years? That's kind of worrying because people like you and Adam are (for lack of better phrasing) Running the site (as well as other admins or mods). But like I said, it was just random thoughts and questions since I've come back. I'm not looking for definitive / set in stone information. Things maybe other people can help me with.

Right ho, Squiffy! Bally Jerry, pranged his kite right in the How's-Your-Father. Harry Blighter, dicky-birdied, feathered back on his Sammy, took a waspy, flipped over on his Betty Harper's and caught his can in the Bertie.

Re: Yay! User Registration Fixed! new [re: Auntie Prism]

Regarding captchas, they are actually something I've been thinking that should be implemented (alas, that cannot be done by the resources avaiable to an admin which are actually fairly limited) as the would make it possible to open anonymous/unregistered commenting again which would be a possibly way to work around the problem of registration not working, since registration is not nescessary to post anonymously. However, without captchas or another equivalent system the boards would be flooded with spam.

And in any case, changes made to the message board (even if they were possible) will be of little to no help unless the main site is brought up to date again. Few people will feel inclined to visit the message board of a website that's last been updated in 2003 and as such even if registration was fixes we'd likely be stuck with the same old users (plus maybe a bunch of new Dogz alters).
