Everyone says hi and Heathen

Anyone else think the line 'and it's not too hot' in Everyone says hi is partly a joking reference to hell? I also noticed that the beat of 'Heathen' sounds almost like a muffled heartbeat - is it a return to the womb? It seems to fit into the slightly dreamy, isolated atmosphere of the album.

I thought of the "not too hot" line as meaning hell too. I think it is because it follows along the same double meaning of the whole song, the innocence on the top layer and the references to death underneath. I never noticed the Heathen heartbeat, but now that you mention it and I am listening again, I can see that. I don't know about it symbolizing a return to the womb, though. I don't really think that fits.

I had noticed the heartbeat sound most clearly on "I Would Be Your Slave". It exactly recalls the sound of a baby's heart beat... the shwishy muffled sound. Perhaps it is a theme... a thread of humanity that courses throught the isolation and despair.

I never noticed the heartbeat, but now that I think about it, it IS there - I'll listen to it again later tonight. It adds a depth of brilliance to the album - well, more of a depth than was already there, at least.

What a great idea! I never looked at it that way. I had been thinking earlier about how depressing of an album it was but now I sorta see some hope in it. In all the interviews I've read by Bowie about the album he never mentioned it, and said it was more about the relationship of God an man and all the love songs were really attacks at God. Dunno.

I fell like an ignorant here. Thanks for enlighten me. I use to hear the song and don't analyse it. Now I will begin to hear more carefully all the songs I listen.

no i think not it just a kind concern from a dad to a child or a good friend of him or a letter from an older to a younger person perhaps he wish to pour the child/ friend over with sun and love and care that tries to live on his own in a far land and he wishes that everyone in the world loves his child/ friend and the child/friend not feels alone and makes sure the child /friend knows its always loved and welcomed warmly by his family and friends and everyone he left behind that thinks and cares of the child/friend its a very sweet song i find
