You know who I am he said
The speaker was an angel
He couged and shook his crumbled wings
Closed his eyes and moved his lips
It's time we should be going

i chose raphael he is a no nonsense dude who, of the angels, is the healer. in the song the speaker seems to be telling the person to face the injustices of his/her life. to "look back in anger" perhaps to find inner healing. the first step to betterment is accepting the "bads" facing them. yay raphael! (by the way, it pronounced Ray-fi-el, this guy isn't a nija turtle)*
*i attend St Rapheal parish.

I always thought it was the angel of death who came to Bowie in that song. I think the angel of death goes by the name of Michael.
Though Gabriel is the angel of judgement. It's Gabriel who'll come down on Judgement Day, blowing in his trumpet. Btw, I think it's Gabriel Rainer Maria Rilke is talking about in his poem "Every angel is terrible...":
If the dangerous archangel took one step now down toward us from behind the stars our heartbeats rising like thunder would kill us.
So, anyway, it's gotta be either Michael or Gabriel. If the song had a trumpet solo, I'd say Gabriel, but as it is, I lean towards Michael.

eraserhead has got my full support. Michael also was the one who chased Adam and Eve out of paradise. Hence: "... it's time we should be going."
And I want to believe In the madness that calls 'now'

What?! I finally get ErichJohann's support?! Never thought that day would come. It's because I quoted a German poet, right?

none of them, since they are not angels, but archangels.

I always assumed that it was Lucifer, or one of the other third of heaven, since it refers to his crumbled wings (he can't fly and return to heaven).
As a second guess, though, I would say Uriel.

Who said lyrics are not about archangels? What's the difference between angels and archangels anyway? I voted for Raphael, because last night I saw a dream where I was listening a Finnish song "Raphael's angel" again and again. It was weird. (OK, the song is about angels painted by Raphael, but still).

Hey, old friend, I always treasure your posts and opinions . I just sometimes tend to slightly disagree in tiny details . This time: I can't stand Rilke .
