Heathen- another unclear concept? new

Speaking of the Heathen, Bowie said he "has no mental light, he destroys everything he touches, and has no presence of God in his life."

Yet when one reads the lyric to this title track, the ideas are vague and unclear. This theme does not exist. There are no imaginative ideas, only cliches.

It seems like another case of Bowie finding a "cool" word and letting his fans find hidden meanings that are not there.

I sometimes get the feeling that Bowie secretly laughs at us behind our back.

My thoughts exactly.

Though I don't think Bowie is laughing at us behind our backs. If anything, I think he's crying because he doesn't have much to say.

Firstly, I don't think we can expect the track to be anything like "Future Legend / Diamond Dogs" or "Leon Take Us Outside / Outside". Those tracks were at the beginning of two very concept heavy albums. Where as this comes at the end.

By this stage of the album, it is fairly typical that Bowie exhausts the specifics, and leaves us with something more general.

Are people crystal clear on what happens at the end of Ziggy or Diamond Dogs or 1.Outside?

Probably not. That is what makes us listen again.

If anything, I find "Heathen (The Rays)" to have a slightly clearer ending than most Bowie albums.

Re: Heathen- another unclear concept? new [re: Adam]

I read one interview with Bowie and Eno (don't remember at the moment where it was, though), where Bowie repeated several times that he is a quite bad conceptualist as opposed to Eno. Eno was trying to ensure him otherwise, though.

But as I understand, what Bowie really meant with it was that in reality most of the time he works quite spontaneously, and not at all in such a calculating fashion as we sometimes presume. But this may also mean that it can be hard for him to think about one definite idea for an album at start and then follow it strictly. I presume it even could be the other way round- he gathers up a bunch of songs he's written in some period according with his mood at the time, and then thinks how they could be put together as one whole.

Ha! Great call, jonasf!

However, I think pianocraft has a point. Especially since db was quoted in saying as much in the Brazilian newspaper article that Tati supplied.

In reply to:

Folha- Why is the album called "Heathen"?
David Bowie- A budist is a heathen, for instance. I like this word because itī s thought-provoking, is misunderstood. I like the idea that the people will listen this album and try to understand why is it called "Heathen" and take their own conclusions...
